Sat nav and camera detector in one??
Musicman replied to Son of a Beesting's topic in ICE 'n' Secure
AFAIK, it's the active (e.g. laser and radar) detectors that will have trouble with any proposed legislation. Information about the siting of cameras is in the public domain; they're (supposed to be) painted bright yellow and signed in advance therefore hard to miss, so any law suggesting that it would be illegal to provide information to drivers regarding their whereabouts would have a hard time getting past the courts. GPS based systems will probably remain legal for the forseeable future on this basis. Interestingly, the Road Angel ads I've seen lately concentrate on their products being 'safety devices' warning you of potential accident blackspots (which are the places speed, er 'safety', cameras are supposed to be sited anyhow). Nice re-purposing of official government language ;) -

Using Google Maps to solve Autotrader irritation
Musicman replied to Musicman's topic in General Car Chat
Would be very cool. However, I suspect that Autotrader would charge heavily for direct access to their data and/or AutoBuilder APIs from another site, which is what you would need to do that - it's the kind of thing that Yahoo! have done replacing their old Yahoo! Autos marketplace in the US earlier this year. -

Autotrader are nice enough to tell you how far a car you're interested in is from where you live. The problem with it is that not all distances are equal. 40 miles to the other side of London is not as easy as 40 miles straight down the A3. If you're using public transport, you might prefer things to be the other way round. Sometimes you can't easily get hold of the seller and want to know whether it's worth trying to follow it up. Google have an API that allows you to do stuff with Google maps like add overlays. With a little messing about you can get it to draw lines over the top of Gmaps. So... I've put that to use here in a prototype page I built: http://www.cybertects.co.uk/gmaps Do three searches on Autotrader using the post codes provided as your location, enter the distances into the grid and where the circles overlap tells you where the car is located. :) What do you reckon? Useful?

No car insurance, go to jail, do not pass Go

Precisely. That's the current situation and nothing will change in that respect. They're going to come after you for not having a current valid Tax disc anyhow under the current rules (or you've provided a fake insurance certificate to get your tax disc). So why the need to tie this in with the Insurance companies' data and ANPR implementations? How else are people getting round the system as it stands? The whole ANPR issue vs your rights to travel without your movements being monitored by the State is another debate again. -
I've got blue question marks :?

Heard this story on the news this morning http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4295834.stm Uninsured motorists facing fines Uninsured drivers are to face automatic fines of at least £60 in an attempt to reduce rising levels of illegal driving in the UK. New laws being announced by the government will give police access to insurance company records. Currently police have to catch uninsured drivers using their cars in order to prosecute them. But the new powers will make it illegal to own a car without insuring it or declaring that it is not being used. As well as the fines, the new powers will mean uninsured drivers could have their vehicles seized or crushed. BBC transport correspondent Tom Symonds says the estimated one million uninsured drivers in the UK cost law-abiding motorists £30 each in extra insurance premiums each year. Uninsured drivers are also more likely to have accidents and police say they often commit more serious offences. The planned change will mean police can automatically send out fines based on insurance company records. Cameras that can read number plates - such as those used in London's congestion charging zone - will also be used to trap uninsured drivers. In August, figures showed that the number of uninsured drivers on London's roads had risen by 40 per cent between 2001 and 2003, double the average for England and Wales. [ emphasis added ] So, if your car is off the road, uninsured and you haven't filled in a SORN, the DVLA issue a nice little fine and then send the Police round to crush your car (other powers they acquired in July). I'm all in favour of reducing the number of uninsured drivers on public roads, but I wonder what impact this will have on any number of vintage and veteran car and motorbike enthusiasts that might have vehicles stored off road with log books dating back to 1946, to say nothing of the headaches and more red tape it will generate for the second hand motor trade. ... and I'm sure this has to have impacts elsewhere too.

Oops! No-one hurt, I hope? (by the prang, or subsequent justifiable violence? :)) -
Can't be. It doesn't feature a Scirocco Mk 2 rear light cluster.

Likely to be different if it's a 1990/1-spec car ('H' plate suggests that) vs a VR6. From the 'Cosmetic Changes.doc' in CF's Buying Guide (prepares to be shot down in flames by someone who knows what he's talking about :))

Weird thing: the mother of a friend of mine at school had a brand new Alfasud that kept it's "new car" smell for at least three years. I remember being constantly surprised it was still there every time I got into it. :? (even more amazing thing - three years later it hadn't disintegrated into a pile of rust on the floor and been blown away by a light breeze :D)

@ Nick They were much wider Here's the original shot: http://www.cybertects.co.uk/picturepost ... _1501.html IIRC, on that particular one, I also applied an extra compression transformation to just the top half of the image to bring everything above the swage line into better proportion, which reduced the amount of apparent horizontal shrinkage in that area.

Been there, done that ;)

Mostly because - I had to get up early and go take some photos for an album cover I'm doing on for a mate. 8) - I had some real work to do for the rest of the day (working on a proposal with a dumb deadline) - my gf's been feeling a bit neglected with the number of weekend events I've been attending lately :? - I don't own a Corrado  I'll add my admiring comments to the ones above... it was after seeing your C at NR the Wednesday before that I came home and started browsing through the 'For Sale' section, so it's possible that last excuse might be changing in the future :)

FWIW, this is what they look like on a Pearl Green Scirocco I've been thinking of colour coding the centres anyhow...

Mine are 15 x 7.5", ET 27 ;)

Absolutely. Another idea I've not got round to doing was to set up a web site for owners of Pearl Green cars - lc6vw.com :)
