  1. Hi guys just a quick post my car is currently dismantled and whilst in the process of putting it back together have decided its time to sort the steering. When driving using the word.... vague.... is a bit of understatement. A freind drove my car the other day and said that he felt he had to constantly correct himself when driving, something I guess has just got progressively worse and I have compensated for :os. I have had a search and many of you guys have mentioned the fixed steering colomn mod as a way of eliminating play tho looks a little involved. I have had a look and thought track rods are a good bet but enure to replace the whole arms or just the ends??? Any help would be really really appreciatted.

    Wheel archery...?

Hi guys im considering changing my wheels to some 7j items I picked up last year. After some calculation it looks like im going to need 15mm spacers all round. By doing this the offset will be lowered to about 32 with the wheels poking out an extra 12mm. Im thinking 15mm spacers up front with an extra 12mm poke 20mm spacers at rear with an extra 17mm poke. Has anyone run these sort of extensions and any clue if they will clash with the arches??? I have tried to keep my cars oe but fancy a bit of a change. I have been looking at spacers on the web and decided that hubcentric really are the way forward. If anyone has some they want rid of let me know ). Many thanks guys!!
  4. Just as a feeler does anyone happen to have one of these kicking about as some idiot has rubbed the one on my car and it looks a right state.
  5. Hi guys recently posted gearbox trouble with my vr and had to get a new box! After removing the box (on my own ( ) It was evident that my clutch was knackered!!!! It had plenty of life left in the plate tho it looked as if the fibre material was starting to break up.. I think this may have been because the car had been laid up for some time.. My question is do I change the chains now? My car is on 90k and sounds pretty quiet. The more I deliberate about doing it the more uncertain I am. I have had a search on the net and the chains seem easy to obtain but the tensioner blades are not so? Has anyone got an idea of the best supplier price etc and if an upgrade is available? Any help guys would be most appreciatted.
  6. Hi guys just wondering what exactly is needed to swap over an 02A 16v gearbox into the VR? Im sure I have seen a thread on here of someone removing the bell housing but cannot be certain, I am just checking as I am meant to be picking a 2.0ltr 16v box up tommorow! Has anyone fitted a 2.0ltr box into a vr and if so differences in top end etc? Any help would be greatly appreciatted guys. Many thanks in advance!!!!
  7. Hi I know exactly how you feel my qoute went from £700 comp last year up to £1600 this year, I am now with lancaster classic and it cost me £550 fully comp, im only 25 live in south wales and had my car liciense for 4 years. For me the "classic policy" was about 60-70% cheaper than anywhere else. Good Luck!!!!!
  8. Thanks for the replys guys, my only worries are the nature of the trouble in the box itself which I will only find out if I break the old one apart! Has anyone else heard or known of individual bearings breaking up and would that be characteristic of rattling in one particular gear???
  9. Hi guys, posted the other day commenting on my gearbox that has become rattly in second (only 90k on the clock). I have been having a look around at gearbox's and been hit with so much confusion about the "best gearbox to buy" for a vr6. I have been hunting and most seem to be in favour of the shorter ratios of the g60 box. I myself can see where lots of comments come from when they say the vr box is lazy for an na car but I cant fault the cruising speed on the motorway where I do a fair bit of traveling. My question is guys thoughts on either play roulette with a second hand box (which code is best) or the option of rebuilding the vr box (which I would do myself....?). Any thoughts guys would be much appreciatted as this is doing my head in!!!
  10. Hi guys been a little while since I have had a post as uni and work have been crazy. After a 200 mile trip the in the corrado over the weekend when slowing on a slip road I noticed a strange noise suspected from the gearbox... On slowing in second gear this noise (not disimilar to a card in bicycle spokes in pattern but almost as if a bearing is suffering) appeared and immediately I went into full on diagnosis mode lol. I have tried the car in all gears and have given myself paranoia now!! The car drives aok and this sound is noticable in second but not in the other gears, When under load the sound is stronger and also when the clutch is depressed the sound does not go but lessens. It only seems to make this sound on the move making me think its the gearbox. The car has done 90k and is a VR and it has been cherished with the gearbox oil being changed twice in the last 20k. I have racked my mind and because of its presence in second have ruled out inner cv's and clutch. I really dont fancy losing the VR box but if she has to be changed then i will bite the bullit. Does anyone also know if the Golf VR box has the same ratio's or is thier a prefered choice of box from a TDI? Any help guys would be much appreciatted.
  11. Many thanks mate, screwfix first thing on saturday and fingers crossed she will be cured again..... (for 5 minutes :D )
  12. Many thanks guys for the info sounds like a set of these will be invaluble to have in the garage from now on!
  13. Lol i didnt make the most sence, thanks for the offer mate but im down in Surrey this weekend and was trying to get the car ready for the trip today, just weighing up driving on the bearing or getting the train... Yes mate with the bolts grippers I was just trying to picture it working on an (Allen bolt) opposed to a (Standard hex bolt) as the openings look as if they grip a standard hex bolt. I was just wondering if they would work on the allen type head as they are perfectly round with no definition (not much to grip)... I hope that made more sense.... .
  14. New addition fitted today!!!! A Supa RamAir filter that I have to say has transformed the way the car sounds, One of the best mods I have done so far for bang for my buck. Will post some pictures asap. And also WHAT A DIFFERENCE the tt wipers have made on the car!!! We have had some awful weather down in south wales and the wipers have been worth every single penny!!!! Cheers for all the advice guys!
  15. Did you guys use the irwins bolt grippers over the outside edge of the 8mm Allen bolts that hold the carrier in place...? Just getting my head round getting them out. Its been a week now of sub zero temperature and cant hack the moaning noise of the bearing anymore!
  16. Hello mate did the tool work for you...? I am still battling with mine... after an incident today with residual penetrating fluid and my blow lamp led to a bit of a wheel arch spectacle!!!!!!! :gag: Not something I hope to see ever again. Flames licking around the hub next to the fuel tank definately did not cheer my mood. Had my second attempt at removing the carrier bolts and getting totally fuc*ed off with it now. I hate it when something so trivial stops work. Where did you buy your tool from mate to remove the allen bolts??? I think this will be my last ditch attempt before she gets taken to a garage...
  17. Thanks for the comments guys looks like im back on it this morning!!
  18. Hi guys just a trying to get a quick heads up and any ideas of how to remove poor condition rear caliper carrier bolts (m8 allen sockets). I have been meaning to attempt to change my rear wheel bearing when yesterday I hit this problem.... I think with years of corrosion and a couple of removals the bolts have suffered both in thread and head (why do people not use grease!!!!) If you guys have any clues of special allen sockets or such like or best practices to remove them please drop a reply. (I have tried all the usual shocking with impact and penetrating fluid)... :(
  19. Thanks guys I am going to be all over it tommorow, hopefully it should go aok.
  20. Hi guys just dropping a thread regarding changing my rear wheel bearing that now makes a hideous whining noise!! I have bought a Febi Bilstien bearing after reading your views... I am just wondering if it is worth a go ( I have worked on VW engined military Pinzgauers for a couple of years , but now live away at uni) so I dont have any specialist tools :( and dont want o get stuck half way through the task!!!! If any of you guys have any tips or methods to help doing this please drop a post. Many Thanks guys!!!
  21. Well Mike you have voiced my concerns but this is a manual which is now out of production and no longer produced....?
  22. Hello mate that is exactly the same as mine!!!!! If you look right down by the gearbox you will probably see a load of grease has splurged from the unit. I am still waiting for a nice day to get outside to change it. When I went down to GSF they said that the one they supplied under the corrado gearbox mount was a fully rubber one. All the same its worth a go for £17.
  23. If im honest for £17 for the gearbox one it looks ok, its a solid rubber rather than grease filled I believe which is why i opted for it as its hassle free, well worth a look for the price!!!
