maybe all is not lost then! I don't see how the new cat will affect the thirst/idel though, the Lambda is before the cat (according to Vagcat's diagrams) so how is the effect of the cat fed back to the ECU? Thinking about it, my old 16v KR golf would run 36+mgp doing similar journeys, I struggle to get in 30mpg with the 16v 9A C... perhaps it is thirsty and I've never noticed ! mjcp

The C failed its MoT on emissions today (I think I remember: CO is 0.6, needs to be 0.3), the other readings are in acceptable ranges. Its been running rich for a bit so not too surprised (Poor low speed mpg, good on long runs). Vag com suggests (iirc) 587 - mixture out of adjustment. Its also developed a rattle in the past couple of months - I thought it was heat shields. (car is '94 with 92K. lots of history but probably the original cat) Anyway, garage calls to give me the good news, recommends a new cat at £88 + fitting, OK I say.... But now I am wondering.... was I rash, would a duff Lambda show up on the Vag com? Would a duff Cat cause a high CO reading? I suppose I needed the cat anyway as it was sounding a bit pants, but my fear is that I'll end up needing a lambda anyway and I could have saved the cash on the cat for next month. hey ho... any suggestions for the negotiation over rates for the lambda fitting ;-) mjcp

Spotted in Kingsbridge, Devon (on the promenade/road to Torcross) a couple of weeks back, Big point/wave from me in the wife's Megane...

Saw an H plate (black?) on the A835 (Strathpeffer'ish) near the queue of traffic for the Snowman Rally on Saturday morning. I waved but was in a Disco so you probably didn't notice! mjcp

Spotted in at Ikea, Wembley the other day: then spotted another near T4 Heathrow number plate sort of spelt "Craddo". mjcp

Did this happen because the little toad was out of school due to strikes? If so send the bill to your local teacher's union rep... mjcp

Thanks, I have replaced the thermal fuse and then replaced it again with a self resetting fuse too... that keeps getting hot and fusing. Therefore the resistor pack would seem to be getting too hot still. @Rod, how do you know it is OK? (I'm not suggesting its not!, this is part of my question) what readings *should* you get form a working one on a multimeter? For all I know, mine *IS* working and its the fan that's shagged, causing too much load making the resistor too hot...? mjcp

Can someone explain what the heater fan resistor does? Last time I had mine out, I stuck the multimeter on it expecting to find resistance readings that vaguely matched to the figures written faintly on the green wrapper. Instead I got figures that simply varied and there was continuity etc between most pins. Is this a "Ballast Resistor" that varies resistance with current or is mine just knackered? I am assuming that the higher resistance is for the lower fan speeds, hence it gets hotter on lower speeds which is why the thermal fuse dies...? Lastly, this is the same method of running heater blowers as loads of other cars use (see eBay etc for heater blower resistors), can someone with access to a parts store have a rummage for a resistor with similar specs and a decent heat sink that we can use to replace ours with (with a new socket)? mjcp

Dark, (L?) raddo on the M4 east bound the other day, Monday night about 4:30 pm. You were heading onto the slip road to take the M25 as we passed Heathrow. I hooted form the outside lane, not sure if you saw...
-
I was spotted and spotted a white (V tidy in the sun :thumbleft:) J plate G60 on the M4 east bound in convoy with a Mk1. They headed off at Bath, so could have ended up in Salisbury ? I was on the way home from a week in Bude... 230 miles, 42+ MPG by the MFA! (Avg 55 mph by MFA) :smug: mjcp

Dark M reg heading towards Ol dWindsor then off to Datchet yesterday morning. Not sure if you waved, I was pulling out of a side road and only saw you once you were passed. mjcp

Right, pay attention at the back! 3 in one post (do read each one, not just the first... It could be you!) 1> about 10 days ago, Saturday 6th? a BRIGHT Red (VR6?) South bound on the A835 heading towards Inverness 2> a number of times last week, a Blackberry In Plockton. (I suspect you live or were staying there) 3> Sunday just gone, Silver C in the fast lane M6 Northbound around Burnley (at the time, you were sat in traffic as some muppet had just lost part of his roof load) Didn't wave to any of you as I was in a Disco 4... Cheers, mjcp

Won't they be left hand drive though...

An odd auction! "I haven't had this car for very long, I bought the service & tax." ....so they are fake? "Reason for sale: going on holiday and car wont be safe" ...hmmm, looks safe enough on the street currently. "if you beat the car you should buy" ...but if you have beaten it already, maybe I won't ;-) Other than that, it looks like a tidy car from the pics. mjcp

I shall be the fat bloke in purple behind the McLaren ;-)
