1. Should be there around 1030-11 then a couple of hours work... so clear around 1 ish... then meeting a mate toward Cardiff (also a VW nut) after 1530... I'll PM my number.
2. Just run VAG-Com and found these two (first was "in the memory", 2nd appeared after a memory reset) Looking online, both can/will effect mpg by running the car rich... 00537 - Lambda (Oxygen Sensor) Regulation 08-10 - Control Limit Surpassed - Intermittent 00587 - Mixture Control Adjustment Limit 09-00 - Adaptation Limit Surpassed By the way... I'm going to be in Newport (S Wales) tommorow... I can bring the cable! Marc
3. Just saw this: 16VG60 Special Intake Manifold BAR-TEK® E 299 Marc
4. Whats the new one? Is it *new* or a refurb (looks very well refurb'ed if it is)?
5. I'm getting similar mpg to you, (average over 1700 miles is 26 and change) and that is a good mix of trips/distances etc. I had a 1.8 16v golf many years ago with rocket ship milage and it still did 35+ so I am somewhat disappointed with mid 20's! (could have got a VR and not cost any more!). My Oil temp runs between 105 - 115 most days, depending on outside temp, speed and driving style. I had the same discussion with a mate over the weekend and he seemed to think there was no WUR (warm up regulator) on the 2.0l 16v (at least not in the same way the 1.8 has) as the injection is K-Jet"e", not K-Jet... I too have an after market exhaust (Miltek, with cats) and am wondering if its having a detrimental effect. (On the Golf, a blow from the centre section (standard, but cheap Euro Crap Parts pattern) would sap 3+ mpg off the average) I'm being loaned a VAG com cable/laptop and will let you know if anything relevant pops up. Cheers, Marc PS... anyone know if a change in exhaust would require a remap?
6. SL4 2RX (the local post office... but not far away) Marc
7. If you're offended, you have my apologies, it certainly wasn't the intent. My first posts on this were asking some questions, politely... when no one answered, or even offered their thoughts/support, I was bit miffed... and as evidenced by the now 2 pages of responses, things just needed a nudge it would appear. As for the current, I'm well aware of P=IV (with the original, the fan would need a Power of 120W or less @10A) but at the time I didn't have the dash in bits to find the fan's rating and I suspect the original is used as its "off the shelf" rather than needing to be 10A... But as there are many on here with a savant knowledge of the C and other VW matters, I thought I'd ask the question! . If this is a working solution to the age old problem of thermal fuses tripping on older fans, feel free not to use it! Marc
8. Hmmm... So it ran on position 2 for some 20 minuets then cut out... it reset an will run for 30 -60 seconds on 2 then cutout again... BUT... It has just run for 45 minuets+ on position 1 (where lower speed should mean higher resistance = hotter) ??? I'll see how it runs on the trip home on position 3... Marc
9. Partial SUCCESS! I replaced the recently replaced thermal fuse with the 150 Deg C Self resetting fuse from RS this morning. The fan spins up on all 4 speeds, so I'm guessing the current rating is sufficient! About 20 minuets later, I noticed the fan had stopped on position 2 but still worked on 4... I then turned the fan OFF and left it for 20 minutes, after which time it again worked on all 4 speeds!!! Next up... remove fan and grease like a stuck pig! Marc Arrows: Big = New fuse, tucked behind terminals. 2 x small, the connectors from the fuse to the original fuse connection points. (the lower right one has 2 connections, one pinched, one soldered (you will see when you remove yours!)
10. Nope, no air-con... The fan came out easily for the first fuse change, I was able to spin it freely and it felt straight (eg as if the "bearings" weren't worn)... There was rust on it though so defo moister getting/gotten in at some point (Screen clears quickly, no wet foot wells etc). Marc
11. Been there, done that, worked for about 3 weeks.... There is a definite squeak when the fan starts (position 4) when cold, so I suspect the fan is not as free running as it should be. (Hypothesis: on lower fan speeds, there is too much friction to start spinning = gets too hot and burns out the thermal fuse). I bought the one resetting fuse in stock at RS Feltham today... reports to follow ;-) marc
12. So no-one has any thoughts on this... no-one else tried it... no-one want to give guesstimate on the current draw on fan startup...? No-one even going to say Good luck? Oh well.. if I get time I'll pop over to RS and give it a go... and then wont tell anyone if it fixes the age old problem with simple, self resetting solution! Marc
13. I have replaced the thermal fuse once and it has now gone again... My fan spins freely by hand, but I can hear a squeak on occasions when it starts on position 4 (the only one now working). I suspect I left it on Position 2 and it got too hot while trying to start... :bonk: Anyway, I did some digging and located these: http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=getProduct&R=2047483 However... The highest temp they offer is 140Deg C (lower than the 184 Deg C of the original fuse) and they are rated up to 2.5A (although the data sheet says 9.6A max), far lower than the 10A of the original. My question is: What is the current rating required? Does the fan draw more than 2.5A on startup or while running? (the heating fan is on a 20A fuse in the circuit board, though this is not dedicated just to the fan) Assuming the 2.5A is sufficient, in the event of an overheat (140Deg C) cutout, all that would be needed to reset would be turn the power to the fan OFF and then wait/recycle the power once the temp is below 90Deg C... Any thoughts? Marc
14. No road tax is a fine (£60 iirc) and no points. (and I think you need to be caught too... e.g. copper pulls you or the DVLA database does a search for 3+ month gaps etc). Personally, I think you'd be unlucky to get fined for it... Marc
15. Driving into a client's site/work the other day, show pass to copper on the gate who says "you don't see many of these around! .. its lovely." :thumbleft: Marc
16. BING... "But Its Not Google" I hope they got a refund from the naming consultants! Marc
17. Yeah, but what about the ner'do wells they are chasing! My cousin was round yesterday, A mate at work was pulled in his BM by a pair who'd been on TV in a similar show near slough... 96 in a 40 apparently :bonk: past an unmarked 530... All set for an instant bad due to the seed/speed limit ratio, then asked how this would affect him, to which he responded: Ruin life, lose job etc, Asked where he worked, he said the Home Office :thumbleft: (Via an IT contract, but still the Home Office!)... ban became 4 points and a lesson learnt! Result! Marc
18. Went to Rugby and back to see a client, 100 miles each way, 35.4mpg there, 33.6mpg back... Picked up a set of Estorils with 4 good tyres on the way home too! Marc
19. Think I have cracked it: Settings--> My Account (Left hand side) --> General Settings Near the bottom --> Miscellaneous Options --> Msg editor options. there are 3 settings, mine was set to Basic, I have changed it to Enhanced and I now see the full WYSIWYG editor on new threads. Cheers, Marc
20. Similar thing happened to me in way back in my Talbot Horizon (now that was "£$£$% heap of a car!) Marc
21. What tyres on Blackcircles (Sub £60ea) Std. 16v? Blackcricles.co.uk currently have (fitted) 195/50/15: Yokos at @ £55 Toyo Proxes TR-1 @ £54 Yoko c.Drive 2@ £58 Avon ZV3 @ 56 and various others (Falken, Firestone, Bridgstone and unbranded/minor makes) between £45 and £60... Last few pages suggest Tr-1s, any thoughts on the Yokos at that price? Someone mentioned Toyos at £30 in December... where from? Recommendations for spirited daily driver? Cheers, Marc
22. It was Saturday lunch time, you were showing off with the Sunroof open..OPEN, not tilted ;-) Marc
23. Hmm... It looks like I get the icons in the Quick Reply view but not in Go Advanced... this is in both IE 8 and FF 3.6.13. I have screen grabs if needed. Marc
24. Thanks... BTW, when I create a new post, I cannot see the icons for URL embedding, B I U etc. When I then try to reply to a post, I can see the icons... (Even if I "Go Advanced" Any ideas? Marc
