fitting a non adjustable steering column (how-to)
Stonejag replied to davidwort's topic in Drivetrain
Just finished fitting mine, all bar the covers at any rate (that can wait until it's not dark and peeing down with rain!). Got one shear bolt out with an easy-out, but it then sacrificed itself in the second bolt and I had to grind it out :( If you don't mind killing a couple of the weird domed washers VW use on the bolts that nobody seems to be able to identify, grinding them seems to be the easiest way out - it just leaves a stub of thread which you can unscrew by hand once the other bolts are out. I recommend loosening the back two bolts before you start on the shear bolts as it'll relieve a bit of the pressure that keeps them tight. I'm amazed any of you are putting spline bolts back in, do you not remember the hassle of taking them out?! Only driven it very briefly so far but it seems much more sturdy than the old one! There's still a little up/down movement if you yank on it but it feels more like something flexing rather than just the slack in the adjustment I used to get. One question: how far is the spline supposed to engage into the UJ? I got mine in until it bottomed out and I could insert the bolt all the way through with no problems, but there's still a half-inch of spline sticking out of the UJ - looking at the old column I removed, from the dirt marks it seemed the same... Also my spring doesn't appear to do anything since it's just able to freely slide up and down the base of the column, should it be compressed? It's the same length as the old one so maybe it's just the wrong one and too short? Stone -
If only it wasn't wrapped...want to get one coated. Good luck with the sale though :thumbleft:

REDUCED in Cornwall - Bumpers, Boot lid, Lights. Spoilers, Coil Pack
Stonejag replied to R1chy99's topic in Parts for Sale
I'll have the coilpack. PM me postage cost? Cheers, Stone -
I loved my Lupo (and my Arosa before that). Luckily my gf is looking for one as her first car so I might get to play again :D The 1.4 engines were both pretty punchy things, especially the 16v. Loved the low gear ratios too, struggled to get above 100 but around town it was a torque monster... Stone

For the record, I got both of these from the VW dealership a couple of weeks back, so definitely both still available. Not sure why Heritage stocks one though...!

I was also told it was obsolete, so I got a bag of seals online. If anyone wants a free one let me know, I had to buy ten of them and I only have one Corrado! Stone

Radiator flange: 535 121 647 You also need a small bolt: N 010 222 8 and a long bolt: N 010 366 4 and a pair of spring washers: N 012 226 5 and a round o-ring to seal the elbow: 535 121 687 I bought all these from the dealership recently - the long bolts are available individually but the short bolts are only available in packs of five, the spring washers are only available in packs of ten, and the o-ring is now obsolete and no-longer available. (it's in ETKA as 'round seal 31x3.2' so there may be something suitable used in another car but the dealership didn't know how to search for it...) I bought a suitable o-ring (31.5mm inner diameter x 3mm cross-section - perfect fit) from eBay but they came in a pack of ten as well! If you'd like a correct short bolt, two correct spring washers and an o-ring then you're most welcome to them for nowt, PM me your address and you'll just have the long bolt and the elbow to buy :-) Same applies to anyone else who may need the same parts, as long as I have extras you're all welcome to them. PM me and I'll post when I run out! Best, Stone

If your garage is incompetent they might have put copper anti-seize on the threads - one I used did this and combined it with not tightening the bolts fully with the result that one wheel dropped off... Stone

Is the car leaning back when you overtake and raising the beam pattern? You won't have the self-levelling ability you find in modern headlights if you've just swapped the bulbs over. Rip it out and put something legal in, second vote for better bulbs (I went Philips) as they improve things massively. Stone

I've got a pair with broken tabs and no glass on the passenger side. Reflectors are both fine though so you could easily swap them into yours. £50 posted for both. Stone

Hi all, One of my parcel shelf straps has inexplicably snapped (looks like it got nicked by something sharp - no idea what though!) so I need another one. I'll take a pair if I have to. Let me know what you have. Cheers, Nick

Yep, take the door card off and you'll probably find the C-clip rattling around in the bottom of the door, along with the C-shaped metal part that fits on the back of the barrel and pushes up and down on the locking lever. Once you've reattached it to the cylinder, push the c-clip back on and you should be fine - if you rotate it so the open part is towards the front of the car then it won't be able to fall completely off if it gets loose. When you remove the door handle make sure you keep the two white plastic clips in the right place (in the slot in the door) before trying to reattach it, otherwise it won't fit properly and you'll be very confused! Yesterday (Wednesday) I saw a red early-model Corrado with colour-coded OEM grille, at. around 17:47 heading westbound on the M4 at junction 4a. I was stuck in the traffic going the other way and you were in the fast lane so don't think you saw me wave... Stone

That was mine  New OEM fans cost me £360, they are still available from somewhere but the guys from the garage did say they had a job to get hold of them... If I'd known in advance I would probably go aftermarket and ditch the fan controller, less to go wrong. Needless to say even with brand new fans they still don't switch on and off properly! :bonk: Stone

That's just round the corner from me, might nip and have a look :D

I have a set of JOM coilies off eBay. Far better comfort and ride height than the >90mm drop on fixed springs the previous owner had, the only issue being that they're made for much lighter cars and so make the odd 'sproing' noise when you corner enthusiastically. If you just want to drop it a bit they'll work fine, at least for you to make do until you get around to getting some nicer ones on there (after fixing the standard-issue gremlins...). Second-hand is even cheaper! Stone

Just in case anybody needed cheering up, here's a copy of today's alignment report. Not quite sure how it got like that but it would explain why I was wearing through the front sidewalls... Unsurprisingly it drives much better now  Stone

The far end goes to the carbon canister valve. If you haven't got a carbon canister you can just block it up.

Just bend the arm slightly over your knee, job done ;) Or you can replace the springs or grind some metal off the endstop to give them more movement, all achieve the same thing. Lupo / TT wiped arms are your best bet though, OEM performance is borderline dangerous. Stone

I like the noise, quite bassy without the annoying raspy swarm-of-bees effect of all the modern performance systems. I have a decat and CDA though so 'quiet' isn't really the word I'd use

First check if it spins freely - if it grinds round then the bearing will have died. Easiest way to test them is to unplug the plug from the radiator sender - bridging the red wire to the other two pins should give you speeds 1 and 2. If it doesn't then either your fan controller's dead or the fan is, and you can tell the two apart by directly applying 12V as Kip says. Beware, if the fans seize completely, or the speed reduction resistors die, the motor may catch fire like mine did! OEM fans are £360 so probably better with the slim aftermarket ones you can get now. This is for a vr6 by the way...not sure how much is common to other engines. Stone

When I complained about the adjustment to the garage that fitted it (it kept slipping, D moved to where 3 should be, locking the shifter in N made it reverse!) they overtightened the nut that holds the cable outer and putting it in Park snapped it :( Either that or I Hulked out on it! It's not exactly hard to get right (gearbox in P, shifter in P, tighten bolt to 20Nm) so not sure how they managed to screw it up, especially when I loaned them my Bentley! At least I had a spare attached to my old shifter, I dread to think what they cost new... Stone

I've got one of these on the VR - hugely underrated in my opinion - lovely noise and the exhaust pipe sits just right. Good luck with the sale :thumbleft: Stone

Out of interest how much would you do Proxes T1Rs in 195/45/16 for? Just ordered a couple at £70ea fitted (with tracking and alignment done) but nice to keep it in the family where possible :) I've found the T1Rs to be excellent compared to the boat-anchors that were on there before (215/40/17s! Urgh) and mine's a daily. Only got three months out of the last one due to tracking problems though :( Stone

I found this page very useful: link Basically you drain and refill, drive for 5-10 miles, then drain again, change the filter and refill. Made a huge difference to mine. If you don't end up with Hasan's torque converter I might nab it as a spare...then again his old shifter cable snapped on me on Friday! ;) Stone
