If it's only a small leak then a bottle of K-Seal will sort it. Doesn't clog your heater matrix up but it's very effective - stopped a fairly large leak I had dead in its tracks :D It helps if you know where it's coming from so you're confident it's nothing too serious, but I went hundreds of miles before fixing the part that was leaking on mine and it held fine. Just whatever you do, for pity's sake don't spill it on the threads for your expansion tank cap or you won't be able to get the bugger off afterwards  Stone

fitting a non adjustable steering column (how-to)
Stonejag replied to davidwort's topic in Drivetrain
No worries, just thought I might be able to get a head start before dismantling mine so it's a bit more of a bolt-off-bolt-on job. I guess you can get them from VW at silly prices though..? Managed to get the rest of the column out of the scrapyard car today, so I now have the inner column with ignition switch and top bearing, the black outer tube with its bottom bearing, the lock barrel and the big spring from the base of the inner column, along with the right kind of trim for my stalks. Other than the immobiliser ring, is there anything I've missed? Since I got it out of a Corrado I'm hoping most of the awkward bits are already sorted, took a bit of swearing and filing (someone tried to take it out before me...with a hammer) but it seems to have gone back together OK :) Cheers Stone -
Thank you, I was thinking about changing it in the respray but so many people have said nice things I'm just going to get it done in blackberry again :) Nice Golf!

Throttle body is 'Drosselklappenteil'. I don't know that much automotive German, I just have the vacuum hose routing sticker sat on my desk which is bilingual :D I'm pretty sure all VR6s have the throttle body pot though - it's used along with the MAF and lambda sensor to determine fuelling, which is why the throttle position is in the engine measurement block on VAG-COM and not in the auto ECU one... Fair enough - my second gear sounded a bit dodgy earlier after my (failed) first launch start so I'd better add parts cover to my AA membership quick  That said the scrapyard I found the Corrado in (see the cars for breaking section) has an auto Mk3 VR6 so I think I'll nab that one if they don't want silly money. Worst case it can sit in the garage as a spare, best case it's good enough to swap over... Stone

Yes, if you get the right parts! I have the Lupo ones which are great - for them you need two driver's side wiper arms and a Bosch 928S (kit of two blades), the Lupo passenger wiper bade goes on the Corrado driver's side, and vice versa. Great upgrade, I love mine :) My favourite mod so far has been the Roose hose kit - so much more peace of mind compared to the (obsolete) OEM rubber ones. Lifetime warranty and they look great :thumbleft: Stone

The airbox has gone but I'll be going back tomorrow to have another crack at the quarter windows so I'll have a look. There are 3-4 Mk1s and Mk2s in the same yard so I'll have a spy at them if I get a chance. Some knob peeked at the engine for ten seconds while we were working on it and then slammed the bonnet - it wasn't mint anyway but the release cable had gone so we had to crowbar it back open and dented the wings and slam panel :( What remains of the body is very poor now so I'll be having repair panels out of the arches tomorrow after getting the windows out. The sunroof and roof strips turned out to be damaged beyond repair, but the rear bumper and two outer rear lights are still in good condition, as are the door mirrors and clocks. If nobody wants them I'll leave them there though. Stone

Reg is/was after today's escapades -> F309 AAB Really looking sorry for itself after the scrap yard proceeded to move it and then loose it and then move it again for us twice with a fork life through the windscreen. Tears were shed...well....almost laughter at the JCB's drivers disregard for health and safety. Stu

fitting a non adjustable steering column (how-to)
Stonejag replied to davidwort's topic in Drivetrain
You're quite right, no hassle at all, unlike the door handles! :) How does the steering lock fit in? I was expecting my column to rotate relative to the ignition switch but it seems jammed - could just be that the lock needs releasing but annoying since I only have one ignition barrel with a key and it's in the car! Could be missing some bits, I suppose...can the ignition barrel be retumbled? Stone -
I've got two of the three if that's any good to you (nearside and centre). The offside one bent in half as I was freeing it from the glue :( Stone
-
Outside or inside? If it's the inner one I'm pretty sure Stu has one...

I've got a spare dipstick, £8 posted.

Still got the slam panel? If it's straight I'll happily come and get it... Stone

Sounds like a challenge to me :D The box is supposedly rated to 270hp before mods... I think the main issue would be whether it could handle the overrun when changing gears, could be speeded up with a ported valve body though. Cooling isn't a worry now it's all done on an external radiator, and the gearbox ECU doesn't throw a fault code until 185 degrees anyway..! Has anybody actually tried it rather than 'knowing' it's a bad idea? Autos can't be that bad or I wouldn't have beaten all my opponents off the line at Santa Pod, even if they did then thrash me  Stone

Oh, shush. If nobody claims the rear quarter panels I'll be cutting repair strips out of the rear arches, so do let me know if you want them as I'd prefer them to go whole. The side mirrors appear to be in good condition too - nobody need a spare? Stone

I've been thinking about doing one of either for a while so this thread has been really useful :) Am I right in assuming a turbo would be pretty much useless on an auto since you can't control revs independent of engine speed? Mechanically a supercharger makes more sense to me as I generally have to drive with higher revs than you lot due to having one (or two) fewer gears, so the limitation of only producing significant boost at high revs wouldn't be such a problem. Under hard acceleration my box shifts at the redline, so I get 1st->2nd at 15mph, 2nd to 3rd at 80mph (!) and 3rd to 4th at 115ish - with a supercharger I'd have max boost all the way up and I'm guessing overtakes would be much more fun  Stone

I did get a wave and thumbs-up from a bloke in a dark Golf the other day (four headlights, red GTi stripe?) so that may have been you, actually! I was parked in that bit for Santa Pod so well spotted :) Stone

For a late model, this is an early one...trust me, all the bits I needed that could come off this one have already gone ;) Sure, shouldn't be too pricey either. Since I misread the Wiki page! I thought they were first released in 1989 but obviously 1988 was correct :) PM sent. Stone

I don't have a bonnet bra, so no :) Could have been me on the bypass though. I've seen dark blue, green and another blackberry within 5 miles of Flitwick so there are a few :)

Have you all got the wind deflector fitted to the driver's blade? They only clip on so a lot get thrown away when the blades are changed... Doesn't make a lot of difference but every little helps, I have a spare if anyone needs it!

I'll be there anyway, there's always coffee to warm us up  Actually after the last couple of weeks I think I'm immune to drizzle now... -
fitting a non adjustable steering column (how-to)
Stonejag replied to davidwort's topic in Drivetrain
Quick one - does the key need rotating to get the lock barrel out? I have a fixed column with the release hole pre-drilled but no keys to the car it came off. Would prefer not to waste too much time on picking the lock but if I have to... Stone -
What colour is it? Some were only available on later cars...
