  1. DEL VR6, the centre console isn't too bad to remove, just abit of time. From memory it involves the following:

    2. Remove centre heater vents and there are screws fixing the centre console to the dash.

Now barring any screws I've forgotten about the centre dash should just slide out leaving access to the heater controls and cables. I also took the drivers side dash trim out aswell to get better access.

Most of the screws you have mentioned i have undone before / know about where they are.

The heater vents sounds a bit confusing. Not being in the car right now probably doesnt help, and it will probably be obvious once im in there i guess. Do the vents pull out?

  2. for anyone who doesn't donate/subscribe, you are lucky that some people have chosen to give a donation, as there is no way in hell this forum would be here for you in the shape it is without that funding!

I spent ages typing out a way too long long email and editting it way too many times, and in the end didnt bother. As it happens thats exactly the point i wanted to make. Well said Therapor

    So basically.... Ditto

  3. just a tip for anyone that needs these, and aint desperate or even wants to keep a spare or two. (definitely advise this if you are playing around or modifying anything in that area, cos they can blow so easily....)

Cheap as chips. i just ordered 10, cos i know i will blow half of them in the fitting / adjusting of the work i am doing. they work out at 59p each andP&P is free!

  4. Thanks everyone that replied.

It is indeed available from Halfords. I didnt have the old bulb, but the guy was quite friendly & helpful (for a change).

So anyone that wants to know for future reference, its called a 286 bulb, and it cost me £1.79p.

  5. how do i get the heater panel illumination brighter ???

I dont think you can unless you do an EL wire job, which is what i am in the process of doing. The stuff i have got is fantastic, and really works. I just need to sort the heater controls out first, as 1 of the left hand side one (the one that controls where the air flows) is knackered, and the centre one isnt too great either.

Will try and take pics of the EL wire job along the way, although there is already a great write up on it in Wiki

  6. I'd take the centre console out just so you have more room to take the metal clips off with the least amount of force.

How much of a job is this? I've taken the speedo' clock etc out before.

How much more removing / unscrewing is involved?

  7. I got this picture from the Wiki section.

    HeaterControlPanel.jpg

Can anyone who has experience of this part / area of the car tell me if i can remove it from the centre console easily?

I undone the 4 screws at each corner (very tight), but the whole thing pushes backwards, rather than pulling forwards. I didnt want to push it back and then find im screwed. The whole thing looks delicate and there aint much room to get your hands in and out.

anyone know what to do? / Got any good tips?

    Cheers in advance.

  8. My dealers dont seem to know what i am talking about when i asked for a bulb to fit this.

Its the insert that goes behind the central control on the heater control panel.

Does anyone know how i can go about getting it replaced? (vw part number etc? halfrauds??)

Sorry the pics are crap. Im sure anyone that has had this item out knows exactly what im on about.

    Cheers. Del.

  9. I fitted a loom supplied by H100VW, and its coming upto about 4 years. I have never had a single problem with it, and it has worked fine, and i cant say enough good things about the loom, and the supplier.

Only thing i have never liked about it is the ends are push in blade connectors. It makes the whole thing looks and feel a little delicate, and if the car is being worked on by someone else, they could easliy accidentally knock something out of position.

For that reason, i would be interested in replacing it with something with proper OE type connectors to connect to the back of the headlights. Will try and post a pic up if i can of the current set up.

  10. My nearest VW stealers (Reg Vardy, what a bunch of to$$ers) are the same.

The idiots in the parts dept walk around as though customers are invisible. They just dont give a damn.

I have to drive to another dealer now which is alot further away, but they are one of the last few remaining "old school" vw dealers, which i believe is still owned by the same family as opposed to being part of a group like Reg Vardy etc, so the staff there are old school and actually want you to get the part you need.
