    6 speed

A mate at work suggested replacing my valver 'box with a 6 speed TDI(or other) unit. He reckons it's good do-able swap (though not done it himself), and he's got/had 'a few' Golfs so probably has more of an idea than me. My 5th gear seems to prefer not being used. It goes in OK, but will then grate horribly as if something is jamming in the teeth. It isn't always immediate, so I've had a few scary moments when I've absent-mindedly selected 5th but thought I was in 4th and then thought the whole gearbox was gonna explode. It's just 5th, but I had the 'box rebuilt about 4-5 years ago when I lost 5th completely and I wonder if it's jinxed. Also a really long top would aid fuel economy, especially compared to now. I may miss the improved exceleration of motorway speeds in 4th but the weber firebreather throttle body should help  I was gonna wait until I'd sorted the 'box to fit the weber but I couldn't resist, it's On  heh heh heh. Any comments welcome.
  2. Cheers that gives me a better idea of costs, I'm in 2 minds, I'd like the whole lot done but the rears aren't too bad, door cards could do with some attention, though I'd like the later style anyhow. Have to wait and see I guess, thanks once again.
  3. Are you getting the whole lot done? ie doorcards etc? What's the wallet damage like for leather and alcantara, I'd like similiar myself!
  4. If you go onto the offical roadangel web site http://www.blackspot.com/ they say that the Bill may be reinstated in late 2007 but it shouldn't affect their product :D Winner!! I've just got my life membership for my Classic roadangel  Ohhhh Yes!
  5. Got an old mongoose stainless cat-back system fitted around 6years and 60k miles ago by Elite in rainham. £350 fitted. Great fit, no knocking, scrapes the odd hump, meaty sound, idle is a bit boomy i.e. the resonate frequency of the entire world  no blowing or anything adverse. Only available tail pipes back then were oval (Boring!) or the old DTM twin 3"(my choice obviously!). Biggest disadvantage of them is the amount of sh1te they blow onto the bumper :( . If I replace the rear box I'll go for twin slash cut pipes which should cut this down a bit! :D
  6. if you're still after cloth check out http://www.autoacoustics.co.uk/speakergrillecloth.htm i used their cloth to recover my home speakers, which looked ace til the kitten climbed up them!! loads of colours available, enjoy! Personally i home built an enclosure to fit behind the left wheel arch, but then it was only a dinky 8" to back up my 6x9s on the stealth shelf, works though!!
  7. When i lowered my suspension( Vipertech from Venom) i did the powerflex thing with the wishbones and sub frame at the front and that tightened up the steering considerably. I suspect the wishbone bushes had most effect on this!
  8. got the same prob, tried adjusting, but it is 14 years old, might have to replace some shite. tricky at the mo as i'm in Iraq! :)
  9. Try your caring, sharing stealers, i've changed mine in the past but i can't remember the damage to the wallet! or get one from a scrapyard. the fun is in setting the jet up, it rotates with the wiper arm so can squirt everywhere!!
  10. i've got zimmerman drilled discs with pagid FR pads all around(from GSF too). They work fine, are more affective and have more feel than the standard stuff they replaced. maybe it's just the pads that are better but i've got no complaints :D
  11. thanks to all that have replied to this. :) it's something i really would like to consider, although financing it may not be too easy at the mo. There is a faint possibility of some form of redundancy at work which may free up some time and money :D , so fingers crossed  Thanks again.
  12. unfortunately missed the chance to get a complete, if slightly damaged,(front wishbone, damper possible chassis twist) car, when an aquaintance sold his to a breakers for £200   he has since been told what a total prick he was, especially with the undamaged 3 month old 17s on it. he must have lost loads on that deal
  13. if i wanted to go the 16v g60 route, would i be able to s/charge a straight 16v, or would i be better off getting a g60 and swapping heads? what costs, pitfalls or potential nightmares are out there!!!!!! OR would i be better off turbo-ing what i've got instead, ie 16v :? disguss!!!! :)
  14. i've got a 1990 16v and i didn't have this on the original leads or the new set i got from VAG, what the hell's it s'posed to do then, what's not happening on my Corrado  !!!!???????
  15. as i recall you should just be able to move the washer with some screwdriver pressure.

    Oil Temp

Mr Clutch? No, local garage. Although i did have Mr Clutch shag a speedo cable on an old r19. They 'found it was damaged ' . I use neither any more. I use youngs garage, gasoline alley, wrotham, kent now, nick's a nice bloke. :)

    Oil Temp

I';ve got a 1.8, and the only time i got 134 on the oil temp was when the tossers that changed my clutch put my fan plug on back-to-front so that the reversed airflow was restricting cooling at the radiator, with accompanying coolant boiling of course! the give away was hot air blowing out of the grill when i'd stopped  !!!! C#NTS
  18. i've got a 1.8 and normally get 34ish mpg :) . the worst was driving oxford-maidstone ( 90 miles) and taking 3 3/4 hours in traffic on the M25, 22mpg :( , and the best was with a poxy spacesaver on  , on the same trip, desparately trying to stick to the 50mph limit, 48mpg  , all figs indicated on MFA so open to conjector!! I have since done the trip in 4 3/4 hours but i've got the classic 99.99mpg at the mo! must look behind the cluster, i'm sure messing with stereo wires has disloged something!
  19. oops didn't check page two before replying-again
  20. i had a garage fit the fan plug wrong way round, when she started to work hard the fan counteracted the airflow through the radiator at speed. give away is hot air out the grill when you stop. probably not your prob but a possibility?simple fix anyhow. good luck
  21. mine's missing, got a good number for it anyone?

  23. i've had my '90 16v 5 years and the passenger sides never been one touch either way using the passenger switch, though the driver's side switch arrangement works as advertised! Is that right???? thought the passenger switch would be one touch too
  24. my 16v had done 120-odd K and the steering was begining to feel 'a shade shabby' changing lanes on the motorway, so i changed the sub frame mounts ( f**k knows how that actually helps, apparently it does, i had the cash, and thought what the f**k) ) and all the front suspension bushes( all powerflex ), at the same time as fitting a vipertech lowering kit (35mm) from Venom  . i didn't do the anti- roll bar, but it still tightened the steering up a treat, it didn't feel 'odd' at all. it does generally feel a little firm (wife moans-in a bad way!!!!! ) but i don't know how much of that is the lowering kit and how much is the bushes!! apparently if you do the rear axle mounts you're better off using oem bushes because you retain the 'passive rear steering' or something! ( i found out after i'd powerflexed them a bit later!!!!!!) hope this helps. i'd fit what you'd planned to, you can always add to it later if it's not quite to your liking, otherwise you may end up spending on stuff you don't need  i've now done 146k and it still feels fine.
