W3RKD 0 Posted April 9, 2005 I know this has been brought up in the past but this happened to a customer of mine today whist on idle outside the workshop... luckly i fixed it for him woth no problems but it could of quite easilly become a very expensive bolt had he been doing 80 on the motorway when it decided to break... Please replace your crank bolts with one from a dx engine any problems i will supply and fit for cost just so this dosent happen outside our workshop again.. Yes this is the main crank pulley bolt which holds the crank pulley onto the crank and in which the cam belt runs around hence not a good thing to break on you. CaiosG60 PWR 0 Posted April 9, 2005 Nice one Darren! I had this happen to me too, the day after I bought my car. Luckily there was no damage done. But it’s a real worry while you wait to find out if there’s any damage. Its also just happen to my mates G60 two days ago. He posted the story on the Dubforce forum. We haven’t got the broken part of the bolt out of the crank yet. We won’t know if any damage has been done until we get the broken bolt out (nightmare) and try turning the engine. At the moment it looks promising as he was going slow when it happened and the bottom pulley is still on the car but has popped out a bit. Think the water pump pulley has hopefully saved him as its jammed up against that. It may have slipped a couple of teeth on the timing belt but hopefully that’s it. His car has a Jabbasport big valve head on it too!! He’s gutted but optimistic, could be very expensive though!! What makes it worse is he had Awesome replace it about a month ago to prevent it from happening!! Any ideas why its happened? Think maybe Awesome didn’t torque the new bolt correctly? potatonet 0 Posted April 9, 2005 yeah this didnt happen to me cause I replaced mine, didnt use nutlock, snapped the woodruff key on the pulley cause of 2 much power? and then just paid tillmans german car specialists 1000 US to find the problem and fix it. felt great about that one. h100vw 0 Posted April 10, 2005 The bolt had gone on my syncro. The car left me at the side of the M6 after appearing to run ok for 25miles after picking it up. I changed the bolt as a matter of course but the car failed to start. I had checked the timing marks but it still wouldn't have it. I then checked to make sure number one piston was at the top. It wasn't........ The bottom pulley had no woodruff key in it. The crank slot was a little bit worn but not where it mattered. A nice secondhand pulley from Awesome and it started first turn of the key. Now using a DX bolt obviously. FIT AND FORGET. Gavin Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Banana Man 0 Posted April 10, 2005 When mine snapped it took 2 of the exhaust valves with it. Luckily I managed to get 2 new valves for £12 each and got the valve seat re cut so they didn't leak and job was a goodun. For the sake of a £2 bolt just change it to be on the safe side and forgwet about it. I was a little pissed off when mine broke coz 2 days before I had heard about henny's biting the dust, so I went and got one but hadn't had time to fit it, which was the next thing on my list of things to do!!! :mad: Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Its the crank bolt dude - you only need to remove the small cover under the wheel arch... You need car in gear and someone hard on the brakes, and a torque wrench upto 200Nm I think...
