Erm, a clay bar is umm... a bar of soft clay ;)

You get some cleaning spray and the bar of clay. You then spray the paint and scrub it with the clay, which removes all of that ingrained filth from the paint (the bar starts off white and ends up brown/black).

After you're done the paint feels like glass again 8)

When I sold my Corsa a year or so back, it hadn't been cleaned for about a year and felt like sandpaper. I spent an hour or so going over it with a clay bar and the paint felt like new :D

Well you're supposed to clean the car first, then give it some clay action. Otherwise you end up scratching the paint and/or filling the clay up with unnecessary crud.

Clay bar - It ain't clay! It's a cross between blu tak and plasticine.

Blu Tak - Yes I've used it on my car. The idea of clay bar'ing is to dig out crud from the surface imperfections. Most clear laquered surfaces don't have much crud to offer the bar anyway, unless the car is severely neglected.

Fairy liquid - It doesn't attack paint as such, but it can strip all previous waxes off.

Bar'ing - It's best done with water and a very small amount of body wash to act as a lubricant...

never used anything but zymol shampoo or zip wax shampoo stuff on mine... fairly liquid was only used on cousins car and used as a lubricant for the clay bar mission, not to wash the car as a whole

Fairy liquid is OK as a 'deep clean' to get all the old crud off..... but Swissol do a superb cleaner for that. You know how your hair squeaks when it's clean in the shower? That's what the cleaner does.... takes the paint right back to bare, erm, paint again and it squeaks when you rub your fingers on it!

I thought that fairy liquid was bad as it contains salt which can scratch paint.... I'm sure I read that on uk-polos somewhere.... I only ever use fairy on my work van as that aint gonna get expensive shampoo used on it!!
