1.8T engine in a VR6

Recommended Posts

I think Jay did that through choice, partly because the wiring loom grommets that pass through the bulkhead are a lot larger on the MK4 loom, or so I read at least. I'm sure there were other reasons too which I'm sure he can fill us in on.

I had that problem with my OBD2 Golf loom too but we got round it a different way.

The firewall isnt being fitted to my car mate, although the new pedal and drive by wire box will need to be welded in.

I'll be getting more info as to how the whole job is done in due course.

its more about the character of the car/engine rather than the power output. putting a 4-pot with a blower into a VR would be, to some people, sacralidge.

If the 24V is 204hp and the R32 is about 236 - 250 odd hp why have people been saying in this thread that they are so much better than the 1.8T which can be 225hp ?

That is a question asked by a man who has clearly not experienced the 2 engines.

There is no comparison to be made, the 24v motor oozes class, the 20v is just dull I am afraid.

Some 1.8Ts are far from dull 8). If you try the likes of John's at Stealth Racing, you will be grinning from ear to ear when you feel 350+ worth of pull.....and he's doing another one in a fully stripped and lightened Rado (his front doors weigh next to nothing :-) ) but this time more like 450ish horse. Wish I worked there :-)

The run of the mill 150/180/225s are indeed a bit hum drum on a daily basis. Just depends if you're happy with just loads of go, or want a nice sound track to go with it.

I've been searching the forum and came across this topic which tbh, still doesnt answer the questions i have, hopefully somebody may have attempted a 1.8t into a VR by now and can advise the pitfalls, and equally anyone in the middle of their R32 transplant, what do i need to look out for?...

I spoke to the place today that services my C they specialise in 1.8T's and are incoraging me to put one in cos i feel my engine is getting a bit tired now... the thing is they are saying your looking at around £1000 -£1500 (unfitted) for a BAM engine and box although i think i'd need the cupra R's version as (please can someone confirm as i dont know) i think thats fwd and 6 speed?? they reckon with emerald management your looking at 270-280bhp on this set up which i've heard is very similar to the figures stealth or storm can get with their emerald loom for the R32 into a corrado...

Problem i have is they seem to be very similar in costs for the engine and gearbox's and i cant imagine the 2 emeralds are going to differ to much. I dont want to loose the 6 cylinder howl really but will the R32 pick up on the VR6 mounts cos if you need new ones it seems the 1.8t might be a better route to achieve somewhere close to the 3-400 ponies i'm after.

Can you use the original box (rebuilt) or is there a 6 speed one out there.... when i do this (winter i hope) i only want to do it once so 6 speed and LSD are what i was hoping for.

Im sure if you want 6 speed from an o2m then its custom gearbox mount and moved and custom driveshafts Yeti as its a huge thing, all regardless of whether its a 20v or 24v.

So i would go the other expensive route and go something like the Quaiffe or SQSracing stuff

sure im not expert on vr6s yet far from it but as a outside point of view my last car was a astra gsi fitted with a c20let and eds phase 3 chips saab red injectors etc etc giving about 260bhp and sold it on to get a vr6 pretty much standard at the moment apart from a superchips in it but i would never swop back the vr6 engine sound sweet compared to a 4 potter so thats my 2p worth now everyone slate me

Yeti, the subframes are different for 4 and 6 cylinder cars, so the 24v and r32 engine drop into VRs easily and the 1.8ts drop in to 16v and G60s easier. To put a 1.8t in your VR, you would (as i understand it) need a set of 4 cylinder subframes, plus all the other crap that goes with them.

Somebody has good taste. Dont think i will hear a better sounding engine.

As for this topic Ive been driving a remapped Cupra R and then a remapped S3 for the last 6 months and there very addictive with the ease at which the produce the power. When i bought my VR recently it felt flat until 4k, almost like there is something wrong. Wouldnt want one in my Corrado though as they have no character. Very effcicient but its just to easy.

Need to decide if it's 300 or 400hp you want mate because the difference is huge, financially and mechanically.

300hp is just about doable with a BAM and it's standard K04, but you'll be running that K04 very hard. It won't last long and the stock exhaust maniold is a major restriction.

300+ you need a bigger turbo, bigger injectors, bigger flowing exhaust manifold etc etc.

400+ you need an even bigger turbo, even bigger injectors, bigger exhaust, rods, valves etc etc.

If 400hp (or more) is your goal I'd go VR6 T.

cheers kev, i want close to 400 when i spoke with the TT shop last week they seemed confident that a BAM with a K04 and emerald would be 280ish, with garret/ihi this would push it to 350ish but this is the limit of the internals of the 1.8t, a mate at work had an ihi ibiza cupra and made 347bhp and he said he always worried he was sailing to close to the wind with standard internals.

I was thinking 1.8t rather than VRT purely as i have been told the fuel economy is about 40+ on the motor way and average is about 30. You run your VRT daily right? how many miles do you cover?

So with a VRT your working with old engines, whats the best way to ensure a solid spec as my aim is 400, what ever my decision i want to build the engine seperately and then look to install it rather than work with my own so is it best start with an old knackered engine and rebuild the head with bigger valves? forged rods pistons etc? (i appreciate this is probably covered in your build thread and the forced induction vr one but i am trying to get an idea where to start!) Or try and source a vgc low mileage or new head/block?
