How much is "really cheap" and for how long. If its low monthly payment Volkswagen are soon to be doing the Fox at £135 down, £135 per month plus free servicing

Citroen ZX 1.9TD - same chassis as the 306 so enjoyable to drive, cheap parts from GSF, don't rust, bombproof TD engines, and 55mpg!

Failing that, a 1.0 Polo!

^^^ I'll second that, they even go pretty well for a diesel

I thought all Corrado owners had 306TDi s as second (aka reliable) cars already? Did you pass that one by?? :)

I have to say for a cheap runround the MK1 Nissan Micra has to be the ultimate!! :D 50MPG, Group 1 Insurance, bullet proof engines and with a sh*t brown 80s jap interior you really can't go wrong!!

Mine cost me £30 quid with 3 months MOT and 4 months Tax. Needed a bit of filler around one of the arches a new centre section of exhaust and some new brake pads (all of which I had from a previous Micra!!). And all is well!

Of course if you are looking for somat classy I would go for somat else!!

It was reliable until the engine blew up last week! had o have a new engine, and need to sell it to recover the £1500 we've just had to spend on it, and now the CAT has decided to fcuk up, so need to get shot of it!

There are some good suggestions there, but was thinking of spending less than £500!

cant go too far wrong with older jap cars, parts are cheap and they seem to go forever, although a mate of mine bought a £300 mk3 fiesta a few years ago and never had a days bother with it, the old F.O.R.D gag certainly didnt apply. Other than that... a reliant robin?

mmm, Toyota wanted 500 quid for an indicator stalk for a 1988 Carina a couple of months back  makes VW look cheap.

How about a MK2 Gti 8v?

You can pick up a half way decent one for under 500, there's more parts for them than you can shake a spanner at, mine averages at 33mpg (and I DON'T drive it nice!), it's quick enough to scare other 'fast' cars on the road, they can go on forever and if the engine does eventually let go, Big Boys Toys can get you a brand new, fully rebuilt one for around 500!

Not to mention you still get to drive a VW!!

This man speaks the truth, I had one of them a looooong time ago and got hit in the side by an escort van, the drivers side of the car was mangled with barely any damage to the 'scort.

Oh and the handling in the wet was very scary, even with decent rubber there was no grip. Otherwise it was a nice little runabout.

if its a super quick car you're after, then you want a Fiesta Zetec 1.25, because this lad swears by them.... wtf?

Nothing wrong with a Fiesta 1.2S Zetec - exactly what the Mrs drives and I nick when the C is off the road.

And 180km/h = 111mph, which is about right, downhill!

£25 of petrol to fill and does more than the C's £60 ;)
