Is Standard The New Mod?

Just having a philosophical discussion with my bored self this morn and got thinking about mods etc, as you do.

 

Then I thought, with the amount of modified C's (cosmetic or otherwise), is the fact that you have a completely standard C rarer than the fact theres a lot of changed cars out there?

 

It's almost like a new mod.

"Woah, nice man!"

 

Also, quite a few people I've spoke to who are 'into VW's' and also some on the forum say it's nice to see a standard car nowadays.

It is nice to see a corrado (almost) the way VW intened every now and again, since as you say the vast majority of them will have been modified in some way shape or form, however I dont think having an immaculate 'classic' car is anything new, the flat cap brigade have been restoring more modern classics (mk1 escorts/cortinas etc) to concourse levels for years. Personally I think VW got it right at the time the corrado was produced, so theres no need for bodykits etc, but theres alot to be said for modernising the ride height, its really the only thing a standard Corrado needs to make it look really nice.

The only thing that i think makes the C look dated is the rear lights. Other than that, I agree that Standard looks sweet as. Ride hight is also an issue, but personally dont really see that as much of a mod, as its almost as cheap to lower the car when it needs new suspension, as it is get standard shox/springs!

Most people that buy Rados and especially those from a VW background often have dillusions of keeping a Corrado standard, but it seldom lasts :-) The honeymoon period ends after a fortnight in Standard form. If you bought a VR6, the humiliation of having your drive-thru food handed to you via a step ladder can only be suffered for so long....and then inevitabley, the coilovers find their way onto the car....and there it all starts. One mod necessitates another....

 

As Benny Hill said, the bodywork is pretty spot on, with the handles and orange plastic being the only reminders of it's era.

 

There's no way I'd own a standard one now. They're too slow and too wallowy....

Easily done isn't it??!

 

I can guarantee if I bought a brand new car.... that would also end up being modded to hell, so once modding is in your blood, no car you'll ever buy again will stay standard!

you're right there, once you know its possible and pretty stright forwards to alter the little bits and bobs you don't like about your car it becomes hard to resist. Its a dangerous path though. For example you've said yourself you couldnt have a standard VR after owning the Haywire-waggon, and we all know a standard VR is a damn sight better than 75% of the cars that're being churned out today, a modified SVR has to leave you with a choice of about 10% of the (realisticly obtainable) production cars if you wanted to upgrade and get better handling/performance. TBH there arent many cars I'd own over a corrado (yes i know i dont have one now!) given the choice, for the money you simply can not find anything close... even for double the money in alot of cases!

Guy H bought his new or ex demo from a showroom IIRC and his has been modded to hell!

Modding is fun and keeps you in love with the car.

If you DID buy the GTI, what would you do with your Corrado? I know this is hypothetically speaking, but let's say you bought it tomorrow. Would you sell your Corrado? Would you keep both cars? Would you have the GTI for a little while and sell it on?

 

And curiously, have you driven one yet? What do you think?

 

 

My thinking on the matter is to upgrade/update only "necesary" parts (on the Corrado anyway). For example we all think the lights and the standard ride height, upgrade the brakes etc etc, but lookswise, it's absolutely spot-on IMHO.

They are no doubt very good cars but unfortunately I'm seeing as many MK5 GTIs as CTRs at the moment which really puts me off them!

i've driven an mk5 and the only thing i liked about it was the fact it was using someone else fuel and my Corrado would still be clean when i got back to it.

 

Would rather have a rare Rado, just the stance and uniqueness of them does it for me. like when ppl say i have a Clio 182 ,ok so it might have 182 bhp and be fast but its still a clio.

OEM+ is the best I reckon. A little lowering here, some new brakes there, couple of little changes to repeaters and maybe a badge or two, and thats it. Only other things would be a tint on the rear lights.

 

You cant beat the original look imho ;)

theres a black one up for sale on the E38 forum running (i think) mono's, looks flippin' amazing! Dont get me wrong, theres the odd new car I'd have, but spending 20k on a car boggles my fragile mind
