JIMMI'S CORRADO WITH 06 GOLF GTI TFSI RUNNING GEAR

Recommended Posts

Update time guys,

ive done a load of work on the VR6 over the past few weeks so i thought id update my thread.

Firstly i carefully parked the car up in my garage and set about stripping it down, i removed every single part from the front of the car apart from the wiring harness, the engine and box came out along with every mortal part from the front suspension and engine bay.

I headed to my local VW dealer (they love me there) with a shopping list, i bought, Balljoints, track rods, track rod ends, bottom arms, drop links, ARB bushes, rear & gearbox mounts, wheel bearings,CV joints, inner CV boots, Steering rack gaitors, And every bolt, nut & clip from the suspension and engine bay.

i spent an absolute fortune but my plan is for the car to be much better than new when its finished, im sure the pictures below will show this !

The front & rear subframes, Eibach ARB, Track rods and a load of brackets & mounts from the engine & engine bay where sent off to be powder coated, while they where being taken care of i prepped and repainted the engine bay along with the wheel hubs & new bottom arms.

I rebuilt all of the rear subframe & suspension on the bench and reinstalled it on the car complete, i fitted a reconditioned steering rack @ the same time. look @ the pics, it looks fantastic i know all the bolts and fixings where expensive but it would of been pointless building all the nice new parts up with rust bolts !! I put the oe suspension on back on the car as i didnt want the nice new coilovers sitting on the car doing nothing.

A lot has changed on the engine side of the car, I have ordered a load of nice shiny parts from SP performance in the states, A set of 3.0 Forged JE pistons, Special Crank bearings, Another set of ARP engine bolts, Schimmel camshafts, Schimmel head rebuild parts & steel Head Gasket.

I had planned to pull my 64k mile engine apart and fit all of these, i did infact however have a little bit of a brainwave. Another forum member TOONVW who is pretty local to me had a poorly engine in his VR and was looking for a replacement lump. We agreed a deal and i fitted my lovely engine into Andy's Blue VR6, my thinking was that i was going to completely rebuild & rebore the engine that would eventually go into my red VRT so i might as well do this to an engine that needed some cylinder work rather than to my perfect engine ! My old engine is now in its new home and is running just as it should so it was a good plan !

I have completely stripped toonvw's motor and sent the block off to be rebored out to 93.5mm (3.0), the crank has been checked and send off to be balanced, the flywheel has also been sent off to be slightly lightened and balanced. The bare head has been sent off to be vapour blasted, pressure checked and have a very light skim a minor bit of porting work is also being done @ the same time. Im hoping to have all the parts back in the first week of jan so i can rebuild the engine.

This week i also started the interior, i have fitted some black leather TT seats which was a doddle im now trying to fine some oe looking switches for the heating part of them. I briefly fitted the matching TT rear seats but wasnt keen on them, ive decided that i am now going to have no rear seats, with a flat boot/rear compartment and a nice weld in roll cage instead. To be honest the car would never have anyone in the back so the seats would be a waste and at least the roll cage has a purpose !!

I have dropped the door cards off to be retrimmed to match the new seats and i am also having the headcloth retrimmed in black alcantara.

I hope you like the pictures, your comments are always welcomed, ive just bought another rado so im going to channel a bit of time into that car while im waiting for the engine bits to be returned for the VRT.

You dont mess about do you Jimmi??

Some great work being put in there, i wouldnt dare take anything on of that difficulty. The seats do look really smart!!

If you ever fancy doing any more major work to other peoples cars (namely mine) in the future then i may have some business for you.

you have been very very busy mate, and it all looks like a very high level of work, just done forget to put the brakes on before you take the car out again, how easy was it to fit the TT seats then??

I wondered where you'd gone, seems you've been a busy man!

This is my kind of car, no expense spared to do a proper job, hats off to you mate 8)

Just one thing though....

sent the block off to be rebored out to 93.5mm (3.0)

I assume you meant 83.5mm ;-) 93.5mm would amusingly be outside the block almost, but great capacity, LOL!

T70 + 3.0..... jesus H man.... that's going to be utterly ballistic!

A word on running in your new 3.0...... thrash the balls off it straight away for the first 20 miles. Schimmel has proven that this bedding in method gives a much better engine. That's how I did mine......freshly installed, drove it up the road, round to 6K in 3rd, 4th and 5th and then all day on the dyno 8)

There was quite a lot of metal in the sump when I got home, but that's exactly what I wanted to see!

Oh and when you do thrape it, make sure you coast down on the over-run in each gear too to keep oil Pressure up....

Looking forward to this one.... I'm behind already, again, everyone is getting bigger turbos than me.....LOL!

Been a while since i posted on here !

KADVR6

TT seat where a bit of a bitch tbh, ive seen another guy on here fit them but when i tried to do it that way the base of the seat was too high and my mullet was touching the roof ! I ended up ba$tardising the subframes to make the seats sit as low as i wanted, if you want any help i can show you exactly what i did.

Bigben

Never spoke to him personally mate, but i had a lot of emails from him when i was ordering and stuff and he seemed a good fella, his stuff is A1 and the service is great, thumbs up from me !

CHEESEGRATER

Cheers for the comments mate, car is coming on now, I want it to be ready for sometime in April its going to be a summer weather car only from now on ive spent too much time on the suspension & engine bay to get it up th the tits in the rain so I will be taxing it for the 1st of May all goin to plan.

Ive bought a load more bits for the car in the past month or so, i even statted to tot up how much i had tied up in the car i stopped when i get to 12k and still had a big pile of receipts in my hand, its a lot of money to of spent considering ive only had it 9mths ! But i think the end result will be worth it, it has been completely rebuilt from top to bottom with every consumable replaced with new vag bits and it has THAT engine ! The car is still in bits with parts in crates all over the place but my plan is not to touch it until i have every single part, i think i could reassemble it in a good day which is better than a few hours here and there.

Here is a quick rundown on what ive been doin since the last update !

Engine: The motor is pretty much all assembled and ready to go, i managed to source a brand new VR6 crankshaft from a dealers old stock, the block was rebored to a 3.0 and i have fitted JE lowered comp pistons along with Glyco engine bearings and shells. The oil return has been tapped into the block instead of the sump. i painted the block in bright yellow and had the brand new sump and engine mounts powder coated in silver. The head was vapour blasted then had the tiniest skim before being pressure tested, i then rebuilt it with new VAG lifters, seals, guides and brand new valves. I refitted the head using a schimmel steel head gasket and ARP bolts, a set of Shimmel FI camshafts where also fitted followed by a custom painted rocker cover. i replaced the chains and guides etc as well as all new engine sensors etc. The only thing i am waiting on for the engine now is the oil filter housin and the belt tensioner to be returned from the polishers. The engine is sat on my engine stand now and it looks ace, its gonna be a shame to put it under the bonnet !!

Interior: TT seats are in, i need some storm heated seat switches to wire them in anyone know how much they are new ?? the door card are back from the trimmers they have been fone in black nappa leather to amtch the seats. Ive made a start on the roll cage, i initially wanted a proper cage but ive now decided on a good strong bolt in one, a weld in one isnt gonna be very practical tbh !

Suspension: All the mechanical bits have been rebuilt and changed, im still undecided on the shocks and springs, i know one thing the koni coilovers arent goin back on, im honestly thinking of some non coilover koni's ive always used them on my other cars and they have been ace, i wont be running the car very low as i want some motorbike chasin B road action so i think they will be fine !

Exterior: nothing is gonna change apart fron a repair to the front wing, i chipped some paint off it when doin the suspension ! Bugger !

Ill get some pics up asap ive been far too busy to do it lately !

500hp here we come !!

Nice one!! 500hp... the T70 will give you a lot more than that :-)

You'll like the Schimmel spec 3.0, makes the midrange boost kick really hard. Looking forward to seeing the built motor, got any pics?

That is going to be one mint Rado when fully complete, it'll be practically brand new from head to toe!!

reminds me of rebuilding mk2 escort crossflow engines - another train of thought is to crank the engine over dry for the rings to bed into the cylinder walls - done this before and it works -

i'll second this method but by dry cranking as a similar proposal to thrashing as suggested by mr schimmel - in case everyone was thinking the wires had totally lost the plot with such a wild suggestion

Yeah i think with some tweaking and a bit of bottle 700hp will be attainable, not too sure how long it would last for @ that hp tho !!

The car will be just like new, every part of the car has been removed and replaced or powdercoated, infact it will be better than new, the only thing im leaving is the paint which is perfect anyway.

Ive got another VR of 93 vintage which i am in the process of breaking, my plan is to keep the shell and convert it to 4wd using a Haldex setup, this is more of a long term plan tho, (next winter) i think ill buy a cat B Audi TT or R32 (breakers licence comes in handy!) to act as a donor, i dont really want to chop the floor etc out of this car its too nice !!

Na your right mate and kev hasnt been smoking jamaican woodbines ! for a performance engine running in like a pussy is a no no ! My process on the bike motors i build (a few) are to build the motor with a bit of slik 50 on the bits as they are assembled. Before the oil is filled i normally spray a load of brake cleaner down the bores than turn the engine over for a while, it works similar to H8RRA's dry cranking method apart from it will flush any small bits of dirt etc out with the brake cleaner. after that fill the oil and run it for 5 mins or so on tick over checking for leaks obscure noises etc, turn it off until its cooled down a bit. Restart engine and run it on the roads working it hard for a few miles then let it cool, do this 3 or 4 times and then its run in process is finished, i know i can give it back to the customer and no matter what he does it will be fine ! If you look @ this website http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm the guy explains the theory in more detail, read it and see if it makes sense !

Ive just taken delivery of my EMERALD K3 management system from dave walker, i ordered it a month or so ago but ive been waiting for the loom to be made. The ECU looks ace, its the latest one which has 3 switchable maps. speaking to Dave about it he seems quite keen to map the car he told me he has just done a charged golf which was runnin past his rollers max reading of 450bhp, he is quite keen to see what mine will run. The car is provisionally booked in for the last weekend in march so i have a deadline to work to, i just need to get this 16v press car finished so i can crack on with the VRT.

Im off to the garage now !!

Ah, MotoMan, I stumbled on that site a while back and he's got some good info in there. I like his 'gallery' of pistons :-)

The only reservation I have against dry cranking is you only have 20 miles worth of honing for the rings to cut into, and you need high cylinder pressures to force the rings onto the bore walls to give a nice cut.....but the dry cranking with brake cleaner is defo worth a shot for a few turns. A magnetic sump plug would be nice too!

Looking forward to seeing how the Emerald works out. I will pop down to Walker's when you get it mapped as he's local to me. I want to chat to him about it aswell, so give me a shout when you've got a set date :-)

The brake cleaner does work well as i "rinses" the bores out nicely !

Ive got big hopes for the Emerald i think kev, im looking like getting down there on the last weekend in march it gives me a bit of a deadline to work to ! I think ill be there for the weekend so you might have to tell me where the best travellodge is kev !

Im in a bit of quandry as to what to do, im thinking of fetching the car down on my car trailer as its a long drive from sunderland down to there and i dont really want any "teething" problems on the way there, i think i will run the car in up here for a few hundred miles with the boost wound right off running the oe management just to sort any leaks etc out then ill trailer it down to dave where i can connect the emerald up and send some boost into it !

I started lining all the parts up in my garage today ready to start going into the car, the engine is looking ace its going to be a shame to hide it away !

Ill get some pics up !

What wastegate spring have you got? 8psi is OK with the standard injectors and a decent rising rate reg, but you'll get the odd bit of MAF clipping here and there, but it'll get you to Dave's no probs.

There are a couple of Hotels on the A47, not sure how far they are from Dave as I haven't been to his workshop yet.

I hope you have more luck with your engine than I have had with mine so far :-(

UPDATE TIME

Things have changed again for my corrado, i think i must be crazy sometimes but i like a challenge !! Ive sold the Schimmel 3.0 motor along with the SRI, Chargecooler & turbo kit & the TT seats are coming out as well.

What am i gonna do ?

Well my plan was to go NA R32 but after a month or two of searching for a motor i got itchy feet and started looking at a few other things from a R36 to a 4.2V8 S4 motor but what i found at a local salvage yard changed my mind. I have found a CAT B (break only) 2006 56 plate golf GTI, its the one with the 2.0 TFSI motor DSG box etc. its only done 400 miles.

A deal was struck and ive basically bought best part of the car, roughly including, complete interior inc dash etc, complete running gear from intercooler to fuel tank. I started stripping the car out over there but it was a nightmare so 2moro they are dropping the car off at my garage so i can take the bits off i need at my leisure, they are gonna pick the shell up when im done.

My plans are to fit the complete loom from the golf along with the dash & seats. The engine is going in along with the ESP and all the air con gubbins, basically it will be a mk5 Golf in a corrado bodyshell, a lot of work but it will be worth it, i started today and i think it will be done in less than 2 months if everything goes to plan.

A couple of pics below as a taster !!

Wow, can't wait to see how this turns out.

Bet you'll change your mind next week though! ;)

This must be the first 2.0 FSI conversion?

bleedin hell Jimmi, is there nothing you wont undertake??? i have driven an audi A4 quattro with this engine in, i was very impressed with it. should be alot better in a much lighter car, the torque was what most impressed me about the engine.

thats going to be an interesting engine to tune, both a supercharger and a turbo to mess with? still i cant help but think we might be reading a thread about the worlds first coal powered corrado in a weeks time ;)

its always interesting reading through these build-up threads, you certainly seem to know no fear when it comes to projects so I'm looking forwards to watching this progress!
