NEWS : AmD sold & relocating to Essex

Yeah I heard they were in trouble at the start of the year... I don't think it's any great loss to the VW tuning scene really (not for our cars anyway) but it's a shame these specialists keep loosing the reputations they have built up...

 

I assume they are going in a different unit to BBT's as the existing one is tiny??

Shaun "The Hilbilly" Hollamby strikes again....

 

Remember when he was competing in, and sponsoring, and sole engine supplier to the (Old) Beetle cup.... His car seemed to be a good 5-10mph quicker down the pit straight at Brands (as was teh guy who actually built the engines and worked for Shaun), yet when checked it was "The same spec"....

 

Also remember BBT tend to stock (or certainly did in the past) the cheapest Taiwanese tat you ever saw, I remember seeing a set of "Triple Chrome" bumpers rust over a Bug Jam weekend and it only rained once!

 

Shame I can also remember when AMD were the nuts in VW tuning...

I only know AMD from back in the mid 90's when it was Geoff and Mike (names correct?). They were really good then.

 

Is this now "Dumbing Down" of the tuning industry?

Me too. It's a huge shame that the once great little company which Geoff & Scott ran out of Oddington years ago, has now just become a piece of Badge engineering for someone else. All the guys who made AmD great have left since Scott emigrated a couple of years ago.

 

As for the other issue you bring up, I seem to recall (although unsurprisingly it's hard to find anything in the archives) that a certain Golf R32 had some trouble on the rollers at the end of the 2005 season?

Why Am I not Surprised?

 

.... the news of his surprise exclusion from the results of last month's sixth round of the championship at Knockhill following post-race scrutiny. The R32 was found to be over power despite being checked before every race this year, including Knockhill, and being well within the power limits. Hollamby is appealing the decision and is confident of reversing the outcome.
From the 2005 season....

 

Some people never learn do they? Sheesh!

Are they the same BBT pattern parts GSF sell? I bought a set of BBT VR6 leads a few years ago and they fell apart in my hand as I took them out of the bag, absolute garbage!!

Apart from their over optimistic crank hp 'doctoring' (in order to sell their rechips), they weren't too bad, they were never amazing. Geoff was the key player and was pretty much the Grandfather chip tuning in this country......until he cleared off to Canada. Seems a few UK tuners head off that way. Bigger market, bigger income.

 

TSR went belly up, dodgy feckers.

 

Birch left Dubsport, I think his talent outgrew the company possibly.

 

The only old school proper enthusiast, non money grabbing tuners left are Brian Ricketts, Jim Cotton and Vince Saiya.

 

There's a few fly by nighter's coming out of the woodwork at the moment, but I know where my loyalty lies.

It is a great shame when companies made a reputation by being the best, turn into a business for making money and cease to really care about their customers. I think that is when they start having real problems.

So what happened with TSR? When I went down there to get my Cabro's suspension done they provided excellent servce good prices and Tim took me out in the Stealth Jetta VR6 too (damn that was quick!)

 

Mind you that was Years ago...?95?

Nathan and Ed from AMD are great guys and left there last year to set up http://autops.co.uk/ (APS Services). Nathan was the AMD VR6 man and has been great with my car - really careful and they don't rip you off - give them a try.

 

Blimey, VAG tuners are cropping up every where!

 

But again, it's mostly easy, but expensive Revo tune ups. High profit, minimal effort. No wonder so many people are getting into this chipping game. The hands-on innovative engineers from the 90s VW tuning scene have long since gone. As mentioned earlier, only a few of them remain.

 

Nowadays, if you haven't got a VAG 1.8T, a lot of tuners don't want to know because that's all they know, and generic bolt ons....like cams, schricks, brakes etc.

Hell mend AMD, I say.

 

I asked for a quote by email for something costing about £150 about 3 years ago - they never bothered answering it.

I went elsewhere (C&R). AMD lost a sale, a customer and his concern for them . Now they have gone down the tubes? - it figures.

 

Remember guys, the customer IS king. Our hard earned dosh has to go to those who care.

they did the magnex on my corrado in 2003 under new management - I'm not too happy with the fitting though - Id been with a different Storm back in 98 and talked to Tim Stiles for ages, he infected me with his enthusiasm. None of this the second time, and I suspect there's a join leak on the exhaust.

AMD went into liquidation, and the software, name and website have been bought by BBT...nothing else.

 

Sounds like BBT are looking for other tuners in the bicester area to take in some of the people who arent prepared to travel to essex.

 

And theres us only in aylesbury.......;)

One point BR Motor Services is nothing to do with Brian Ricketts anymore :( More's the pity, but they had their own troubles a few years ago.

oh well sh!t happens yet another bullsh!t vw specialist gone!!!! at the end of the day they are a GARAGE.... why does specialist in their title mean they have to charge more, i wouldn't bother with any apart from 2 that have good reputations on here..... special name = special prices!!!

 

BBT are wlecome to them,,,, like you have afore mentioned they are max power tat sellers at best...

I couldn't agree more, amd had a good reputation and it was tarnished by greedy behaviour recently so I say good riddance to the modern re-incarnation.
