Charlie's Corrado VR6 Turbo

Recommended Posts

Well, I've owned my car for a little over six years now. I've only been on here a few months but reckoned it was about time I got some pics of the mota up.

Being involved with the CCGB but also having been to 3 CF meets now, I've had a chance to meet quite a few of you nice people and admire loads of great cars. Well here's some photos of mine. Some of you will note that there have one or two changes under the bonnet since these were taken in Feb this year. When I get sorted, I'll get some of the new bay. In the meantime, enjoy the pics of it how it was until just a few weeks ago!! :D

Now Charlie that Ramair isnt a resident under your bonnet any longer...

I rate this car so highly becasue of its power and the fact it is so understated, simply awesome...

And i still stand by the statement that you seats are better than mine...

About time Charlie! Pic's look cool. I hope I'll be seeing the beast in a couple of weeks time, getting used to the 'charger whine?

Thanks for the nice comments fellas. It was about time I got this one in here. I've been utterly useless getting my photos sorted out and reduced in size though; but thanks to Vornwend, that's now sorted. So you can expect more when I get organised.

Yes the 'charger is great. I am getting very used to the 'charger whine, and I'm loving it!! apparently it gets quieter as time goes by...not really too bothered. But there is a real racket in the car at about 3000rpm. Not so much the charger as the engine without the 'cat fitted. Its really quite boomy. Still I'm living with it all pretty happily, and it puts a massive grin on my face everytime I start it up, let alone drive it....

Yep, it does get quieter, especially on tickover.. Mine used to sound real clattery on tick over, but after running it for 2000 miles, it's quietened down loads. Afraid the schrieking at about 2.5 - 3k doesn't go though...

Nice pics Charlie, looks real tidy, esp the interior. Hvae you had the slam panel sorted yet? Also, what figures did you get when it was mapped?

Steve, I have still got to pick up my printouts from Nickvr6 who has hold of them after I left them up with Vince by accident  . The answer re power is I'm not sure 'til I've seen them, but Nick seemed to think that - with our maps being very similar now - about 290bhp is what I reckon. :D

Reminds me: I must get onto Nickvr6 to get the printouts off him!

Well, had a reasonably productive day today. Ross (Tekara) came over and we had a crack at fitting the 288s, which I've been sorting out. Unfortunately, an overly tight brake hose connection put paid to that. :( Thanks must also go to Nickvr6 for helping me out at very short notice with a set of 288 discs :thumb right: , although as it turns out, all to no avail. I'll have to take the car to the local specialist and get a proper brake spanner on it.

Still we made the most of the time, and sorted out the fitting of the SWG vent gauge pod and DDS3 gauge. Looks great now.

Also, I spent last evening wrapping my Raceland 6-branch manifold, ready to fit it soon.

Nice work, gotta ask where did you get hold of the heat wrap (i've seen a few different manufacturer's / types outs there) as i've managed to get hold of one of those Raceland's too and need to do the same to mine before it goes on! Also roughly how much (metreage) did you need to wrap it fully.

cheers

Alex

Coming together nicely Chaz, shame about the brakes but sure it'll get sorted soon.

Looking forward to the Bristol meet (as long as it doesn't tip it down all day like today!).

Alex

I used Thermo-Tec heat wrap, which I think I paid about £50 for, off the 'Bay. The size was 2 inches wide by 50 ft (15m long). It was only just enough and I had to plan how much to use for each bit to make sure I was going to have enough. I wrapped the headers first, then the centre section, then the bottom. I wrapped each section from bottom up, so that, for instance, the centre wrap overlapped the bottom of the wrap on the headers. To save you the trouble here are the approx lengths I used for each section:

headers (x6) 5.5 ft

centre section (6 into 2 section) (x2) 5 ft

bottom (2 into 1 section) 7 ft (total = 50 ft)

The other thing I did was use a spray bottle filled with water to soak the wrap as i put it on the manifold. This way it becomes a bit more pliable and slightly stretchy and sticks a little better top the manifold surface. I used a total of 20 snap staps to fix the wrap in place. Around the centre and bottom sections, I had to join 2 together, which is not a problem, but I did use all 20 I had, so again, plan where you put them. I reckon the whole thing took me about 4 hrs while I watched the telly. Oh, and you'll get covered in tiny flecks of (in my case) copper-coloured metal fillings that come off the wrap.

I have ordered some heat-resistant fixing spray to coat the wrap in, to 'fix' the whole thing, before I have it fitted. That should arrive early next week.

Good luck with yours, mate. :D

No Michael, I'll have to wait until next week and take it to the local garage. We just couldn't undo the blessed nut ourselves. It seemed we aere starting to round it off, which is bad karma, so we stopped!! :(

Nevermind.

Are you going to the Bristol meet tomorrow? Loving your car in the new avatar. Looking properly mean and low on that suspension. :D

The nut rounded between the flexi hose and the solid line when i did mine, i hacksawed the solid line and then swaged a new union on and it was straight forward from then on...

Expect a phone call tomorrow morning...

Well, its been a while since I updated this thread, and a fair amount of work has been done on the car since then...

new KW coilies, 288 brakes fitted, 6-branch manifold now on (what a PITA to fit!!), dewipered rear, red tinted rear lights and alu dial rings.

The KWs are fantastic. The ride is soooo much better than my old Koni TA's and Eibach set up. Far more OE-type comfort, if a little stiffer, but absolutely no crashiness. The 288 brakes are off a Passat, and have the Banjo bolt fitment, but I sourced the Goodridge hoses from Vince and they've gone on a treat. The difference in braking performance between the standard 280mm set up and these is like night and day. A great mod.

....Oh, and the new wheels! I've always wanted a set of the ZW1's, but the price of them new has always put me off. I got these ones recently from Zak for a pretty reasonable sum. They're in great nick too. There's a bit of stretch on the rubber over the 8in wide rims, as the tyres are only 205 width. I need to replace the front two tyres, which I'll do this week. I also think I might be able to drop the front suspension about 5-10mm, as I think the rears are just slightly lower than the front. However, I am also conscious that at the moment the front arched are not rolled, so want to avoid any rubbage.

Oh, and a big thanks to Tekara for sorting out my broken headlight switch recently..top bloke! :D

I was speaking to CrazyDave today at Castle Combe, about his Motronic adventures, and I'm keenly following his progress. My car is running well, but I'm not totally happy with the remap, so am considering other options - that involve either a MAF (currently mapped without one)...or standalone, so we'll see.

Next mod - I've got some DubPower 10mm HT leads to fit this week. Peter Collins - another top bloke - has sent them over for me to try out. He reckons they'll make a noticeable difference to the performance/smoothness of the engine, over the standard leads I'm running at the moment. I'm looking forward to trying them. :D

Even if I do say it myself, I'm pretty happy with the car now. Its just sorting out little bits and pieces. I just need to drive it more!

A few pics of the car, taken over the last couple of days.
