Matt black, cure for crap paintwork?

I have a tornado red valver. The bonnet has two dodgy bits of paint on, and loads of deep scratched due to rubbish mechanics. The bumpers have paint missing. There is a 4" square patch of paint that just fell off my side skirt. Its hard a partial respray at some point, and its becoming obvious where the paint match is. I have scratches all over the place, and the roof is pink.

 

Now, ive considered spraying it Matt black, as i can get this done for a few hundred quid. What are your opinions on this? Good idea? Or just a get out for people that dont wanna pay £2k on a respray and cant be arsed with cleaning it every week?

Although think you would have to live with the constat taunts of "when you getting the paint finished?" Or coming back to it covered in chalk?

I've owned a matt black car in the past, it was a series 1 mk3 escort, looked the dogs dangles to be fair.

 

Im just sick of the paintwork on the car. I could never justify £2k on painting a daily valver, so i just think that matt black would not only be something different, but it would be easy to manage and would make me feel happier and the exterior

it kinda sounds like you've almost made your mind up mate? If its a daily driver and you dont have or dont want to spend 2k id def go for it, but doesnt have to be matt black,any colour can be matt?

why not just get a cheapo respray in the original colour on the bits that are in bad shape ??if you can live with a matt black car and the stigma that will go with it, then surely you can live with people saying 'they bodged the spray job on that one!' Think yourself lucky your respray will only cost £2k mines costing me £5500!

I want a very even and smooth finish, unstated almost (altho i know thats hard with matt black).

 

Im just gettin tired of having to try soooo hard to keep it looking even half decent.

 

But it wont be rat, honestly.

 

Can you get matt white? Or would that just look pants?

Dont think that would look too good, I think white paints are at their best when they have a deep gloss. A dark satin would probably look best, I'd get it black personally...

i never had all mine resprayed just the bits that were rough,it all came in @ less than a grand thats includin havin a new rear arch welded in,a for that money i cant complain @ the results,but @ 5.5k that must be a show car only,whens it gonna be complete?

why dont you get some pics up of the worse bits so we can have a better idea on whats needed to be done,i know an old boy who does resto work an would blow it over for you for about 6-700quid(dependin on if theres much rust etc)

i'm sure if spent a day goin round bodyshops you'd find one that can sort it all out for around the same price as the matt black

There's a blurry pic of a matt black 'rado at the top of this page. Interesting choice of wheel colour.

 

I guess ultimately it's down to you, I used to run a matt-blacked Kawasaki 550 bike when I was couriering in London years ago, but that was 100 per cent pure rat. It'd also make it hard to sell if that crosses your mind. I guess you could always matt black it, then save for a full-on paint job later down the line, but if you're going to do that, you might be better off just living with the paintwork as is for now and putting the money towards a proper paint job?

Its not just the cost, its also the constant care that is needed with red cars, and the constant worry of scratching the paint etc, but i'll get some pics up for some opinions

this may seem a wierd question but why if its only costing 200 ish for a matt respray,why would it be anymore for a normal finish? exept the paint been satin ? what paint are you thinking of using? like 2k guide coat or do you meen like bandq bbq paint?

id say its more a problem of keepin up to the type of paint you used!.

theres pics of me painting my car in the gallery if you want any pointers iv done a bike satin before ducati paint them matt.

but from £200 to £5500 its what your happy with,i only spent so mutch time buffing flatting myn etc you could go on forever then get chips anyway :)

True! My dad wasn't impressed when he saw the pic!

 

He's had a few in the past, 1.6laser and a 2.8i, really didnt want to the sell the 2.8i. It sold the same day it was put in autotrader. The guy rang up, said he would have it for definate without coming to look first, then jumped on the next train, came from wales too!

what you have to realise is that the cost of the respray has nothning to do with the paint itself. Its the labour of paying someone to do the prep work and then spraying it, so you'd probably be just as well off getting it sprayed the same colour. Cheapo resprays usually mean cheapo work, the reason mine is costing so much is that the guy is a legend at using 'old style' lead filler, whereas most bodyshops these days use a modern 'easy to use' filler that sinks after a while, meaning you need to get it done again, and again until its done, with lead filler you dont hence why im getting it done properly the first time.

 

If i had £1k to spend on my bodywork, id get the rust sorted, any holes/dents filled properly and then a cheap respray in the same colour, that way at least you know you have a straight rust free shell thats ready for a good respray when you can afford it. after all if you are willing to drive a matt black car its highly unlikely you care what people think about the colour/appearance of your car!

mines been battered an scratched loads since i had it painted,but then again i was never tryin to achieve a show winnin car,i just wanted a smart eye catchin daily drive,which i think i've achieved?so if yours is a daily like mine i'd get the best cheap respray in the same colour as she is now,an just try an keep on top of the waxin,i can let mine go several weeks without washin it,but because i always wax :norty: the dirt just washes of easy mate,
