Current Car Styling

Me and a mate were talking about the current way that cars are styled. There are no crazy masculine styled mainstream cars anymore - where are the modern Cosworths? The sporty versions of normal hatchbacks these days are not as wild looking - where are the bonnet vents, side skirts and huge spoilers!!

 

Anyone else agree?

There's a guy who lives next to me whose got a battered F reg Sierra Cosworth. Part of me hates it. Especially when the fecker blocks the pavement outside my house with it. But another part of me loves it. Wouldn't mind a drive in it...

I'm talking about "sporty" versions of normal cars. If you looked at a normal Mk IV Escort then an RS Turbo - the differences in performance and styling were huge! You just don't seem to get that these days - the new Focus ST for example - looks good but it's just not different enough.

Personally I quite like the current understated philosophy when it comes to performance hatch backs at least. The new golf GTI is awesome. I can't imagine it would look any better with vents and wings all over the place. I guess it's down to taste but I think cars now look more refined and less tacky. And the Corrado is hardly in your face, it stands out because it is a superb piece of styling that grabs your attention, looks as fresh now as it did 20 years ago, without going down the OTT route. When people try to do all those crazy styling mods with body kits and extra spoilers it just ruins it IMO. One thing I do like is leery colours though. For example (although it's plainly not a "normal car") I would prefer the looks of a DB9 in yellow to the looks of the DBS. I've tried to like it I really have, but I prefer the DB9. The DBS is too plastic body kit like for me. So if I was going for an ST it would be Acid Orange every time.

Know what you mean - I went with a friend who looked at a new Cupra Leon last month and it's barely distinguishable from the standard motor, bar a couple of badges and some grille mods. At least the LCR was a bit more bulked up than the normal shopping trolley version :?

Well Vauxhall are adding chavvy bits of bodykit, skirts, gills, vents, wings and god-knows what to all VXR cars. It's interesting that you seem to miss these addenda, as VXR sales figures would indicate that new car buyers don't miss them at all.

 

What is curious is that chav jewellery (in the form of carbon fibre roofs, funny bonnet scoops & vents etc) do seem to becoming popular on top German executive supersaloons such as the AMG Mercs and M-Bimmers. Seems your average exec increasingly wants a car worthy of poof-Daddy to park outside his executive 'crib' these days.

 

All I can say is that having been a teenager during the 1980s when Koeing, Reiger and Mattig bodykits were all the rage, I really am pleased they're gone. I know the Japs re-invented the bodykit look for a few years during the late 90's & early 00's, but even those are now becoming a parody of themselves nowadays. Like Shoulder Pads and Kajagoogoo, some things are best left behind in the 1980s.

 

Classic old skool styling, the clean euro-look and rat motors still endure and always will. Plastic bodykits are for girls and betwetters.

Lol - glad it's sparking some interesting opinions.

 

I hate Chavvy styling but I feel that modern motors have lost their styling flair - look at the styling of the Corrado - just follow that s-shaped curve from the rear spoiler - down the rear quarter all the way to the front wing - gorgeous. So many hatches look so similar now - Polos, Fiestas, Puntos etc - there's not the same design flair.

 

I suppose it's just a sign of the times - look at some of the designs of 50s and 60s America - gave the cars personality - that's one main reason I've not bought a newer car - modern cars (well ones I can afford) don't have the same charisma as older ones.

The problem with many of the more designs ithat consist of skirts, vents, spoilers etc is that they tend to date very quickly, look at how dated a Seires 1 Escort RS Turbo looks when compared to a Mk2 GTi 16V or 205 GTi 1.9.

 

I liked the look of the Astra VXR when I first saw pictures of it but a neighbour has one and even now its starting to look dated.

 

Clean, simple lines always wear the test of time best of all

It is interesting to see that many magazine articles, at the time of the Corrados launch were actually quite negative about the cars styling, saying it was either plain or already dated - its definitely a car which time has been extremely kind to, much like the current 5 series BMW which has definitely grown more appealling with time (my opinion only of course :lol: )

Absolutely. I was very very negative about the "Bangle'd" BMW's when they first started hitting the streets but now I've really changed my mind on them. Actually I think I prefer the styling of most modern BMW's to most modern Audi's! And I never thought i'd say that!

 

The 3 series looks more understated than the Audi A4's and A5's (and more specifically the awful S5 which I absolutely detest) - the BMW 335i is far more discreet. Even the M3 isn't that in your face.. though must admit i've not seen many on the roads yet.

I read an article comparing the Corrado, Probe and MR2 and the reviewers said that the Probe would age the best and the Corrado the worst! :lol:

Looking at the spy shots I've seen it'll be a "Scoop and skirt-tastic" motor!

 

Mind you hitting the 60 in under 7.5 in something so damn small will feel like its taking 2-3 secs too!

tbh I don't think it's a bad thing that cars have become more subtle in their stying! When I first got the Leon I was a bit worried that it was still a bit too in your face but after living with it for a year I feel that it blends in quite nicely until you notice the big wheels and body kit - any more lairy and I'd be worried about leaving it anywhere! Think the grey paint also helps - yellow ones are just too in your face IMO 8)

Phil, they're spy shots, there's a photo on the front of this weeks Autocar or similar (saw it when shopping in Asda yesterday but wasn't allowed to stop and read it :D )
