3.2 24v, 1.8 20vt or other?

Recommended Posts

What are peoples opions on which engine conversion provides a great daily driver and obviously fast exciting weekender for the Corrado

I'm thinking what peoples experiences with cost, ease of installation, performance, future proofing (upgrades), daily-drive-ability, mpg, any irritations or niggles, etc

I know there are plenty of how to conversion guides on here but I thought this would be a good place for anyone thinking of doing a conversion to hear of the issues / joys from people that have done conversions or own a converted car

depends what your looking for! if your looking for about 280bhp then a 225 bhp (bam) 1.8t with the standard k04 will get about thsi with a remap on the custom management you woudl need to run and you woudl get similar figures witha remapped R32.

I've been down this thinking road and decided i want 450bhp, the cost of building a 1.8t a vr or r32 to this sort of spec (my chosen route is turbo) is very similar in terms of parts etc (if you take away the initial cost of the engine) so i decided i wanted to keep the spirt of the original car with a 12v vr and have bought a 2.8 aaa code engine and will be stripping it down and buildign with forged internals over the winter :D

o also its worth speaking to a few places, like storm developments, mv developments, stealth etc who have experiances of lots of corrado/golf conversions and will eb able to advise the best thing for your needs!

Thanks for the advice yeti! I have been up to Stealth a couple of times now and they really know their stuff. I'm not thinking about doing a conversion for a couple of years now, but I was aiming this more at people that have gone through the pain of converting or people that own a converted car and to hear their issues / joys with the conversion. Really this is to find out what conversion is best for a mean weekend / track car and which is best for a daily driver etc.

I was going to go down the 1.8 20vt conversion before I started modding my g60 lump, but after looking into it more I started talking to owners of 1.8 20vt converted cars and heard of some bad storys. Almost everyone was complaining of poor mapping even from specialists for daily and agressive driving. But time changes things and I went out in a Corrado on Tuesday that this guy had at the Hungerford VW Meet which had a 1.8 20vt pushing out 315bhp. We went for a steady drive round town to warm it up and it was smooth, quiet, comfortable and getting 38mpg!!! When we got to some country roads the thing was a beast! I mean seriously quick but still smooth. Turns out he got a recent remap up at Stealth. I guess I started this thread to hear where people have got it right and also where they have got it wrong.

I have a DBW AUQ 1.8T fitted in my Rado! It's all running std VW management so has no probs with being driven slowly around town or having it's neck wrung :) At the mo it's std, it was RR'd at awesome last year at 195Bhp and 205Torques! I have a full KO4 set-up to go on so should be looking at 280-290bhp when finished!

Have to say it's the best thing I've ever done, the engine suits the car so well!Puts a huge grin on my face everytime I get in and drive it!The motor just pulls and pulls, suprises quite a few cars  I recently drove it to Belgium and backto go to Club Charly's and it never missed a beat, even managed to squeeze 400 miles from the tank

Not trying to sound big headed but the install in mine is one of the best I've seen, looks very factory, very neat! Some just seem to be thrown in! I can't take credit for it, the 2 guys who did it are very good, highly recommended!

i have a 225 apx engine in myn running qpeng ecu with 2 stage boost so i run 180bhp ish while driving to work etc so i get good mpg then flick a switch gives 270bhp then it shifts on, so best of both.

its great to drive altho on full in the wet it cant put the power down it does in the dry. with a standard 2.0 16v box and vw clutch.

dont regret any bit of it i did use samco hoses and jointers etc so i built it to be reliable by not using any cheap parts.

starts runs fine only problem i had was a company did a bad recon job on my turbo as it was leaking a bit of oil past the seals. after the recon it only did 300 miles so i ended up with a brand new one other than that myns fine :)

yeah, i'd go for an R32. think its the best option. you get near 300bhp without any strain on the engine at all. and the potential for silly power. but the 20vt would be the cheaper option i presume.

r32 all the wayif it's a vr it's replacing. It's basically the modern VR, only a bit lighter and a bit more powerful. No intercoolers to mess about with, no extra bits to find places for. If it's a G60 donor, then I'd stay with the forced induction and go for a 1.8t.

The scope is there for both R32 and 20VT bases just money been the limiting factor and i agree depending on what your base car is will determine the engine upgrade choice.

I'd love to take the entire running gear, engine, loom and ECU from my missus 06 Polo GTI and stick that in a Corrado.

It's easily the smoothest and most driveable 1.8T engine I've ever driven. VW got the maps for that absolutely c0ck on compared to earlier 1.8T maps.

That's the route I would take for handling balance. For outright grunt and in a 4WD platform, I'd go with the R32 and turbo it.
