VR6 in EVO's 100 Greatest Drivers Cars

Latest EVO mag arrived today and they've done a top 100 Greatest Drivers Cars and the Corrado VR6 made it in at 98 :grin: :clap: (though with a pic of something non VR6 in nuggut flavour) given that its only just behind the likes of 355, E60 M5, Cerb and Vanquish S I'd say its a job well done.

Yeah, you have a point its always going to be subjective but interesting read all the same. Given its 'drivers cars' I guess its about the whole experience? e.g. how it goes and makes you feel too? In that I'd for one disagree that the Pug 306 Rallye (63) is in above the likes of Mcl F1 (71) and say the integrale (84).

 

Eitherway I'm pleased they had the sense to include the Corrado :clap: oh and what is EVOs obsession with Renaults (especially ones with :camp: stickers on) they seem to be a bit on their own with that one.

I've been in a Lotus 340R when Cambridge used to have a Lotus dealership in town...you look a FOOL getting out of it, as you have to put your hands on the road to help you out. Or maybe this was just me? :camp:

Yes, pleased the Corrado got in there - anywhere. I was just being provocative.

 

Just a list based purely on driving pleasure.

 

I raised eyebrows about Renault, too, but what do I know about sh!t off a shovel performance cars!

 

The car owning components of reliability/durability/practicality/economics don't come into this kind of list, but as you say, Storm Warning, they are usually interesting.

Well Evo, like a number of car magazines, depends on the motor manufacturers for advertising revenue. They are also dependant on a certain amount of co-operation and preferential treatment to get stories & scoops. No point in biting the hand that feeds.

Sorry guys but this a bit weak from a badge snobbery point of view. Renault have made, and will probably continue to make some good cars. I wouldn't personally own one because none of the range immediately appeals to me, but the Clio 172 / 182, etc and similar such cars get awesome reviews and always have. The new track focussed Megane R26.R at the time of launch was the fastet FWD car round the Nurburgring.. it might well still be. That seems a fairly decent accolade.

 

I think it's pretty weak to suggest that Evo would only ever consistently big up Renault simply because they receive advertising revenue from them. If Evo is purely about driving enjoyment, and not a measure on build quality / badge prestige / whatever then surely that's all that matters?

I'm sorry you feel that way. I think you're being a little naieve of how the industry works. I stopped taking Evo a couple of years ago simply because I became fed up with issue after issue containing fawning articles on both the Clio 182 and the BINI. It really did get boring as they just tried to find new ways to re-road test the same bloody cars over and over again. Evo's blinkered love affair with Porsche has been in full flow since the very first issue.

 

The photography in there is still the best in the industry but in my view both the quality or variety of the articles has deteriorated from the early years. But obviously that's only a personal opinion. I certainly got bored reading about the 182 every month,

I think you'll find their blinkered love affair with porshe is more or less down to porsche's ability to produce a brilliant sportscar, same applies to recent Renaults. It's not just Evo that rate the same cars, you'll find most of the magazines do, along with much of the public....

 

I'd have to agree with you, it all made for prettey dull reading if you're not into Renault or Porsche though, I stopped reading it regularly a few years ago for the very same reason, bit like the days of F1 and Schuey....

I've finally cancelled my subscription after getting every issue of Evo since the start... all down to the sameness of each issue - yet another new Porsche or Ferrari. I got bored of reading about endless cars I shall never be able to afford to own. I reckon Practical Performance Car is the replacement. Like John says though, I shall miss the photography.

I do like PPC, but, there's just not enough in there, and it's not in depth enough. I do buy it, but don't panic if I miss an issue. I do like the variety of vehicles in there, and the fact that they are open minded to different things. It's good to think outside this VW bubble....

 

I still like EVO a lot, and have a subscription, some of the photography is almost worth the price of the magazine IMO, and although I can read it all in a couple of hours, I'll often go back through the magazines and look at stuff over and over. I'll probably never own the cars they generally feature, but the ideas, and thought of owning them is enough. I liked this year's Grand Challenge. Whilst I wouldn't buy a soft top, the idea of spending £1000 and blatting across the country with some mates really appeals to me. :)

Tom, I agree with everything you say here. I too really enjoyed the Grand Challenge articles, and its that kind of thing that I wish they would do more of, but realise they must dedicate time and space to testing the cars many people aspire to owning. I also used to really like reading the Fast Fleet sections, particularly Simon George's experiences with his Lambos. Its just that I've got to the stage of not reading everyone cover to cover as I once used to. I've even fallen behind and have a couple of month's worth of magazines sitting waiting to be opened - a sign that I've fallen out of love with Evo, at least for the moment.

Seen this develop in my lifetime. A real manifestation of the information overload in modern life.

 

We used to have less money and material, but were able to relish and savour every favourite magazine or LP as it came out.

 

How my three and you guys manage to work and devote quality time to enjoy your interests looks to me impossible today.
