C memories which make me smile

Recommended Posts

Buying an old Midnight/Moonlight Blue shell and stripping for parts

Hiring circular saw and cutting shell up for the scrap metal man

Still have most of the bits from that shell, some in the back of the Plum (storage!! lol) and some in Prod's roof. Includes AC parts, full loom, lots of drivetrain, etc etc etc.

Feel free to throw up pics / stories of good times with your C. I know I need motivation quite often to press on!!

My Corrado moment was when I first sat in it and thought, it's mine, and smiled so wide the top of my head was going to fall off. I still do it, look back when I've parked it, and most annoyingly, never shur up about it.

I had been hankering after a Corrado for ages then went to my local VW specialist who's a bit of a trader too and saw a C sitting there, I had one of those "I properly really need and want that in my life" moments! I couldn't take my eyes off it - I know that sounds a touch sad. Anyway my old Mk1 Golf Cabby went up for sale the next day and 2 weeks later I picked it up and I will never ever forget the first drive in it to my now ex's house, a drive I had done countless times over the years in every car I have ever owned since passing my test. I couldn't stop grinning like a loon and booting it! The noise was plain sexual and having grunt in 5th gear was an utter novelty. The drive was a mix of dual carriage way then out in to the sticks - I could hit the corners faster than ever before, when I got to her street I didn't want to stop.

No car has had that same effect on me, I doubt any ever will, I've driven more capable, faster, tighter cars but none have made me fall in love with them like my old raddo did that first day!

One week later the thermostat housing cracked while I was out and that was just the begining! LOL

drove down to the folks house on Sat, car was really playing up.

lumpy/stuttering, creaking suspension, weird rattle noise in cabin :mad2:

Just felt like it was upset with me for not cleaning it in two weeks :confused4:

So have a natter with the old lad about maybe, sort've possibly, kind'a might, think of moving the car on for something a bit more modern, less thirsty. And what happens on the may home....

the cheeky little sh!t plays a blinder

rattle. gone

suspension creaking. gone.

lumpy rev range. gone - was like driving a new car was so smooth :thumbleft:

Couldn't help tapping the dashboard and smile'n, ''best behaviour now eh?!''

perhaps not memories as such, yesterday was joing the M1, beemer 6 series was up my back bumper for about half a mile until we joined, he thought he'd go straight to the outside lane to get past me and the car in front. I think this old M-reg banger put his nose out of joint as we both booted it as we joined and he just couldnt get past. Not even close! Good old VR6 engine. Still got an average of 30mpg on the trip despite sitting in a traffic jam for about 1 hour. Plus the water didnt go above 90C and oil about the same. Had the aircon and heating on too, so no misty windows either. Quite pleased, other than when the cabin fans totally stopped working for about 5 minutes - there's always one cloud :)

Wrong thread perhaps but yesterday in Tesco's car park a guy in a Blue RS4 Avant, that I was admiring (the car not him), comes over to comment on how 'tidy' my corrado looks........ridiculous - I would give my right arm for an RS4 !!

Funny how we seek respect from fellow motorists, even funnier when their own car is leaps and bounds better than yours.

EDIT : Back on topic - which will make me smile in years to come when I finally get the RS4.

I've been running around in Corrados for 13 years now so I have a few memorable stories to tell. Here's a few:

2000 : AmD

Back in 2000 we did a Corrado Rolling Road day at AmD's (then) new unit in Bicester. I'd been to the new site already and knew the way so I led the group in from Chieveley. Well I thought I knew the way... cue much hilarity as over a dozen Corrados forced to do a U-Turn down some dead end road in Bicester. Doh.

2008 : The Land Speed Record

Returned home to Bournemouth on Christmas Day night from my brother's place in Bletchley. 135 miles in, 1h 22mins. Do the math.

2004 : Drifting at Castle Combe

Rain started pouring in the middle of a trackday session at the Autometrix Track Day. Didn't think grip through Folly would be a problem, resulting in a rather magnificent, but unplanned four wheel drift through this fairly open corner at over 100mph. I have the incident on videotape. Kept the throttle pinned - if I hadn't we'd have been off in a big way.

2006 : Spanking Subarus

Returning from Le Mans with Butterfly as a passenger after a terrific Corrado group trip to the 24h du Mans. We were all pretty tired. On the outskirts of Bologne, some tosser in an Impreza races up behind me like he's filming getaway in Stockholm whilst we're on the exit ramp from the N138 and parks it a few feet off my rear bumper. We're only doing about 30mph. In a moment of irritation I just floor it around the long looping 270deg corner.

The Subaru takes off after me, and I watch in sheer delight as I watch him lose control and narrowly avoid putting his rallycar into a concrete wall on the outside of the corner. I must have forgotton to mention the Quaife diff and R888 tyres I was running on the car at the time. I don't think he ever worked out how we pulled away from him.

2004 : Vorsprung (not) Durch Technic

Location : Castle Combe Trackday again. Watching a guy in an Audi Sport Quattro who was chasing me stuff it into the barriers under braking at Quarry corner. Only the second lap of the session, I'd been first out in the queue and he was behind me. I was just trying to stay out of his way! I don't think he realised I run monster brakes... he tried to follow me flat out over the Avon Rise (on the lead to Quarry) and that's where he went wrong. Lot of damage to the Quattro. Shame.

2003 : Land Speed Record 2

V-maxxing my old car at 158mph with a GPS verifying the velocity. A considered and planned exercise, and a one off. In Germany of course.

2010 : The Scotland Trip

I've driven in Scotland many times as I have close friends there, but considered as a whole, the 9 day tour of Scotland that Wendy organised last Summer was truly memorable. I covered over 1,400 miles, we were driving every day on some of the country's most picturesque roads, with great mates, and met lots of top folks whilst we were up there too (you know who you are!). The day spent crossing the west coast lochs between Glasgow and Oban was particularly spectacular.

2005 : Le Mans donuts

First night on campsite at 2005 Le Mans. Everyone else had gone to bed and two of us remained awake trying to stay "hydrated". Must have been about 3am. Across the car park we suddenly heard a crowd cheering loudly and then car being properly revved against it's limiter for perhaps 30s-40s. When the engine stopped we noticed the cheering had stopped too.

Curious (and fairly drunk) we picked up out beers and pottered over to investigate. A scene of destruction cleared as the dust settled in an open area in front of the toilets/shower area. A brit had taken a bet that he could do a donut in a SL55 AMG and had actually scribed some beautiful circles. What he hadn't counted on was that the 1.8 ton car had dug it's tyres into the surface, and had shot hardcore in every direction for 30 yards. We counted at least 15 cars with broken windows and body damage, including a handful of Lotuses, a 911, the windows in the shower block and the driver's own Skyline GTR. The AMG didn't have a scratch on it!

Try getting a new windscreen for a grey import Skyline at Le Mans in June before you have to go home on Monday. I shouldn't laugh but it was pretty funny...
