richlyons 0 Posted November 28, 2010 was out with my frends last night, i was in my mates mk4 golf he came to a corner and went straight on in to a nice big ditch! No one was hurt and no windows went. He rang the aa to come get him out but they dont cover bad weather crashes! Hes gone back this morn to get a tractor to drag him out. Anyone else crashed or seen any?

bcstudent 0 Posted November 28, 2010 I crashed at the bottom of a hill in my Corrado in February 2004. We'd had some proper heavy snow and I was driving back to Norfolk from Peterborough. I managed 81 of the 99 mile journey without trouble and then SMASH! I only go out in my own car on snowy days if I absolutely have to now. I'm less concerned about risking the work van though. g60greeny 0 Posted November 28, 2010 took the 4 mo out last night an this morning,an it just feels so safe on the roads, think i sold the rado at the right time :)
Critical_Mass 10 Posted November 28, 2010 No fortunately not. Im very wary about taking the rado out in this weather, though dont have much choice mostly as its a daily. But its always in the back of my mind one even small bump could write the car off. :(

Jim 2 Posted November 28, 2010 I got nice big borbet 9s all round so mine feels pretty safe 8) You know wide tyres are worse in snow than narrow ones, right...?
Neokitz 0 Posted November 28, 2010 I got nice big borbet 9s all round so mine feels pretty safe 8) You know wide tyres are worse in snow than narrow ones, right...? Yes thats very true. A narrower tyre in winter gives better traction. although wider tyres give better grip in the summer as they put down a larger footprint of rubber in contact with the road, narrower tyres have more downward force (pounds per square inch) exherted on them thru the cars weight. the narrow tyres dig into the road surface better than summers.. wides just dont work in winter!! 8vMatt 1 Posted November 28, 2010 I slid my mk2 gti on black ice straight into a lamp post in Dec 08, 20 mins later a girl slid down the same bit of road. She managed to turn slightly at the last moment but unfortunately for me, directly at me! As I was stood on ice, I can't run anywhere and could only jump in the air to be collected on the bonnet :pale: My shoulder cracked the windscreen and she found some road to brake hard and stop. This sent me flying off the bonnet and I skidded down the road on my arse :help: She started to freak out and was screaming a lot! After dusting myself down I laughed afterwards that I even opened her door and asked if she was alright!!! :cuckoo: No damage to me but just a few bumps and bruises. craigowl 0 Posted November 29, 2010 In theory, there is no excuse for crashing in snow. Driving a car is a technical procedure carried out by humans deemed fit for driving a vehicle. Trouble is we are only deemed fit to drive after carrying out a brief test in, mostly, reasonably good weather conditions. I have been lucky enough to avoid crashing as a result of snow or ice, but mostly this is due to driving with great caution and vigilance. So-called macho men would probably say I drive like a "pussy". So be it - I dont want to get hurt, hurt anyone else or hurta da car, OK?!
pumbaa 0 Posted November 29, 2010 Drive down from norwich to london early this morning was fun. Borbet 9j's do not make for good winter wheels, no matter what rubber in stretched over them! It wasn't as bad as i'd thought, having to move off in 3rd and a few moment of praying for traction was all i really encountered. Though i haven't had a look at my 90mm splitter yet, there were some large chunks of snow along the A11 and i had to use it to plough the road when i first left this morning. wazza 0 Posted November 29, 2010 I wrote my old 911 off as a result of hitting a patch of black ice on a roundabout and then going head-on into a lamp post. Now I have the ultimate respect for weather and am happy to watch people fly past me as I now crawl around said roundabout whenever the weather is a bit iffy! I'm not looking forward to this winter's offerings, we pick up our new Ibiza in a couple of weeks, not the best time of year to buy a new car... Critical_Mass 10 Posted November 29, 2010 I ripped my 90mm splitter off last year due to the snow :( The 50mm hasnt had such a fate, yet. Driving to work today, mostly down side roads/country lanes wasnt too bad, just had to be careful and slow down using the gears. But I dont think i went faster then 25mph the whole way. Veearrhsix 0 Posted November 29, 2010 Not in the rado but in the daily (Focus). Twice - 1 last year, and 1 the year before that, at around the same time - were'nt "crashes" tho. 1st - driving at 5mph straight on - skidding on breaking (10ft-ish) then scraping into an Audi's side, knackering my track rod ends... 2nd - round a corner black ice at 8mph (coz I looked at speedo), car slid sideways into kerb knocking front suspension out of place... Got winter/snow tyres (Continental ones) & extra wheels ordered for this time round tho (nowt to brag about steel 14's) and a massive spade thing de-icer, and some arm bands coz they're high visibility - so we'll see if they'll all do the trick. I'm preparing for the worst ahem...
