Well if nothing else the engine sounds interesting... 2.0 FSI Turbo...

 

But doesnt change the fact that its a DAMNED expensive car...

Way overpriced in my opinion - VW trying to cash in on their brand image (a UK only thing), loads of cars out there for less money that are just as good. I have already spoken to my local dealer who laughed when I mentioned the ideal of a discount. Local Seat dealer will supply a brand new Leon Cupra R for £16.2k, no way is the Golf worth nearly 4k more, even takig healthy residuals into account

As some people on other forums have said, this pricing puts the new Golf practically into Audi territory. Quite frankly, given the choice i'd rather be driving round with an Audi if spending the same kind of money!

I'm a VW owner past and present but I certainly don't think any of the current range justifies a price premium over the competition. I've currently got an MG ZT-T from MG's Press Dept and that car knocks spots off the Golf V for general build quality. I put a thread on the GTi Club forum about the pricing of the Mk V Gti and all they did go on about what a fantastic car it will be, how VW's are a cut above the competition etc etc. Impreza WRX or for more money, a Golf GTi - no brainer if reliability and driving enjoyment are top priorities

How about a 2000/W plated TVR Tuscan with 11,000 miles and FSH at £26,000... now thats more like it!!!

 

Or a 2000/X plated Audi RS4 - 56,000 miles with full service history at £28,400... even more like it!!

 

I know they are 2nd hand cars but still kinda proves the point for me that the new Golf is just too much money.

Playing Devils Advocate here but...............

 

If you take it in 3 door (better re-sale). Standard 6 speed (you're still paying for new technology with DSG and you can't get it in 3 door) and keep the standard 17" alloys (18's will probably ruin the ride and handling). Stick with the pretty decent looking cloth interior (who REALLY needs leather? and you end up with a car at a similar price to the mk3 VR6 Golf when it was top of the Golf pile.

 

I think VW have pitched the new GTi at a similar level to the VR6 a few years back. The 8v and 16v Golfs were a good bit cheaper and todays cheaper sporty versions are the FSI models.

 

God! I hope that makes sense, it does in my head anyway :?

Sounds about right!!

So how come they're still in business then? Do they discount heavily? Or do people just fork out the dosh anyway? Coming to that bit - WHY do people fork out the dosh?

I like the MK5 GTi.

 

The Corrado was expensive but people still bought them.

 

Sure the Civic Type R and Cupra R are cheaper, but you get cheaper build quality and in the case of the Seat, lower tech suspension and drivetrain.

 

Having driven both of those popular hatches, I can honestly say they *feel* like 16K hot hatches. You get what you pay for.

 

I suspect the MK5 will most definitely be the BMW of hatches and that's what a *lot* of Golf fans are prepared to pay for.

 

I shall reserve my final judgement until I've test driven one :wink:

I think if I wanted to buy the BMW of hatches I'd place an order for just that - a 1 series or 3 series Compact. I don't think you necessarily get what you pay for nowadays, I think a lot of manufacturers are pricing according to perceived brand value as opposed to true quality / driving enjoyment, ie Vauxhall's VX220 is generally acknowledged to be at least as good as the Elise but the Elise is more expensive. I'm not knocking people who buy into these brands, I'm as guilty as anyone else, its just that we shouldn't automatically assume that paying more is going to get us more

I meant in terms of build quality with reference to the Golf being the BMW of hatches :roll:

 

History has proven that paying more gets you more. How many MK2 Golfs in great shape are around still compared to Escorts of the same era?

 

I just don't understand this negativity always shunted onto new VWs that are launched. You lot are like a knitting circle sometimes...."oooh have you seen the price of the new Golf?" "Oh yes, I remember when they were 2 n 6 down the market....now you don't nothing like what you used to, blah blah"

 

Why not reserve judgement until you've actually driven one?

 

Then and only then can *you* decide if you what you're paying for is worth the money.

Mmmm! Yes and no

 

VW have been overcharging for their cars for years but then so has the whole car industry (UK anyway).

 

GTi is a global brand recognised by most car enthusiasts as VW. People have been willing to pay a premium for this brand since the 70's even when the slow mk3 8v and mk4 non turbo GTi were trashed in the press as floaty boats.

Yes, there are cheaper alternatives out there but they don't have the history or the kudos that the GTi brand has; this, coupled with the fact that VW's image people cannot be seen to price their cars to compete with Honda, seat, Skoda etc, means that prices will be high.

 

Finally, judging by how many new A3's I see around Aberdeen the new GTi will sell like hot cakes.

I certainly think the new GTi will be a massive step forward in terms of driveability, certainly if the test reports of lesser models are anything to go by, I just hope they do a Peugeot "Rallye" type model that ditches some of the expensive standard equipment to produce a car that appeals to the true enthusiast and at a price that more people can afford. Ditch the electronic climate control, side airbags, electric mirrors, traction control etc, knock 3k off the price and I'd buy one

Wonder when the first 2.0fsi turbo will make it into a Corrado??

 

I think the car will sell well enough, a lot of fleet buyers will snap them up as they have a good residual, the mk4 was disliked to start with, well spose still is too some.

 

DSG on 5 doors only is a strange one though.

Tried the DSG on an A3 3.2 and wasn't convinced, entertaining at first but after a couple of hours I just stuck it in drive and left it to its own devices, definitely provided extra fun on backroads but don't know whether I'd give up my clutch pedal for it - maybe when I'm 40 :lol:
