  1. Lease deals are extremely compelling. I always swore I'd never do it either - couldn't get my head around paying money for X years and not owning the car at the end. But if you factor in that it's a new car and basically you're only paying the depreciation, they can be pretty awesome.

Deals like that Golf R one were crazy.

Maybe it's a time of life thing Jim, which is why it seems appealing.

    Consider this:

R32 bought for £7500 cash 18 months ago. £1500 in chains / clutch / DMF. Probably a further £2K in sorting niggles. £11K in total over 1.5 years. Plus fuel and servicing on top. And it's only 250hp, or thereabouts.

For the same money, I could have put down the 3 x £250, paid the 24 x £250 upfront, had £4250 left over for a luxury holiday in the Bahamas and sat back and enjoyed 300hp for 2 years!

Makes you think. 10 years ago I wouldn't have thought that way. "Turbo it" all the way. But now.....I can't seem to justify that anymore. Defo an age thing

  2. Hmmmm, damn you both! You're supposed to be discouraging me to save money

£230 p/m + £1400 down is awesome. I'll have to look into what deals are around at the moment.

Apparently the Leon R is supposed to be brilliant as well (same engine). There's an Autocar youtube clip of it vs the R, racing around a track, and the R couldn't lose it at all! Different story in the wet though, but it's a fair bit cheaper than the R. But it's a SEAT though.

Then there's also the M135i deals etc. Hmmmm, damn you both

Is insurance not included? Do you have to provide your own cover?

So for £230 you get the car and the servicing. Everything else is down to you. Is that right?

  3. I hear what you're saying mate. It's just frustratingly slow at times  Well, not slow, just not as quick as it ought to be.....but it's heavy I guess.

Thing is, I own the R32 outright, so was thinking of storing it at my parents and get one of these MK7s on PCP, but 2 years is a long time to be stuck with it if I don't like it, hmmmmmm.

  4. I've never ever considered a lease car before, it was only this specific deal that attracted me, which is why I was so p***d when VW pulled it - I'd done nothing wrong, smoeone somewhere did something dodgy, why should I suffer.

Neither have I as I don't like being in debt. Those lease deals were the deal of the century. All that car for £250 a month (the deals I saw at least) and only 3 months down! It's probably why the town where I live is littered with Golf Rs at the moment.

It's currently Evo magazine's (the only one I take seriously) hot hatch number one and a genuine 5 out of 5. They say the Megane RS or some such just pips it on raw driver focus, but come on, it's splitting hairs and who'd want that ugly french plastic POS in favour of the Golf?!? :D

Anyway, I was pondering..... if you take out a lease deal, what happens if:

Some runt keys / vandalises it?

You get bored and want to hand it back before your term is up?

You lose your job and have to give it back before your term is up?

And what about mods? With 350+hp just an OBD2 flash away, would they confiscate it from you if they found out? lol

Bloody ell, I think I've missed a trick here! Darn it.

  5. 5 door Golf = Wrong (that's what the Jetta is for)

4 tailpipes on a Golf = Too many

4 cylinders = Insufficient, but acceptable due to it being turboed.

Manual gearbox = Wrong. VAGs are all DSG optimised these days.

But otherwise, I like it, lol :D

Do you still get the over-run thud from the exhaust when you change gear with a manual R, is it just the DSG that does that?

  6. Cheers mate, appreciated. Thought it looked pretty good given I had to wash it in a field and started at 6.30am! First time using Poorboys black hole glaze and Nattys blue wax. Really impressed with the results on the day, just need to see how well it beads in the bad weather.

That's interesting because this weekend was my first trial of Richkids Intergalactic Orange rub and Cindy's tortoise shell lemon wick glaze. Impressed, I was.

  7. The london yutes stopped using peng about 6 months ago.. We're onto 'Piff' now..

Human beings in the South East of England are devolving back to single cell organisms again. The sooner they crawl back into the sea, the better.

  8. Nope, the A3 BDB ECU doesn't have an analogue tacho, only the MK4 BFH ECU does. You'll need an rpm converter to hook onto a coil signal wire. Stealth Racing sell them for about £80ish IIRC. I just jumped mine onto coil 1, but traced the wire back to the ECU plug rather than messily splicing in at the coil end.

    Congrats !

  9. The side profile is remarkably Corradoish. Who knows, maybe they'll bin the UR Quattro concept and relaunch it as the new Corrado instead, but I doubt it!

The Corrado is like a thorn in VW's side. They're really couldn't care less about it.

  10. Just over worked motors imo. As I say, what ever overload mechanism is employed to protect the motor is pretty crap because the cast metal parts snap before the motor stops! The central locking syncing sets the basic stop / start timing, but it's supposed to shut the motor off when the load gets too high. Well, it does, but a little late imo. The same thing happens to the spoiler motor and some folk have seen smoke coming from theirs!

Anyway, not trying to knock your work. Well done for finding yet another cause for why these rubbish roofs stop working!

  11. I would suggest the brushes are burning out due the motor struggling to over come the resistance of the mechanism. I've stripped many of these down over the years and they are all ridiculously stiff and is why the water plate guide snaps on them. Add to that the pressure of wind resistance at 100mph if you close it, the motor leads a very hard life. Another Rockwell International piece of crap.

The motor doesn't appear to have a particularly effective thermal fuse like the windows do.

The only thing that seemed to solve the roof issue permanently for me was to strip it right down, replace both water plate guides and cable assmeblies and make sure it was liberally greased up with a sliding mechanism specific silicon grease. Don't use normal grease or white grease. These just seem to attract grit and accelerate wear.

  12. the amount of rust coming from the expansion tank in one of your pics isn't a good sign, corrosion is a killer!!

It's a sign of neglect is what it is! There should be zero rust in a well maintained coolant system because coolant additive inhibits it, so guess what that engine has probably never seen much of during it's life?

  13. Have to agree there Kev I read in the paper today Orlando Bloom took a swing at him outside a restaurant in Ibiza after he taunted him about his ex wife Beiber and his crew got papped oot and when Orlando went inside other celeb's that were there applauded and Di caprio high fived him. Apparently even other celeb's don't like him

The only people who like Bieber is his teenage girl fanbase. Apparently he was spitting on them from his hotel balcony and they lapped it up. All I can say is these girls must be utterly brain dead morons with very low standards if they idolise that pr1ck.

Still, teenage girls throwing their knickers at pop stars and rock legends doing stupid things to get press attention is nothing new :D

I've always maintained that to be a performing artist you have to be a bit mentally unstable, such as Bipolar for instance. i.e. very creative and talented during their high, but driving Rolls Royces into swimming pools, beating up paparazzi and OD'ing on drugs on their downer. History has shown that the most talented of people were very messed up individuals indeed!! These people are, by and large, egotistical maniacs who crave attention, and when they don't get it, they make their own headlines. To them, being out of the limelight means they are worthless failures. It's all just insecurity at the end of the day, but as exceptionally well paid people with huge fanbases, they really need to get over themselves and behave properly in public.

  14. TBH I have zero time for any of these millionaire pricks. Footballers, gobby ex Big Brother slappers, attention seeking Hollywood f'cks, attention seeking prime time TV f'cks (like that Piers Morgan f'ck), but Bieber really stands head and shoulders above all of them for overall mega f'ckness.

Few people seem to have a natural talent and be modest about it these days. It's all about Beyoncé wobbling her massive arse around and doing the Diva turkey neck, Miley Cyrus wobbling her arse around, Piers Morgan coming out with flippant sh't and trying to make his guests cry and Bieber with his attention whoring because he's a silly little insecure f'ck.

Yep, the world is slowly turning to schitt.

  15. Haha, good luck with that. The guy you want to speak to is Matt at UM UK but as you've discovered, it ain't easy!

However, I feel duty bound to recommend you swerve that path and go to Stealth Racing instead as the mapping is better and they're easier to get hold of in case of after sales running issues.

  16. Dinner Date is quality :D

I just like watching the uncomfortable silences and horse schitt excuses they give for not liking each other. You've got to have a bit of metrosexualness about you these days or birds aren't interested :D
