  1. The ISV on my VR looks partially open when looked at removed. It has in fact gone over closed and the gap you see is the 'wrong side' of the shutter. If you try and open it with a screwdriver it needs opening the opposite way. I assume when energised it moves to its proper closed state as required. The screw is set at factory so I would leave alone.

  2. Try cleaning the connector on the filter housing. The sent signal is very prone to disturbance from corrosion. In English that means it doesn't like being covered in crud! On a pedantic note, the mocal thermostats are open when cold and close off when they get heated with oil.

  3. Hi Si, from the stealers. £40 for both. My car is just after a part No change and I was lucky to get the correct ones. Talk on here about having to heat up the metal sleeve to get them out. Mine just pulled out easily, only 3/4 inch of the outer goes into the guide. The clips on the swing arm can be reused if you are careful in getting them off the two screw studs.

  4. Simple answer to self shortening handbrake cable is 'self lengthening cable conduit'

Outer sleeve had perished allowing the coils to corrode thus expanding down it's length.

Oh, and I would like to nominate Handbrake cables as the easiest change job on the C. Must be a design flaw ;)

  5. Yup, Balancer plate in my words is the adjuster thingy up front. With the caliper levers on the stop one cable end is a good 3/4 inch longer inside the car. I did notice a slight variation a few years ago when adjusting but was able to get away with it then. Not now though. It's odd that it's too short. Any wear in cable linings would explain an increase in length to some extent. They seem to move in and out freely. Poss time for replacements. Thanks

  6. Doing rear discs today and when it came to reattaching the ends of the cables to the calipers the offside one wouldn't pull out enough to get on. Looking at the adjusters the nearside cable was normal length but the offside one was dissapearing into the guide tube. It's now so too short I've had to use the locknut first, then use the coned nut as the locker! I've heard of cables stretching but not this!! Are the left and right cables the same length? It's not that the other one has stretched as the balancer plate sits correctly. Ideas?!

  7. Have you changed the relays up in front of the glovebox? Or just checked them with an AVO? I have had various relays which 'checked out' but were proved faulty by new ones. It is an expense but takes one thing out of the failure loop. The UK VRs had Teaves 4 systems I think which are nothing like the picture you have up. Good luck in sorting this!!

  8. I would be looking at the ABS Relays and associated fuses found up just in front of the glove box. A swine to get to without removing the box but can be done. Real shame vag-com won't talk to the ecu. You mention that the ABS wasn't working anyway so I assume the light was already on while you were playing in the snow?

  9. That's bad luck and I regret to say the Council will indeed try and wriggle out of compensation on the grounds that they cannot know about every pothole. If it had been reported already then they are liable. Thats the line they used on me.
