  1. You got a great deal there mate. Seeing that history would have been a massive plus, unfortunately you weren't to know that there was a reason for so much engine internal work and it still wasn't right. You've certainly ensured it's right now though. It was lucky you took it on and didn't end up as a breaker, though it's cost you an eye watering amount with all the WVMS parts you've fitted. Can't underestimate how special it is now though so hats off to you. 👍

  2. Nice find chap. I'm sure with hoses, there are a few throughout the VAG market that would be suitable for different purposes - it's just ensuring the inner diameter is the same. There are some odd ones though! I've a few VR6 old spares coming up for sale in the next couple of days if you need any. 👍

If you just start it up Vince will tell you if it needs a rebuild by just sniffing the exhaust gasses/ oil smell  lol. Im not kidding.

Mine was burning oil you could smell it- took the engine apart and had two slightly bent valves- good way to test this id put the valve end in a drill and spin it and you will see , also slight ovulation of a cylinder- i think the bent valves were caused by timing out from last owner as he got the chains done after the car had issues- mechanics initial report timing miles out- strangely enough my car also had a rebuild at about 60 k by a seat dealers- block now on third re build- I wouldnt say its as bullet proof engine as say an 8V that's for sure.

sounds like your car just hasn't had the best of pasts mate. I think they're very good engines if kept well maintained. No engine is bullet proof if poorly looked after. That includes regular oil and filter changes and not ragging it to death from cold, but also ensuring the cooling system works correctly. The fact that the valves were bent was down to human error or chain failure, which is the only weak point in that there was no specified service interval on chains and tensioner. Wear is pretty obvious when they become noisy though, so flat out failure is also quite rare. Bore ovalisation is also very rare and only becomes apparent well North of 150k. I can count on one hand the reports I've heard of it happening (not to say there aren't more I haven't admittedly), but it's still a rare occurrence. Lots of people talking about it puts the frighteners up everyone, when the reality is it's not very common at all.

  4. I think he pulled it from auction as it was just as the pandemic hit. Auction house agreed to end it due to the circumstances. I've not seen any hint of it since, so either sold privately or waiting on a good point in time to put it back up. £35k was the estimate iirc.

Done really well there mate hats off to you - have you thought about any other cars  or just going to leave it this year.

Thanks mate. Probably leaving it this year. Have a really busy next 6 months with a new job, work on the house, my son's karting, and big holiday etc.. so don't have the time to start another car for now.

  6. Indeed. I think I about broke even with with purchase price and what I've spent over the years though so it's a win really. Bear in mind if I'd have taken up playing golf, 10 years down the line I'm pretty sure I'd be heavily out of pocket!

  7. Definitely worth replacing the bias valve. You may get away with it and the pipe may come out ok, but you can bet it'll fail in a few years. This is the kind of thing that will cost too much to remanufacture so parts will dry up. Definitely worth getting one while you can in my opinion. If you want to have a go at making them yourself, use Kunifer. Not much more expensive than copper, but much harder so won't fold as easily when bent or become damaged and restrict flow with the slightest knock. I believe copper brake pipe is illegal in many countries....  I'd recommend stainless fittings as well, so they'll last forever. 👍

  8. Seems like a lot of people are punching out. There have been some really strong cars for sale recently with a few more just coming to market.

I know prices are sky high for newer used car and there's got to be a point where they crash, but what are people's thoughts on classics/modern classics like the Corrado.... Is this the same as newer used cars, or do you think prices will remain high?

I would have thought that the market for classics has gotten smaller with cost of living & fuel sky rocketing. Add in ULEZ being implemented into wider areas around major Cities and the push for electric vehicles, then surely prices of classics will go the same way?

In addition to my reasons for selling, I'm thinking I probably got out at the right time....

Must have been a hard day, I feel your pain. I still think from what I've read from you that you made the right decision and I hope you feel the same. Cheers JF

It really was JF, but a couple of days to settle the mind has reaffirmed that it was the right thing to do. I'd like a modified one next time (I'm sure there will be a next time but not in the near future), With solid but not perfect bodywork. Something I'm comfortable leaving outside and enjoying in all weathers. 👍

Thanks for the advice. I'll mention it to Jabbasport when they take it to do the charger service and all belts etc.

I was cleaning under the bonnet today as I was bored and still itching to drive the thing and noticed the earth strap/bonding strip loose on the left hand side that is attached to the wing. Not sure if that will be helping things but also not sure where the broken end should have gone?

It should be attached from the wing to the bonnet bracket, but very unlikely to cause any issues if broken. They were surprisingly expensive when I last looked (about £30). I just got a braided earth strap from eBay for a couple of quid and put some heat shrink over it for a perfect replacement. 👍

  11. Thanks guys, I'll still be a regular on here and on the Facebook groups so keeping my toe in so to speak.

I keep tormenting myself by going into an empty garage.... Still, pretty confident the new owner will look after it so it should be in good hands.

Maybe in time I'll take on another project car, but I've got enough to concentrate on for now.

Thanks again for stopping by Neil, new owner seemed chuffed and all positive calls so far!

  12. Sorry to see this mate, there are some absolute choppers about regardless of where it sold unfortunately. I sold an ABS light on eBay a few years ago. It was repaired by me as the solder had failed on a couple of pins. I re-soldered, tested and put on eBay for about £25 posted iirc. The buyer reported that it didn't work so returned it, and on opening it back up it was clearly not the one I sent him as the solder hadn't been touched and the lamp had failed. I put this to eBay but they said I had no photographic or video evidence to prove this. For the sake of £25 I couldn't believe someone would even bother trying to rip someone else off for a free part. Absolute jobs worth!
