onlyG60ing 0 Posted August 24, 2003 Yesterday I was drag racing with some freinds I smoked a couple bmw 320's,and a maxima, but when I raced with a Mercedes E320 , I think it was 1993-or 1994 not sure!? he beat me, I am still trying to get accustomed to my corrado, I can only feel it boost on the second gear till the forth.but yesterday when i was racing I was on my fifth gear And reached 185~190 kmh and it felt like this is the top speed of the car . and I know that it can go faster. the only thing I am missingin my car is an intercooler, which I plan to install tomorow , since yesterday I am planning to spend a grand$ in mods in the car any suggestions, and can you post the cars you drag raced with and SMOKED with your corrado g60.did any one race with a merc. e320. vr6storm 0 Posted August 24, 2003 what you have to remember too is that merc E320's are putting out about 220bhp in standard trim and of course oodles of torque, and also the majority of them will be slush-boxes so their in-gear acceleration can be quite devastating even considering the fairly hefty kerbweight that they carry........though i would have thought you should have had the edge on a standing start then again considering your engine probably is not as efficient as it should be(no intercooler etc) and also the 93> E320's performance figures are Mercedes E320 auto....autocar road-test 30/06/93 top speed...................142mph 0-60...........................7.0 secs 30-70(kickdown).........6.5 secs 50-70(kickdown).........3.9secs(to give you an idea...thats 0.2 secs slower than a Mclaren F1    )
mambomonkey 0 Posted August 24, 2003 You know what they say, - there's no substitute for litres. Having said that, i did whoop a boxter on a duel carriageway the other day. - We both went off fairly rapidly in 1st and 2nd then he's decided to try and get rid of me in 3rd. As it hit 13psi my 1980's hatchback did me proud and saw the porka back into my rearview mirror. I know they're not that quick, but i just tell people i raped a porsche!
steveo29 0 Posted August 24, 2003 are boxters really that slow?...id never have dared race one
mambomonkey 0 Posted August 24, 2003 I think they are listed as being a fraction under 7 seconds to sixty, but as we know, the gearbox on a G60 prohibits it from ever doing any really impressive 0-60's. However, drop down a gear with a decent chip and pulley on your side and i think you'd be surprised on how well the midrange compares...

If you don't have an intercooler fitted, you will be well down on power. Fit the biggest front mounted intercooler you can get with unrestricted pipework. You won't have anymore hassle from E320's. Despite the performance figures quoted for the E320 - they are not that quick. They handle like barges, a design fault means that they have several flat-spots through the rev range and I wouldn't get one if it was free !! The ONLY advantage of the E320 is the superb 5-speed auto transmission. This transmission changes it's own shift pattern, depending on how it's being driven !! Jim 2 Posted August 25, 2003 And that Mercedes 3.2 litre V6 is sweet.. a friend of mine has a nice CLK320 which can certainly cover ground at a surprising rate despite the size and weight of it. Though as you said, the suspension on the cars can be entertaining as its designed to be a cruiser, not a racer.. the thing does wallow a bit and the traction control has a fit if you put your foot down going into corners.. so whilst it has the edge on the straights, you'll leave it behind on corners with very little effort. stevemac 0 Posted August 25, 2003 You're right Jim, V6 3.2 aluminum alloy Merc engine is much lighter & more powerful than the older straight-6 3.2 cast iron lump that "onlyG60ing" would have been racing against.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 25, 2003 are boxters really that slow?...id never have dared race one The 2.5 version is not particularly fast but the newer 2.7 and the 3.2 Boxter S are much quicker. The Boxter never has been about straight line performance, that's what Porsche have the 911 for, but more for sublime handling, build quality and value (for a Porsche). G60 0 Posted August 25, 2003 the only thing I am missingin my car is an intercooler if you're pushing your car that hard without an intercooler.. and repeatedly over several runs getting everything real nice and hot.. i'm surprised you didn't blow apart your engine or else the ECU is pulling out some seriously timing. does the car feel like its pulling out power at higher rpms? ..or do you mean you have the stock IC in there still and are waiting on a big one?
Storm 0 Posted August 25, 2003 You'll nail a boxster 2.5 and possibly a 2.7. A 3.2 will eat your breakfast. I've got a VR6 and a Boxster s3.2. Boxster is awesome. :D
onlyG60ing 0 Posted August 25, 2003 does the car feel like its pulling out power at higher rpms? I currently dont have any intercooler in my car, I was planning to install a large front mounted one, but I could'nt find anyone who sells the intercooler along with the aluminuim pipes.you see, I live in Lebanon and there arent a lot of corrado's here, The best thing I could find was the stock intercooler, and now I really dont know what to do, should I settle for the stock IC or get a bigger one. could any one tell me the difference between the large IC-and the stock one? and if any one knows where I can order a large IC-along with the Alum.Pipes from abroad(with reasnoble price). who also can ship to lebanon I would be greatful. Best thing to do is what I'm currently doing :- Get a suitable intercooler core (mine's from a Merc C-class). Have some aluminum header tanks custom made & welded to the core. Have some aluminum alloy pipework custom bent to shape by a local engineering company & get hold of some Samco hoses to join it all together. You WILL notice a substantial increase in power if you use a system like this as opposed to no intercooler at all. Maybe a month or two before I have mine completed. I will be posting pictures, dimensions & instructions when I'm finished.
Chris VR6nos 0 Posted August 27, 2003 My mate had a 320 Merc and it could out accelerate my VR6 which had an above average VR performance, so i fitted a Vortech supercharger and nitrous. Nuff said! Why do people buy those little 1.8L 8v G60s when there are lots or VRs about for sale, then they can have a propper car! :-D Chris
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 29, 2003 Why do people buy those little 1.8L 8v G60s when there are lots or VRs about for sale, then they can have a propper car! :-D Chris Because the G60 is a good engine. Too true regarding the VR availability, 5 pages of them on Autotrader, prices rangine from £2,500 for K reg to £9000 for a Storm. Average price for a L/M reg is £4K. stevemac 0 Posted August 29, 2003 Why do people buy those little 1.8L 8v G60s when there are lots or VRs about for sale, then they can have a propper car! :-D I suppose that would depend on your idea of a "proper car". Porsche 911 turbo, AC Cobra (427 cubic inch model with twin Paxton superchargers), DE-Thomaso Pantera, all spring to mind. I bought my G60 because I enjoy fooling around with cars. The G60 engine is very tunable and this is why I bought it. I could quite easily have bought a VR6 (or a Porsche 911 Turbo, for that matter) but I chose not to. My choice was in no way financially influenced, I've spent 7k on it since easter when I bought it and plan to spend about another 2k. I do actually like my Corrado and plan to keep it for a few years. BTW I'm currently looking to buy a Triumph TR6 or maybe a Stag to restore/tune - so if any of you have one, send me an email. Andy91 0 Posted August 30, 2003 Why do people buy those little 1.8L 8v G60s when there are lots or VRs about for sale, then they can have a propper car! ...wish i could get a VR6, if it meant saving upto 3k+ i think i would push my self for it, cut back on everything for a year or so....BUT im a 21 yr old student, small jobs and no NCD :? i think trying to insure a 1.8 16v is going to be a challenge! (bearing insurance is every year not just a one off) But trust me one day !!!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 30, 2003 Focus on your studies mate, get a good job and then get any car you want. The VR is not insurance friendly. You need a good few years bonus and age under your belt before it becomes viable. Kev
Beetlebug_2001 0 Posted August 31, 2003 Yeah i just got a corrado 1.8 16v, couldnt really afford a vr6 but even if i could id still opt for the 1.8 16v as its the most insurance friendly of the range still paying a lot though 112 pound a month for 12 months (20yr old, printer), was thinking of getting the head reconditioned as ive heard it needs doin after 100k, and mines done 120k, runs sweet as a nut but like to make sure that engines gonna hold together when my right foot suddenly gets heavier, what kinda prices am i looking at for it to be reconditioned? where can i get it done? how long will the head be away for? and finally has anyone opted to have some magic worked on there head to make there C faster? So i'll prob be posting after one in a month or two, when i get my moneys together and pass plus done, (not just for insurance) so watch this space! ..well not this particular one Andy
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted September 4, 2003 £1300 for the G60? Blimey! I pay £550 comp for my VR6 through Axa. That's one benefit of being 30 I guess! Kev

Henny 0 Posted September 4, 2003 Mine's currently (until November) £1600 fully comp. 34 yrs old & 9 points Oooooh, that smarts.... I'm paying £850 at the moment for my G60 with upto 250BHP, body/suspension/wheel mods and no milage limits AND my golf 1600 Driver (which is limited milage?!? :? ).... I've no points (god knows how, but I LUURRRVVVEEE my radar detectors!) and 5 years NCB with a total write off costing 6K just over 3 years ago... I'm a 27 year old Broadcast (radio) engineer which always bumps the premium up 'cos they assume that I'm going to have famous people in the car (which I sometimes do, but I'm not telling them that... Noddy Holder reckons my G60 is "Scarey, mental fun!" ) When you next insure your C, make sure you mention that you read "the golf", "PVW" and any other VW mag you can think of, Join CCGB, club GTI, VWOCGB etc, etc, etc and make sure you've pointed out which shows you've been to within the last year.... It knocked over 25% off what I was quoted when I mentioned that lot, and, apparently, I've got "just about" every discount going now!!! 8) If they don't discount for that lot, tell 'em to go and jump and have a word with HIC, FLUX, Greenlight etc etc etc who specialise in this kind of car... 8)
