Standard speedline alloys, referb or buy 17s?

Recommended Posts

My tyres go down, every two weeks i have to pump them up. I have had them checked for punches and havent got any nails or anything, even had one of the tyres off and i wire-brushed and cleaned the inside of the alloy myself it still goes down.

So for xmas my parents have said they'd give me £100 toward getting them re-frubed, sand blasted, and looking like new.

Should i do this or save and buy some 17's?

I cant afford to lower my car so maybe it'd look silly with 17s and never lowered?

Anyone got any ideas?

I'd have to say the same. I've thought long and hard lately about wheels, in that my speedies also need a refurb, they're all beginning to show discolouration, blistering and have kerbing etc.

I love the alloys which are on NickVR6's supercharged beaut, but I often think the same, that putting on aftermarkets without lowering would look odd.

Bottom line for me is that I've never been one for mods particularly. I think there are so many truly awesome looking mods on this forum, some gorgeous cars, but the problem for me is that once you make one mod, you're pretty much obliged to make others to fit with it and I've always loved keeping things standard.

In that respect I'm bang alongside the idea of keeping the speedies: those people saying they're the best standard wheel ever are bang on with me.

The only thing that I do think long and hard about is lowering it by just a little at the rear. I think the standard ride does just make it a tiny little bit too much like she's sticking her arse up, and lowered rides at the back look more natural.

But then my point stands; once doing that, the temptation has to be change the wheels to make them look less dwarfed under dropped arches and we're away down that road.

The only other thing I've ever thought about is all red rear clusters, but then I'm not sure that looks right on a classic green 'rado.

And the bottom line is that I love it being totally standard. I know all these kinds of mods could be reversed, but I like the idea of it being totally standard for the future.

Plus all the money I'd spend on this kind of shit would be better off stuck in a maintenance fund for when something next goes wrong!

My tyres always go down when I've got the speedlines on as well. Even with new tyres etc. I think they must become porous over the years?

All my tyres were also loosing pressure at various rates... So had all mine refurbished for about £40 each, not had to pump them up since!!

Just had my Speedlines refurbed by Pristine as they leaked all the time. One of them needed a repair on the edge of the rim too but total was £214 inc VAT. http://www.pristinealloywheels.co.uk/

They look stunning, just like brand new wheels, shame my motor's still in bits. :(

Just read your post Neil and noticed you're in Sheff. There's a Pristine agent there somewhere as they organise the shipping for you too. I took mine to a place in Donny.

When i bought my Corrado, it had some horrible 17s on that rubbed the arches. I picked up some ratty speedlines dirt cheap and had them refurbed by Spit and Polish.

They collect from most garages around the country. Cost me £50 a wheel (plus 4 new tyres  ), though I think they pay the garages wedge to take the tyres off, meaning if you know a mate in the trade you might get them done cheaper.

At first I wasn't sure if I should've just got some aftermarkets, but they came back looking like new, bloody lovely. They make the car handle much, much better too. Only trouble is, now I have to keep 'em really clean!

I heard about Metal Magic too but I knew Pristine did a good job and at the end of the day I went with what I knew!

The place I went to was Tyre Torque in Kirk Sandall. If you call Pristine they'll tell you the closest agent, they will also ship a set of loan rims there too if you need your tyres transplanting onto something to keep you on the road. I didn't use that as my car is on axle stands in the garage, I also didn't have to pay for tyre stripping and fitting as i do it myself, so budget for a few more quid there.

I have no pics from before, believe me they were not pretty wheels though, the worst bits were the back of the wheels and the wells where the tyre beads sit. They are now however like new:
