Parents want me to sell

My parents keep attempting to convince me to sell the rado. Its a tornado red 1990 1.8 16v. It cost me £1800, and ive spent over £2000 on it in the 14 months ive owned it. But for this money its had the front wing and roof dent repaired, the engine has been fully rebuilt, and the entire brake system has been replaced.

 

The latest thing to go was the oil pump, which cost £150 to sort. Since then they keep telling me to sell it and buy a 'normal' car. My mum keeps telling me about people that are selling their 1.4 Fiestas etc and keeps telling them im interested, when im clearly not.

 

They dont seem to understand that the more i replace the less things can go wrong. The engine is SOLID, the whole braking system is brand new, ive had new front seats in and replaced various trim too. The only thing that needs sorting is the paintwork. I've told them that the only way i would sell it would be to buy a G60/VR6. And when ive sold it (would get around £1500) and then spent a futher £3.5k towards a decent VR6 i'd rather turbo the existing lump, IF i wanted the extra power a vr6 would offer.

 

Essentially, why dont they understand that you cannot possibly sell your corrado to replace it with a 'normal' car?!?!?!

Well I can understand your arguments, but it might be a bad thing to mention turbocharging if you're in the middle of a slanging match over how much money you're spending on it.

True. The point i was trying to make to them was that i would only sell it to get a VR6, but the money i'd need to buy a decent one i could spent on whacking a turbo on the one ive got, considering its only done 2k since the rebuild it would be the perfect time to do it. I wont be, but still.

 

Its not the money that bothers them i think, its the fact that there is always something wrong, even if its a small niggle.

you can easily get a "normal" lemon that costs you £500+ in bits every year for 3/4 years but as you say you're well past that now with yours, PLUS there is a plentiful supply of cheap spares on here that you wont necessarily get with other cars. :) logic says you have to keep it :D

Hmmm kinda reminds me of when i bought mine 8 years ago, was still at home at 28 years old and had 10k in the bank.

 

I should have done the sensible thing and got on the property ladder which was a long time before they shot up by the way.

But instead i spent £18'000 on a 3 year old VW from a main dealers :roll:

 

To say dad hit the roof was an understatement, mum was in tears and it was as if i had committed a major crime. We didn't talk for almost a week which is quite hard when you're living with them. things improved a little when i started to come home with a trophy or two from doing concours competitions at VW shows. As if they had a little respect for the lump of metal as they called it,

 

I missed the boat regarding the property ladder which in hind sight was very stupid as i couldn't afford the car and a mortgage.

 

I now rent a place and my folks have totally accepted the fact that i like this stupid hobby and we get on as a family should, but its taken some time for them to understand this.

 

And if i had sold it when they wanted me to i would never have met judith (Butterfly) we have been together over 2 years now and she recently moved in with me too, My folks think she's come down from venus or something and reckon I''m very lucky.

 

So they're glad i didn't sell it really.

 

All i can add is that parents really only want whats best for their children but in the same breath thay dont have a clue what this car thing is all about, we are what we are no matter what Corrado you own.

 

Tough it out fella and they'll quit nagging you soon.

I'd have supported my daughter buying the pearl blue valver she was hanging her nose over until she realised the insurance would cost her about three times as much again, she's 17 and ended up with her second choice of a Ka? Thebiggest pressure we faced was from one of my wife's friends who could not believe we were spending £13.5K on the VR when we still lived in a middle terrace when she drove a Rover 200 but lived on the new estate, of course she dislikes the fact even more now since I got made redundant, started contracting and bought a better house than they have!

 

At the end of the day a Corrado is still a car, they may cost slightly more than something else of a similar age (although the difference is a lot less than it used to be) but cost no less to run, anything on any car can break and since you've spent a fair bit on the stuff that has broken you can feel pretty secure in the fact it'll not fail again in a long time. And then there's always going to be the feel good factor you get whenever you spot it parked up next to a load of boring cloned "sensible" familly cars at Tescos. Keep the C, enjoy it and feel proud you're keeping another one on the road :)

You know, my parents were totally against me having a corrado as a first car, mainly due to insurance. Though I was earning quite a bit then, even though insurance was big, I could easily afford it.

Thankfully my old man had a love for cars in his youth (and still does) so he understood and continues to understand why I hang onto a car that probably costs more to run per year than a brand new Audi.

 

Even my girlfriend accepts it and even talks me into keeping the damn thing when its getting me down and I want rid of it. Very strange :)

Even though I Have a mortgage and am getting married next year, my folks still nag me about the C, especially when my mum found out I'd bought something to make it even faster than it already is :D

 

Luckily my dad loves it and has even asked to borrow it for the odd weekend drive 8) And strangley my girlfriend now loves it too and pursuaded me out of selling it :lol:

 

Tell them to stick their boring cars up their bums or let them borrow it so they know what the fuss is all about :lol:

i can sympathize with you buddy. my mum cant stand my rado and says that i should set fire to it, pleasent eh. however my dad is keen as mustard when it comes to fixing it and travelling all over to get parts etc..... its been on the rents driveway for almost 8 months now and its slowly getting close to being back on the road. mum cant stand it, dad loves it (however he thinks i should put it back to being completely standard)

 

as said before, your money your car... keep it, i know il be keeping mine for many years to come..

I've just pulled out my receipts folder to do some maths to see what this car has cost me.

 

Now, ive owned it for 18months, and it has cost me on average £120 a month in repairs. HOWEVER, this is where i destroyed my mums argument. Its cost me £2200 to fix in the past 18months, BUT its got a rebuilt engine, entire braking system, and various other bits replaced, PLUS, it hasn't decreased in value. I could still sell it for the £1800 i paid for it. Now on the other hand, my mum has a ford focus. Now according to autotrader her car has decreased in value by £3k in the 18 months she has had it.

 

So to reflect. If my mum and me both sold our cars now, she would have lost more money than me. Despite her having a newer 'normal' car. So basically, it is cheaper for me to 'throw' money at the rado, than it is to buy a new normal car and suffer from depreciation. When i showed her the maths behind this her argument just fell over and she agreed with me

hehehehe thats the same argument that lets me spend as much as i want on my old bus :) what shut them up competely was when brentacre beat all the "normal" insurance quotes I got but with all the mods declared. To think i almost blew £5k on a mk4 golf before i found the B3 GT. Havent spent anywhere near that on the old girl, buts its had new shocks+springs, alloys+tyres, new bushes, new discs, pads +bearings all round, complete new interior, leather steering wheel etc and from driving my dads octavia (same platform as the golf) handles better too!

 

Plus the amount of knowledge ive gained over the last 18 months from mending stuff myself = priceless 8)

The ONLY reason I sold the Corrado in favour of a Seat Leon was that it was too cheap too turn down. The extra power is fun though; if I'd have spent the same money on the Corrado I'd have gained about 20bhp.

if i had some cash saved away,i would sell mine an buy summat newer,but for what i'd get for the rado alone wouldn't be enough to get summat that gives as much joy drivin as the rado does
