Anyone have the part no's for timing chains and tensioners?

This is the list I used from the Wiki I think, not sure its available yet. I also have a copy of the guide if you want. Price's are not correct but they aren't a million miles off.

 

TIMING CHAINS

(lower chain)

1 x lower timing chain - simplex 021 109 465B £30.26

1 x lower timing chain tensioner 021 109 467 £21.17

2 x bolts, lower timing chain tensioner N905 350 01 £0.14

1 x lower timing chain guide rail 021 109 469 £2.93

1 x lower pin 021 109 471 £1.38

 

(upper chain)

1 x upper timing chain - duplex 021 109 503A £60.98

1 x upper pin 021 109 511 £9.08

1 x Bolt, tensioner for Golf Mk4 top pad 021 109 507B £23.81

If your gearbox is coming off....

 

I'd say defo do the chains! Most VRs are certainly coming up to the point where they could do with a check.

However, you're in a good position to actually have a physical check over them and see what's what. If the car is going to be off the road for a week or so, could always wait, inspect and then do it if need be.

 

What's your mileage?

Well that's the thing car has 'only' done 84k and feels pretty tight. Certainly not very noisy.

 

But then I thought I may as well get my local guy to do the chains whilst he is fitting a clutch. Then when I take car to Stealth after that to get the 263 cams and VSR fitted get new tappets then.

 

Do I need new valve stem as well? They arent the same as tappets are they??? :confused4: LOL

I'd imagine unlikely?!

Never heard of anyone replacing a flywheel.. other than to get a lightened version.

 

Please correct me if I'm wrong guys!

Have this major job coming up me thinks. Am replacing the gearbox at the end of the month anyway, so figure I might as well do the rest of the stuff.

 

I don't suppose that anyone knows if I were to supply the parts for a garage what is the average amount of labour they'd charge? :?

To replace the gearbox, its no more than an extra hour to do the chains so definitely worthwhile. VW quoted 10-12 hours (none of the mechanics there had done it before though) so would be in excess of 1K. I recon a specialist could do it in 8 though and that's being generous. So it all depends on what the hourly rate is. I did it on the drive in 4 or 5 evenings taking it steady, unless you've never used a spanner or have no tools its easily do able by yourself, plus a friend for gearbox handling. Have a quick read through the guide on the wiki.

Well my mate and I are changing the gearbox and clutch anyway, of which he's more than capable, although I didn't know how easy it was (or not) to do the chains and tensioners...people seem to make quite a big deal of it.

Dont be daft!!! Get it done while its off, i know of a very well respected chap on here who's tensioner was in bits with only just over 70k on the clock and this was down to low miles not high miles. It's a complete no brainer to me if the gear box is coming off :wave: :cuckoo: :wink:

I cant even remember writing that? LOL

 

My gearbox has been off and on more times than my underpants the last 6 months! Complete nightmare :(

 

Anyway my chains are all done now. As you say my upper tensioner was down to the rivets on my 84k car.

 

I honestly dont believe there can be any VR's out there now that don't require the chains doing.

When mine were done at just over a 100k there was barely any wear on tensioners, I guess you just don't know until you get at them. On the other hand my clutch was quite worn and there was a couple of hair line cracks.
