Toad 0 Posted July 29, 2009 There's a lot of advice around, and even servicing guides in the Wiki. Just have a bit of a search.
Jim 2 Posted July 29, 2009 TBH im a bit dissapointed with the lack of helpful replies tho.....i thought this is what the forum was all about really? Sometimes people just have nothing to add - especially on areas where things have been discussed many many times over the course of the forums history. Service items are one of those things! FWIW, I'd go to VW for all service items to be honest.
Supercharged 2 Posted July 29, 2009 approx 104k on clock last service at 98.4k - performed by the vw specialist the previous owners knew/used & was part of the purchase agreement brake fluid changed 11/06 at 94k [if i recall correct] no known issues [hope i dont tempt fate there] - apart from the usual occassional ABS light lol anyway.....i was hoping for suggestions on brands/types of spark plugs maybe ignition leads air filter oil [tho oilman has helped on this with his thread the other wk] brake fluid & would it need doing now any tools i may need to make it 'simples' Big question really... at over 100k it could do with all kinds of stuff doing depending on whats been done before and how it's been treated... I would put it in for an MOT to check all the lights / tyres / boots / brakes / play in bushes and suspension side of things and do the engine service yourself as above. I would change all the filters and fluids (inc coolant, gear oil and PAS fluid) and sparkplugs, you will need the tool for the plug leads so make sure you have it or buy the metal version and also I would change the leads if they are original or look old. Obviously other engine stuff will be checking for oil leaks, any worn pipes etc and also check the V belt for wear - to change this you will need an M8 by 80mm bolt to de-tension Brake fluid is well overdue but as it's ABS you will need to pressure bleed using an eezibleed kit or similar. As Jim says I would buy all the bits from VW including the oil and get it running well as standard first before trying different oils etc. You need to get it checked for fault codes on a Diagnostic machine or use VAGCOM to see if there is anything logged and also check for any cracks in the underseal and lube all the locks / hinges and sunroof as per the service schedule (again, get this stuff from VW as it seems to be far supperior to anything else) Hope that helps and gives an idea of where to begin! Neil VR6 0 Posted July 29, 2009 Check the serpentine belt which drives the oil pump (left side of engine) for cracks too. I’m sure a local forum member wouldn’t mind having a look over the car for you as well. I wouldn’t replace the leads and plugs unless the engine is exhibiting symptoms that point towards these components being faulty.
Jay23Sx 0 Posted July 29, 2009 I'm not sure I'm really qualified to give advice, however I'll let you know what I did. Spark Plugs from AVS (VW Spares) as they are supposedly the same brand as you'd get from VW (Beru) HT leads came from Dub Power. Mainly because Halfords didn't sell them if I was honest. Again I believe AVS sell the same as you'd get from VW Air Filter from VW as it's not very expensive Fuel Filter from WV because, well, it's the fuel system and though original was best Oil Filter from AVS and Oil from Halfrods (although I'll be getting a slightly more uprated filter and oil next time) G12++ coolant (I think they're on ++ now, I know it's changed in the last month or two) from VW Oh and make sure you get a new washer for the sump plug, I didn't and I'm sure I have a (very slow) leak now. Edit: If you want to check your hoses, a general poke is the best bet. I had a leak in the top rad house but initially I couldn't find where it was coming from. A few prods later and I almost had an eye full of coolant as it had a tiny tiny hole which only became evident with a prod. I went all VW on new hoses as your only other alternative really is performance ones. Take your time on flushing the cooling system as well, I thought I'd done a thorough job until a few weeks after doing it my new, very white expansion tank turned brown. Apparently a trip round the dishwasher should help sort that and I know for next time!
Timbo 0 Posted July 29, 2009 I think you'll struggle to get your engine in the dishwasher, to be honest.
fla 9 Posted July 29, 2009 well pointed out about flushing the cooling system. I did mine about 3 times during the day, also with a basic flushing liquid as i couldnt get the VW stuff and after a few weeks the coolant is brownish again. Obviosuly didnt do a good job. I think its the rad itself which retains a lot of the crud so if you can extend to it, its worth replacing. Otherwise it depends how far you want to go - you could end up changing all the hoses, bushes, bearings, sensors and still find things to replce. After all our cars are pretty old now! Best of luck and enjoy it :)
Jay23Sx 0 Posted July 30, 2009 I think you'll struggle to get your engine in the dishwasher, to be honest. While I get the joke, honest, I've actually seen dishwashers big enough to an engine :) On this occasion it may just be easier to take the expansion tank off and just put that in
