dukest 0 Posted January 28, 2011 A well-known garage just quoted me 4.5 hours labour to change the cams on my car. Given that another well known place quoted me 2 hours (they're just further away), I wonder how many cups of tea the first place would get through in their extra 2.5 hours?! boost monkey 0 Posted January 28, 2011    are they grinding the cams from blank billets or something?!
Supercharged 2 Posted January 28, 2011 Lol, Who was that? - The same place that charges a million pounds to do a set of brake lines by any chance? 2 hours is more like it, trying to think if the Shrick makes it any quicker or more tricky - either way it has to come off... I remember watching Kev getting his done at Stealth a few years ago - I think that was done in an hour or so, just proves it's worth traveling sometimes to go to somewhere that knows the engine inside out. dukest 0 Posted January 28, 2011 Yeah, I don't see a schrick makes it any more difficult but I didn't even mention it anyway! Still thinking of doing them myself but just not confident retiming on my own without having done it myself before.
boost monkey 0 Posted January 28, 2011 i'm the same with timing John, can be quite a worry!
mrbeige 0 Posted January 28, 2011 just proves it's worth travelling sometimes to go to somewhere that knows the engine inside out. I'm not entirely sure knowing the engine inside out as anything to do with it. Extraction and wee, is more like it.....
mic_VR 3 Posted January 28, 2011 Why you changing the cams then John?
dukest 0 Posted January 28, 2011 was going to be part of a bigger job which is on hold but the short story is that i've sold the 268s and need to put the 263s in instead. the guy's been waiting so i need to get on with it!
Majik 0 Posted January 28, 2011 The garage who quoted 4.5 hours are probably going by Autodata times which can overquote on some jobs, are they VW specialists?
dukest 0 Posted January 28, 2011 yup, thats all they do so they will know exactly how long it takes, but I agree, thats how they'll have quoted. kind of makes it worse though!
Supercharged 2 Posted January 28, 2011 But sometimes Autodata is under becuase of issues you get with old cars etc... I can't imagine even VW would quote that long?
Joe M 0 Posted January 28, 2011 Yeah, I don't see a schrick makes it any more difficult but I didn't even mention it anyway! Still thinking of doing them myself but just not confident retiming on my own without having done it myself before. If your only worry is the timing then I would say just go for it. If your using the same cam gears, then before you take them off just mark the gears and chain with some tip ex dots, then when it goes back together line the dots back up. Schrick makes it "slightly" harder as the access to the bolts holding it to the bottom manifold is tighter, I undone the front engine mount and jacked it up a bit to get to them. dukest 0 Posted January 28, 2011 cheers, yup, am going to have a good read and probably give it a shot
poll250 0 Posted January 28, 2011 I'd say do it yourself if you've got the time/tools. The only potentially difficult part is getting the rear cam sprocket off. I just bought a new one for about £35 as I didn't want to faff about.
Goldie 2 Posted January 28, 2011 If you split the Schrick and remove the centre piece (the flat bit) it is quicker than undoing studs down by the radiator... Many moons ago i put the 268s in my old one, not hard but yes the timing is a worry and the cam sprockets were very tight...
