Just had a stroll through the thread, you've done very well to get this car to where it is now..

Im assuming the car is at collingwood? You based there? Im in the area at the end of march if you need an extra pair of hands...

Goldie - Thanks mate, and yes at collingwood. I'm on POs course and here for probably another year. I'm sticking it in the car club to do the work slow time now. Let me know when you're around and I'll give you a guided tour!

Rob - You've been saying that for far too long mate! Get it sorted and get to the National Day. Little convoy up with Rog and we can all have a good catch up mate!

Just had a good look and yep, new rad required. :(

Looks like a stone has managed to find its way right between the slats in the grille, and puncture it. Now in car club ufn whilst I pull out just about everything in front of the dash. :cowboy:

Its started.

Had an hour at lunch today and whipped the front end and bonnet off. Pic shows slam still attached but that's off too now. I braced myself thinking it would be quite heavy as it looks quite substantial, but it was surprisingly light actually! Just compiling a list of parts I want to change, but when the engine is out I'll be able to identify what else needs changing. I'm doing it slowly from here on in as I'll be taking lots of photos and labelling everything I can so I don't forget what goes where!

Poor old girl , will be right as rain with a new rad . I'm not envious of that work shop one little bit !

Haha, its a bloody mess in there, but I'm on the case Rob! Got a few quid to make it look a little more presentable and professional, and to get a few tools. Floor paint alone is almost £800 though so thats most of the budget gone! Should be very good once finished, but like most things, its a lengthy project!

Good work Sean, out of interest is this just to take the rad out??

BTW I painted that floor when I was on mechs course, it was only 15 odd years ago, can't believe it needs doing again already...lol

Goldie - yeah it is mate. I've taken over as Manager recently ad it had been a it neglected for quite a few years, so once I finish my current module it's all hands to the pump to bring it up to scratch and make it into a respectable club again.

Rog, Sean - I'd planned on pulling the engine to replace a leaking crank seal and give the engine and bay a good clean up and paint at the end of the month anyway, so with the rad I thought I may as well do it all together.

Snatched another hour at lunch today. front end all off now and I've started labelling wiring.

Its not a great deal, but sticking it here is ideal to document whats going on and a little reference.

Happy to say every nut and bolt has come out without any trouble at all, although there are one or two missing screw around the fan shround and plastic supports at the front which I'll replace. Its all very solid so far, though there are a few small rust scabs on the cross member but nothing at all to worry about. Anyone know how much powdercoating costs roughly for each of the valance, cross member, fan shroud, Front mount bracket etc? Never had anything done so just curious if its worth doing if its not too expensive!

There's a very reasonably priced powder coaters just behind the Range at Gosport. They have done loads of work for me in the past.

With powder coating, go for quality over price if you can. I got a local powder coated to do a lot of my stuff and i'm not full of confidence with it lasting. The guy I used tends to specialise in gates and not car parts... I'll see how it wears!

Good effort though, always pleased when I see somebody getting stuck in!

Yeah I understand Sean. Just a case really of how much I can afford to get done tbh! - Well, without the missus knowing anyway! lol.

Not sure she'd go for that mate! I had planned on getting it all out at the weekend. I'll be in Surrey filling up sand bags instead now. Couldn't have come at a worse time really. :x

Ordered a few bits today. New rad, oil cooler and seals, water pump, inlet manifold gaskets, and drive belt. That'll do for now, although the list will grow once its out and inspected on Saturday. Obviously service items regardless but I'll wait til I know everything else before having my pants pulled down from VW. Gonna pop in and see the powdercoater that Martin (VR6South) suggested as well if I have time this weekend. Got no further on with it yet, although I'll be in tomorrow and Thursday lunchtime to finish labelling, disconnect driveshafts and exhaust, then its just a couple of bolts holding it in!

Should have a decent picture update once its out.

We definately need pictures Sean. Do you have a TPS near you? I just got loads of genuine parts at trade price, big saving over the main dealers.

Yeah I have Chris. I ordered a couple of parts from there a while back and although they were happy to sell to me there was barely any discount over dealer rrp, and I get decent discount from the dealer anyway. I'll go back and try to set up a trade account now I'm "car club manager" though, so hopefully they'll be good to me!

A bit off topic Sean but did you see in the news today regarding the 6 day old being attacked by the family dog? Am i right is this the breed of dog your Mrs has put a deposit on?

Yes mate. Saw it last night actually which was a bit spooky. We've had a talk about it but not come to a decision yet. It could happen with any dog tbf but the breed are known to be very good with children generally. Still puts a big doubt in our mind though with a 10 month old son. We'll give it some more thought before paying out any more though, as at the moment it's only £100 we will have lost which is not the end of the world.
