Engine cutting out after start up

Recommended Posts

No the pst i was expecting to make but…

There was an unusual noise when i went to start it, it will turn over and fire but dies shortly after. If i feather the throttle i can keep it going but as soon as i stop so does it.

Tried an alternate coil pack, same..

Any other ideas?

When you feather the throttle to keep it running is it running ok or running rough?

Yep sounds like a vac leak. Is the damper box ok? They tend to crack underneath and around the inlet/outlets

I have a spare maf mate, plus one on the car, how many pins is yours? Mine is 4 pin. Only asking as I've seen a VR6 with different pins, 5 I think?

If yours is 4 you are welcome to try them out :)

I may need to take you up on that Martin..

Tried another damper.. Can hold an idle but sounds terrible..

My MAF is the one with the silver panel on it..

Mine has no silver panel? It does have a K&N filter sticker lol, so silver panel might be under that?

Part number of the spare is 021 906 462, it's a BOSCH and it looks just like the one on the car

Update..

Changed damper box, can get it to run, sounds like a 3 cylinder..

Pulled each HT lead one by one and they appear ok.

Disonnect the MAF while running and it starts to stall, reconnect and it starts to run a bit better.

Bit stuck now, was getting up at 5 to head to a show, looks like that is sacked..

If you want to try these MAF's, I'm in all night, and planning to watch the football, so not going to sleep anytime soon

Also, I'm sure I've read that the sponge in the damper box can break up and get sucked into the pipes? Might be worth taking them off to check they are clear

Would a MAF affect the start up?

Not sure mate, I'm not that knowledgable , hopefully someone else will know?

I've probably got a spare ISV and damper box too

Make sure none of that sponge has been sucked into the inlet tract

Edit - I see that's already been suggested

If theres a notable change in engine note when you unplug the maf then id say the maf is working properly

Id probably agree Jon..

I can get it to run but it 'put puts' and doesn't sound great. I don't want to do much more tonight, the neighbours won't be impressed with me starting and running the car..

Do you have Vagcom Martin?

Just the free one mate, I also have a code reader that I've yet to try,not sure how much the free one tells you as I've only used it a couple of times

Another thing worth adding, if i disconnect the ISV plug with the car running it makes no difference..

How old are your ht leads the gf had a weird stutter and sounded rough on idle and driving. Turned out to be 1 dead ht lead and was running on 5

I pulled them one by one and each one affected the running so assume them to be ok..

I can't help but feel the noice when i first started it was significant. It was a thud/crack noise, I've no idea what though..
