to remap or not to remap?

Recommended Posts

I'm putting a new Longlife SS cat back exhaust on the VR6 this coming Monday at a cost of 360 squids. The company also do remaps, is it worth getting a remap at the same time as the new exhaust? It's only about 12bhp gain but I dont know what other difference it could make. Has anyone got experience of remapping a VR6 and what could I expect for the extra 160 bucks?

Have a search online for reviews of the companies remaps on N/A engines. Lots offer the service but only some can do it to a good standard. There are so many variables due to different characteristics of different engines, and you may end up with poor or aggressive power delivery or throttle response, or power coming in in a smaller or unusable rev range. If done right, it'll reduce the flat area in the lower revs and give a smooth but quicker throttle response.

Hi Graham, Ill just add my thoughts, I had a remapped ecu fitted to my car previously and although throttle response seemed a tad better I'm not sure what actual gains it achieved. Luckily I only bought the ecu for like 30 quid as my original died. From talking to people and reading up a lot of tuning places offer these set increases in HP from a remap when in reality on a largely stock engine I cant see them managing to free up 12HP, seems highly optimistic . I think remapping, much like Sean said above more than anything alters the way in which the power is delivered, more than any actual increase.

If it was me, for £160 quid, Id give it a bloody thorough service, new plugs, air filter(panel filter?) leads, oil filter, oil, gearbox oil and replace any manky looking sensors, should be ale to get that done for the money and would, I'm sure, sharpen everything up nicely. If you are going to go ahead with a remap get the car scanned for fault codes first as some garages will map it anyway and any issues could be magnified under a new map.

I'm sure someone will now come along and tell me I'm talking out my arse but there you go.

Cheers,

Max,

Thanks for the replies. She was serviced by a performance car specialist in September and the Lambda and Crankshaft sensors were replaced to help her through the emissions test at the last MOT, around the same time. She generally runs really well, because I'm changing to a new SS exhaust I was wondering if there'd be much extra benefit from having her remapped at the same time, it sounds from the replies that they're at best hit and miss and at worst a bit pointless!

The 12hp comes from revs by increasing the rev limiter.

I would recommend getting the SP263 cams along with a Stealth Racing remap and that is a difference you WILL notice immediately.

Something else worth mentioning, don't bother with a Schrick VGI if you are using SP 263 cams. Stealth are seeing no gain what so ever (by adding a VGI), so I suspect the VGI was tuned for the stock cams, or their own 268s.

Is there a company anyone has used near or even in Wales who could sort out this kind of upgrade for me? I can do it myself on Forza but Im pretty sure if I tried that in real life it would end badly, VERY badly!
