Advice needed to stop shredding my rear tyres

Hi guys!

 

Beautiful weather now for cruising in the C!

Only problem is my rear tyres are getting shredded by the arches catching the edge of tyres with normal driving with only me in the car (13stone)

 

They are 215/40/17 on the rear

205/40/17 fronts

 

Fk coilovers fitted before me (over 6 yrs ago)

 

Bbs Rs rims.

I your not running a staggered setup, then I'd swap your wheels from front to back to see if the 205 fit better (I had no rubbing issues with 205/40/17's).

There is a portion at the bottom of the arch towards the front of the car that catches the tyres - i've tried to get this rolled by Archenemy but they said it couldnt be done. I believe this needs to be either removed or the arches pulled, or indeed use 205 tyres on the rear. That will give a stretch which is not really for me, tbh.

The simple answers are:

 

Raise car height.

Bring wheels further in.

Fit narrower tyres.

Roll/flare arches.

 

Which option or combination of options you do is up to you and depends on what 'look' you want from the car.

Well

I don't want it to be too high.

(Plus the suspension at the moment is a little bouncy)

Rollin arches sounds good but don't want it to modify the outside appearance

I'm being told different things from garages who have looked at it.

Saying paint might crack!?!

Arches will flare slightly?!

 

Has anyone rolled their arches at the rear and got any experiences?

I think the cheapest option is to fit my old 205/40/17s

With a stretch, and if still catching then adjust suspension or change to a better setup?!?

Id get the arch lips rolled flat for a start , there is a difference between tolling them flat and flaring them

 

You could always take the disk off the rear and get a machine shop to take 3mm or so of the mounting face , this would help bring the wheel in

 

With all that and maybe using the other tyres you should be ok

 

If its not id just change set up as if its rubbing with just you in it then it mist be quite bad pkus look at the state of your tyres , i wouldnt want to be going quick on those tyres

Those tyres aren't that wide - must be the wheel offset that's wrong...

... Yep looking at the first pic the car would fail an MOT with wheels sticking out further than the arches!

 

ET must be under 20

When I bought my C,

It was the same 205/40R17,

On low coilovers,

With 2.5cm spacers! :eek:

 

 

 

Got garage to remove spacers

Increase height (not too high and not too low)

Can now go over speed bumps and bumpy roads without a scrape! :dance:

The dishes at the back have been changed from the original to 0.5" stainless steel polished from Dave in London (just Matz)

You need 35 tyre profile with 215's shouldn't rub!

 

I got some 35 profiles, I will get them fitted today with some luck, however I think they will still rub n shred the rubber as the suspension is either too low or bounces to much as the fk setup is softer than most. But will try anyway!!!! Argh!!!!!!

I don't know who is doing the MOT tests on your car but they need their license removing as that's just plain dangerous.

 

Hopefully you can get it sorted without too much hassle but you run the risk of a high speed tyre failure which may result in you killing someone driving around like that.

Does it matter what the figure is? currently there's too much poke, its either adjust the arches, fit a narrower axle (if avaiable) or get the wheel centres machined to reduce said poke.

 

I presume there's no spacers fitted?

 

A pic of a G60 rear axle, stub axle flange to stub axle flange, narrower than a VR6 axle?

Don't think the stretch is the issue. I'm running 17x8's with a 205 tyre and it's completely fine even though it's a fair bit of stretch. It's the cutting done by the arch. One particularly big bump and it'll cut through.

 

If you're worried about getting the arches pulled or rolled, you can always get a decent bodyshop to cut off the excess lip and reseal the arch. That's what I've got on mine. I'll get a pic for you later if I get chance.
