Replacement Fuel Pump - VR6, 2015 and onwards

Recommended Posts

Suddenly I'm glad I bought a Lucas one, instead of the VDO I was going to wait for.

That's my conclusion as well... These are old, I'm not sure if VDO made them recently either...

With your story, it confirms it. The nozzle and the screw areas are classics breaking point. You must have been surprised and very disappointed when that happened to you...

I think in conclusion, I won't aim for r OEM replacement on that specific part, they didn't aged well.

Yeah, it was a pain when it happened as I had no pump at all - and when something like that happens, it can be hard proving that it wasn't your fault - but luckily I've been doing business with that particular parts specialist for years and several different cars, so they trusted me and were happy to replace FOC. Even when I've had dodgy parts with no return possible, they have sold me a replacement at cost.

Soon after I bought my VDO pump from a seller on ebay a chap called Ian on the Facebook group bought the same item from the same seller. He had exactly the same cracking on the body so sent his back too. He then contacted VDO Birmingham who sent out a pump, this was cracked too and he's returned that one. I queried the item bought from the ebay seller and the best they could say is that maybe the screws had been over-torqued at the factory.

The pump housing in my car is fairly old but hasn't suffered from any cracks, see photos, looks to me that the area around the screw mounts has been thickened to prevent cracking, maybe this isn't a VDO housing. Maybe fitting the VDO pump into another housing is the solution? I've looked around for a 4 bar pump that I can fit in my housing but most seem to be 3 bar.

Anyway my car is stood doing nothing at the moment so short term I'm going to buy the 4 bar unit from Heritage - https://www.heritagepartscentre.com/uk/1h0919651q-fuel-pump-with-housing-for-g60-and-vr6.html Longer term I may look into using the Walbro pump that I've seen other use and I believe Stealth recommend or they did at some point.

Hello,

Just so you are aware the picture on Heritage Parts site shows a Unit with Screws holding the halves together, but this is different to the picture shown on JP Parts Website for 1H0919651Q, which I attach, the JP own parts website pictured item has no screws , the halves clip together 9

As an aside, has anyone ever traced the "FORST" supplier Heritage suggest they use?, I have never found that company on any web search.

Cheers.

Cressa, I did see this listing as I know you have suggested Lucas before but it doesn't mention the operating pressure.

I messaged to confirm and it is a 4 bar pump. Perfect for my VR and works a treat. This and a one way valve in line solved my hit start issue too

That pump is the 3 bar version, the 4 bar version is as per the Heritage site.

I think there are very few 4 bar pumps out there - nearly all sites list the 3 bar pumps as being suitable for all VR6 engines, AAA/ABV/1.8/2.9 - I've never tried it to see what happens - you could probably either change the FPR, or hope the 4 bar regulator lets the pressure build up.  It's also possible to buy individual motorsport pumps of the right output, and there are billet mounting plates available that can fit onto the grooves in the tank floor if you want to go down that route - it's a bit more expensive, but hey, the price of a new VDO that may or may not be past its sell by date isn't cheap either!

Update, as I would have had to remove my "NOS", from about 2006 VDO Pump I mentioned I installed 18+ months ago to replace the fuel hoses (which I did change at the time , but stupid me, used the wrong hose, needs to be Submersible type, which I have now got Cohline 2190), it was just as well I did.

The couple of small cracks noticed before install had spread like cancer, and given time probably the whole top cap would have broken apart, only the swirlpot top, where the return nozzle  is affected, all the rest is fine, so its probably a different crappy plastic.

See attached pictures, to me this evidence that the VOO NOS items, are probably not worth the risk, as even if the cracks are not there to start with, they could start sometime later.

The Pump itself is ok, I have taken the unit apart completely to clean the filters, I obviously need to remove the old fuel (car has not been driven in 10+ years, has been started many times, but always on a low tank, and the fuel is now pretty horrible.!

I may buy the JP Pump, and see if i can swap my VDO Pump into the JP casing, I would then have a spare pump.

Crikey that's bad! Had to have another look at the top cap on the one I have just for piece of mind and it's all good.

I've ordered the 4 bar JP pump today for delivery tomorrow and like you I'm going get hold of another pump to fit in the spare housing I now have. I'll report back with my findings and some photos so you can make your own mind up on the JP pump.

I didn't go with the Lucas pump as it seems too cheap.

Just a thought after silently reading this thread. If you're buying pumps and casings to separate is it worth sourcing a 2nd hand original mk3 golf pump assembly and swapping in the 4bar vdo pump?

Assume this issue is because the NOS stuff has been made from inferior plastic whereas the originals are made out of better plastic and assume are going to be better than jp group casings.

I'm only thinking this as the pump i removed from my mk3 and now reinstalled so can't photo it looked the same as my corrado from memory except it is 3 bar.

I could be wrong about casings but thought it worth mentioning as mk3 pumps can be had for not a lot of money.

IF the Mk3 pump has the same swirl pot mountings and location for the fuel level sender, it should work.

I think the cracking problems are not so much poor quality (not generally an issue with VDO) but the result of age (these might well be 20 years old), poor storage and bad handling in transit and warehouses. It definitely means you should check them over carefully after receiving one. I don't think the swirl pot would disentigrate anyway.

My VDO pump was not poorly stored , handled badly in any way, it was crack free when I bought it new, but 10+ years later had developed a couple of cracks on the swirl pot top casing when I went to install it,  18+ months later the cracks had spread on the swirl pot top casing only, so it is most likely the plastic has aged , and dried out , if it had been sitting in a tank full of fuel I am guessing it would not have aged and cracked in that way.

The main plastic parts of the pump are made of POM (Polyoxymethylene), but the top casing that is cracking, has no markings at all to indicate the type of plastic.

Anyway, I have probably spent too much time on this subject, so will get on with something else now !

Interesting - so I guess it must just be age related then - btw, I meant possible damage in storage/handling and transit by the suppliers, not on the customer's part. Didn't mean to imply that you had damaged your own pump!

See photos of the JP pump, they must have changed the housing for both 3 and 4 bar pumps and done away with the screw fixings. This one has markings on the housing for a 4 bar pump according to their website which is the one I ordered. My VDO sender looks like it will fit ok. Just remains to be seen how long it lasts but I will be rebuilding my old housing as a backup.

If you Google the repl no on the box

1h0 919 651 q

it comes back as 3 bar…..

one does state 80 litres per hour which is more meaningful than the 4 bar banded about here as that’s the job of the fpr?

Looks a decent quality unti in the pictures to be fair (I'm an anti JP Group person after having one of their MAF sensors).

Dox - i googled the 1115202700 PN and got a 4 bar pump

1h0 919 651 q = 4 bar

1h0 919 651 p = 3 bar

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/jp-group/8172201

either way hopefully this JP group pump will offer a decent solution for you.

This looks to have a good flow rate of 100L per hour and rated at 4 bar

Oh I see flow rate and pressure are related. It is a indeed a headache.

Mine was replaced by stealth in 2019. Only the pump itself though. I hope it lasts another 20 years.

That's insane! Thanks for sharing your story and looking into it. I agree with you, plastic is aging badly over the years exposed to air. Cheers
