Respray/Bodywork

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm planning out my respray and any bodywork whilst I have my interior out fixing a sunroof and just generally tidying up.

I've had one indicative quote from a place in Mid Beds (vehicle restoration) who said £7k for just a respray + extra for body work on top. That sounded expensie to me. It wasn't back to metal but they do seem to do a really good job.

I'm going somewhere else for a quote on Sat 29th.

What should I be looking at in the current market? I want a windows out jobby to decent standard. I know I currently have some surface rust around the edge of my fuel filler lip and some 2in of rust at the drivers side rear sill (inside and out - this was where water was collecting from my leaky sunroof). My rear arches have been repaired but have signs of minor bubbles again.

Any recommendations greatly appreciated, feel free to PM me if you don't want to put figures or info on a public forum.

I'd say 3-5k at least for a respray, depending on quality and then you need to add extra for any rust repair and welding and all the bits of trim and seals that will need replacing.

The major cost of a respray is the amount of labour required to strip the car down carefully and then the time and care taken for paint prep work - the latter will really affect the look and longevity of the end result. You can save a fair bit of money by doing as much stripping of the car yourself as you can. You might well end up replacing the windscreen, trim strips, badges, grill and roof trims.

Over here in Ireland I would be looking at at least €5000 for a respray - I'd personally not be surprised at an end total of 8-10k for a job up to my standards. I'm sure others will come back with cheaper quotes, but I'm talking a factory finish that will last 10-20 years again.

Unfortunately, this is the going rate for a proper job with lights, windows and trims removed. If anyone is offering a respray for substantial less you will need to look very carefully at the scope of work.

I’ll speak to my body shop in Rugeley mate the one partner owns a rado and the other mk2 golfs and e30s so an older car do t bother them , all the Vw people’s use them round here .

Right just spoke to him and they said for a full respray glass out etc starts at 6.5 k . I would seriously consider jumping on the ferry and getting done on the continent at them prices .

Unfortunately full resprays are massively time consuming and the materials aren't cheap either which makes them expensive for a good quality job. Prepping it yourself will lower the cost but they will still have to redo a lot of it just be sure, if your car starts bubbling up with rust a few months after they are done it will reflect badly on their work.

I prepped a lot of mine myself, welded up anything that needed doing, pulled arches etc. they finished it off, welded audi door handles in, smoothed off the bonnet washer jets and rear wiper. Was a full windows out job and cost me around £2 - 2.5k from memory but I live up norf where everything isn't stupidly priced. After buying brand new window scraper seals, roof & sunroof seals etc I reckon I was around the 3k mark but it still looks mint now, putting aside all the stupid dings I've done myself.

Cheers for the comments. So that is about right. I am a believer in getting it right first time so will have to save a bit more.

I was thinking 4 + welding and parts so say 6k in total but I am off in my estimations.

Is it just me but has this doubled in price for the last 5 years. Well above inflation.

I think you will get a good body shop to do that if you shop about with your budget.

I paid 3k for the roof to be cut 4” back from the screen .

The usual rust by the rear wiper .

Bubbles on the screen edge of the boot lid going up towards the roof on both sides

The body work was cut out of both rear windows .

There was other stuff as well but without looking at the receipt I can’t remember. The price for removing all the glass removal and refitting and new front screen seals was inc .

Edit. The car had a full detail as well .

That is really good, their facebook page and documented progress looks awesome. Well worth the trip by the looks of things.

Found yours in their picture gallery - lots of work done and looks bloody great. I love your alloys. What suspension setup are you running, looks perfect.

Yeah the pics are on here too, but probably can’t be viewed at the moment. She’s currently on Koni’s . I like the ride height and they are not rock hard . I’m too old for hugging the weeds and feeling stones under the wheels lol . The alloys are compomotive’s , bought in a forum group buy in 2012 . Thanks for the compliments.

i paid £2700 for a complete respray 3 years ago (flash red) i stripped the car completely, the body shop removed the rear side windows the tail gate screen remained just removed the seal. i removed the windscreen myself as it had been a badly fitted replacement with so much sealant it was stuck to the A pillar trims.i carried out some minor welding repairs to the rear sill / wheel arch joint. There was the usual shopping trolley dents and a crease in the rear bumper which were all repaired

The level of finish was excellent and still looks as good today although the car does not get much use.

At the time when he delivered the car back the bodyshop owner had under priced the work a little as the car took longer to prep as the old paint kept clogging up his sanders. This guy knew his stuff a quick walk around my car and he could tell which panels had seen paint in the past .

Crap me do you think the front windscreen was replaced at some point and the fitter didn't bond it that well and let water in, glad to see you sorted it though, this is a famous problem in Porsche 993 + 964.

That's the price I would like to hear ! I got quoted up to 3 k on my car for x2 sides. kept going back to the body shop and ended up building the guy some racks out of scaffolding and parting with 1.1k.

I paid a little under £3k (no VAT) for a glass out respray albeit 11 years ago! Wasn't much rust to resolve. Was great for a time but the job lasted about 8 years (it wasn't garaged much and was left parked up for 2 years) Renewed a few bits of trim at the same time.

I'm undertaking a full resto now, I'm stripping the shell and rebuilding. Welding and Spray work will be circa £8k/£9k. New panels about £1500. Two visits to a dip will be 2-3k I'd expect.

i find that trying to find someone who carries out good welding work is what is difficult now. the last car that needed quite a bit of welding was carried out by a local elderly gentleman who has since passed away and his work was first class and took a great deal of pride in his work and did not charge excessive amounts of money. he even did work for a local german prestige dealership who look after older cars for long term customers who would not trust their own bodyshops to carry out repairs. A lot just cover up the rust!

That price you got quoted is what i would expect going through insurance which we all know is a racket!

My car was repainted in 2012. I paid £2,500 with no vat . As said I’ve spent another 3k two years ago because of the damage caused by the body shop removing the windows . They scratched the metal cutting them out , but did not treat these areas . Therefore 5 years later the body had rusted from the inside out .

I've had another quote through. The car doesn't need a full respray but it is coming out bloody expensive. This was a garage in my area - finishline - I really liked the owner and the quality of their work.

They quoted 5500-7500 plus vat labour and 850 plus vat in materials. So £10k basically for

Windows out

Sides sprayed (bumpers, wings and doors will come off)

Rust Repair to the door and sand blast rear arches.

Windscreen a pillar cut out rust repair

Cut out and fit new fuel filler piece.

Treat some rust in the sill.

Maybe I am out of touch. Need to contact restoshack

Don't know how far you are away from here mate but this is where I got mine resprayed last year:

http://greghowell.co.uk/

Although he's a Porsche specialist he's knows his way around a Rado and they were recommended to me by Vince at Stealth.

You saw my car recently so at least you've seen an example of his work and I paid less than what you've been quoted!

Cheers mate, Greg seemed to think my car was a lot easier than most because it was flat black rather than metallic so I assume this will play in your favour too!

Have you considered keeping the seals in place and just getting them lifted with wires so you can spray underneath the seals. I couldn't justify 10k or I would be thinking of selling my car and buying one for 8-10k that someone has all ready spent a shed load on. I got both my sides sprayed for 1k - but mine had a full respray 4 years ago it was just the arches that needed spraying so was best to spray both the full sides. Thankfully mine was just surface rust on the arches .
