  1. Well now I'm the custodian of a VR, I'm busy getting the valver ready for sale. So far I've cleaned up all of the main positive and earth connections in the bay to make sure that they're tip-top. A new starter was also fitted a couple of weeks ago along with new tyres so that's all good. Yesterday I set about replacing the cam cover gasket as the old one was weeping down the plug bores a little. Sadly once the cover was off I realised I had the wrong gasket set! Didn't know that the later 9As have a different gasket. That should arrive tomorrow. Today I fitted a new cam belt and new plugs. Tomorrow it can all go back together when the gasket arrives and be mechanically sound - on to a few cosmetic bits then ;)
  2. Haha, I was waiting for you to notice John :) All I need now is the red B3 and my cloning process is complete!!
  3. LOL fair enough, sounds like a plan to me! :)
  4. Partsbase can often help give a clue as to which sensor does what. - http://www.partsbase.org/vw/eu/
  5. Seats look comfy! :) Ref the door cards, would it be possible to resin/glue a thickish plastic strip to the back to hold the shape?
  6. That's looking nice. I like the red cam cover
  7. lol, I'm sure it will all coming flooding back to you when it's time! Why July?
  8. LOL - It's ok mate I didn't think you were being harsh - but I was stabbing in the dark a bit! :thumbleft:
  9. Fair point - I was just stabbing in the dark to be honest! lol
  10. Hi Mahn! Welcome - best you got some pics up of your VR - we love pics :)
  11. I have the same with my driver's door Jim. I tried adjusting the other day but it still drops as it comes off the pin. I'm guessing that it's just down to a worn hinge - similar problem to MK1 and MK2 Golfs. The car wasn't jacked when I was messing with it.
  12. Black caps on MK1 Golfs are problematic, not sure if it's the same on these. Maybe it's worth swapping for a blue one as it would be a cheap fix if it's the problem
  13. Hi Dougie I wont on this one as it's a ribbed, rubber gasket with metal inner. The existing one didn't have any sealant. If using cork or card type gaskets then I always use a gasket sealer. MK1 Golfs are notorious for leaking cam covers - although mostly due to ill fitting/over torqueing the nuts. For the cork ones on these I'd seal it too as think every MK1 I've had has leaked at some point! You only need 10nm on the cover nuts - it's tempting to over tighten them but they only need pinching up. A torque wrench is handy for this job!

    Boot struts

Thanks for the offer Dan. I bit the bullet and ordered some of SGS last night. Lets hope they're better this time. Couldn't bring myself to spend almost £90 on a genuine pair!
  15. Thanks Will. James had pm'd me back and said the same. I don't know what bulbs are fitted but know they're not standard so they could well be nightbreakers. Thanks again ;)

    Boot struts

No where much else seems to do them and genuine from VWH are over 40 quid each!! I'll boost my biceps and get the SGS ones again! lol
  17. Welcome back Bob. Just checked out your old thread - 'Jucy' turned out nicely! Some good work there ;) What have you got coming now?
  18. I think I'd walk away and find one where everything works
  19. I'd be surprised if it's got wet. Only 20 mins in to first use and the road was wet but not torrential rain and the car still has the under trays at the sides so hope it's nice and dry in there!
  20. Alternator refurb looks good! How much if you don't mind me asking? The reason I ask is when I looked at refurbing the one on my old MK2 Golf 16v last year, it was cheaper to buy a new one!
  21. I ordered on of these Sunday and it arrived today. It's fitted and I'm really pleased about not having to chop the original loom like with the last one I bought elsewhere. Quality is good so I can recommend. I do have one issue though (and only posting here for opinion, it's not a complaint about the loom!) On the way home tonight on main beam my lights suddenly went out! Dip and side lights work ok, but as soon as you click for main beam just side lights stay on. I'm assuming a line fuse has gone so will check in the morning but wondered if anyone has any idea why this may have happened? I know the bulbs aren't OE, they're uprated of some type - but not that bright hence the loom upgrade so can't imagine the bulbs are too powerful. Or could it just be with the greater power now the old bulbs have blown?
  22. Maybe do a deal where you pay for the fans to be sorted - if the car then runs without issue like head gasket, you buy it. If it has issues still then he covers the fan cost and you walk away
  23. Lol - it was dead easy to be honest, just missed that one. Would have finished tonight if it wasn't for getting the wrong gasket set from VWH although I think that could have been my fault :)
  24. ....ok maybe I lied - I missed the bracket that's tucked away under the throttle body! Ooops! :bonk: Had to be something simple
  25. I'm not too sure to be honest. I guess so as it's not a common one
