My local dealer has changed to Honda.
-
Visited Advantage VW in Stirling for 1st time as usual dealer in Grangemouth has gone Honda. Advantage parts guy kindly approved 10% discount for me as CCGB member when I explained I had been receiving it for a few years at Grangemouth branch until it changed its franchise.

Supercharged wrote Thanks for good info about coolant and new blue reservoir cap, Supercharged. 8) Nowt wrong with my 11-year old black original but have just ordered new one from local VAG dealer. £5.73 with CCGB discount. (1st purchase at Advantage VW, Stirling - well done to them for granting 10% discount on asking.)

I am only doing a couple of k miles per annum. Living mainly on a pension, there is no way I will be paying VAG an extortionate sum each year just to get their stamps in my book. If and when I sell the storm, I will have to convince potential purchasers that I am probably more fussy than a VAG "technician" about my car. Does not worry me, to be honest. People will have to be convinced or they can walk away.

latestarter2 wrote Yes - it is VAG's own stuff. Reasonable price, too.

I think G12+ may cause problems if it is mixed with other coolants. G12 + forms a gel even when mixed with some older type of VW coolant - it has to be used unadulterated, I believe. Possibly the best thing to do is to have your cooling system flushed and refilled with 50% G12+ and 50% pure water. At least by coming on to this forum you will find answers to most common problems without having to root around too much. Good Luck.

davidwort wrote Hmm. Maybe it is the Corrado ownership syndrome that drives young(ish), originally sane and rational, men to do this, rather than retirement!

Good informative post, CTGWG60 and the other guys. I like this sort. :D 8)

Some good advice from the guys above. Dont worry about appearing unduly picky and concerned whether you will be ripped off by appearing to be awkward about "guaranteed" cheques. Plenty of devious people prey on this, I am sure. Stick to YOUR desires about how you want paid for the car. The determined buyer will be desperate to go to any length to let you release it to them.

I never owned a multimeter until I found the Corrado needed watched, and I am 61. Rest assured - battery drain is one well discussed topic here, but once you understand it a bit, living with the Corrado has less surprises. I didnt know anything about multimeters either until I bought mine from Maplins for the Corrado. It only cost about £3 when our local store opened, but I am sure the readings from it are nearly spot on as I have taken dozens of readings with it during periods of studying the battery drain. You wont need to spend all that time on it, but I am mostly retired and have the time to do a few geeky/nerdy things like that!

steve_16v wrote I saw similar article where either the BP or Shell "superpetrol" gave less power than the 95ron. This was put down, by the manufacturer, I think, to the fact that the additives were "off" or not up to scratch! So, I'm not convinced either way yet. I do not get any knocking whatsoever from Jet 95 ron.

Got the following on the Canadian C forum, re VR6, any comments, guys? "...Well low octane fuel is not a constraint, it just makes knock more likely. And when knock occurs, the spark must be retarded away from MBT, which produces less torque. In the presence of high-octane fuel there is no compromise. That said, it's important to realize, high octane fuel only helps when the engine would otherwise knock, i.e. when it is at the knock limit. But if you look at a load vs. rpm vs. knock map, there are only very small areas where knock occurs, meaning these are the only possible times you would get more torque with high octane fuel. I think it's only at a small region of low rpm / high load, and at very high rpm full load. At every other operating point of your engine, low octane fuel will perform exactly the same as high octane."

Thanks, kev. My new coil pack is a Beru!
-
Why do you consider Beru as rubbish, 2corrados, please?
-
There certainly is something, Andy T, I used it when I did my change. Some of the steps are actually a bit knuckle scraping. I suspect, but cannot be certain, the article was by our kevhaywire.

Is the "rubber bung" not the grommet that slips into a hole in the bulkhead between the engine/wiper motor compartment and the interior of the car. If it slides freely along the cable it is the grommet. Lift up the bonnet and look for where the accelerator cable goes from the engine compartment into the car to see what I mean. I have just taken pic Accel cable and grommet are above wrapped insulated wires. As for other end at pedal - cant get pic as you have to remove plastic shelf/trim, but I found how to do it using search, as someone has written it up.
-
toon vw You didn't think and old git like me could figure out how to do that on a pc myself, did you?!
-
toon vw part no on my VAG invoice is 191853615A - it is called "clip" (a bit daft, I reckon) and mine cost 36p plus VAT at VAG. ECP part no is 855440450 known as "badge grommet" and cost 37p plus VAT (their's are in black, but fit perfectly. Do not assume they will be in stock at either place - both VAG and ECP had to order mine but they were in next day at ECP and 2 days at VAG.

PS - The Red paint is crap - it turns pink! Well known problem - dont T-cut - you will only make it worse.

We had one in the family for a few years. It came to us with 60k miles on the clock, was immaculate and had cost my eldest son £5k. A classic - and this feeling will strengthen with time. Lots of them really cheap now it would seem. IMO Well designed and extremely practical for day-to -day use, as well as being great to drive. If engine idle speed is very variable or it has difficulty starting when hot, try replacing the blue temp sensor at front of engine - dead easy to get at, and quite a common prob that may mystify some owners. This was the only niggle we really had with it.
-
Dont think VAGs prices were much different to ECPs, to be fair. They are only a 37p each or something, so dont drive miles to ECP if your VAG dealer is close!
-
I got them from ECP a couple of weeks ago.

godskitchen wrote An Irish trader?! Blimey! Somebody's gonna get well stung some day. :)

Someone on here sells them for £15 - I got one - plenty of others got one. I think it was zerocool. Use search - there's plenty about them.

I can confirm that my Storm badge was stuck on with adhesive which softens with application of heat from a hairdryer. Take off the old sticky stuff from Storm badge apply a strip of double sided adhesive tape made for the purpose (from Maplins or Halfords). With a pointy bladed craft knife, carefully cut the surplus tape from around the letters remove last piece of backing and carefully stick badge back in correct place. NB The Storm badge is now so hard to get (allegedly fetching over £100 on ebay) it is probably not wise to display the original badge if you use the car day to day - they can be removed easily by a tealeaf. I made a replica and stuck that on, keeping the original in the house (along with the grill VR6 badge.)
