  1. Thanks, guys. Alarm (real pain in the a$$!) was removed for me four years ago. Fans come on OK, so what's the 5 amp fuse for, anyone?
  2. Nosing around under the bonnet (you know how it is!). Looked at the 5 and 20 amp fuses in this component. The 5 amp one appears blown, yet all the electrics in the car are working. What is this item for, please?
  3. Funny, that about Auto Union, kev. I had heard years ago that the name Audi came from that. The "to listen" stuff was off google. Re corrosion. My wife's bought-from-new (£740 in 1966) Austin 1100 collapsed on the jack in 1969 due to a rotten sill.. You could stick your finger into a paint blister on top of the wing and break through the rotten metal into the (unlined) wheel arch on that car and many others of that age. I made my own wheel arch inserts on about 3 new cars in the 1970/80s after reading an advert for them being able to be imported from Sweden in Car Mechanics or similar. They were too expensive, though. Pre wheelarch-insert days, you could scoop many handfulls of salt laden mud from the wings and from in behind the headlights in most, if not all, cars. Clearly, they were designed to rot as quickly as possible. You could have your new car undersealed at the dealership, but it was an extra you paid for and most ordinary motorists did not realise it was good to have it done. We, the consumers are right mugs but pressure and competition can enforce better things from the manufacturers, unless they go under due to greed and complacency - like most of the British car and motor cycle industries.
  4. I have had 205 non-turbo diesel for 15 years. Was there really a turbodiesel version? - I should know this really.
  5. "......The company was founded by August Horch, but at that time there was already a car company operating under the name Horch, so he translated his name into Latin, to get the much nicer sounding Audi, meaning to listen....."
  6. Chubbz wrote: Nowt wrong with that El Chubbo. We older  ones tend to think more of function and durability than being flavour of the month appearance wise. That's for insecure wooses with low self-esteem! We proved we were cool guys years ago - been there and done it. 8) The car's a beauty.
  7. Eight hoses in kit, Goldie 197. Two are for air/fumes, though. Located at top and windscreen side of engine. (Use search - I had to put on photos on forum to ask guys where they went - even the VW "technician" did not know!) I chickened out of using one of those, though. as it dispensed with some sort of valve the original had. Cost was £247 in 2004, including VAT and delivery from Revolution in Gateshead who were OK to deal with. Samco themselves get 0 out of 10 for customer support, though. There is not one line of info in the box about the hoses or where or how to install them. I sent an e-mail to them and the reply made me decide I would rather staple my ears to a horse than buy anything off them again. I believe another manufacturer does them - ask or search on forum. Good luck, anyway. Iain
  8. My C is same type as yours and a 1995. I changed most of coolant hoses to Samcos about 3 years ago but all the original hoses looked good for several more years. The original hose clips are not good, though, and you could try changing some for the ones you can screw up tight (best go for stainless steel types, not cheapos). When I had similar small colant leaks from previous cars, these were always successfully fixed by giving the screw on the hose clips an extra tighten.
  9. I am 61 and everytime I swither about "should I use the glasses" for this or that job, I know the answer should always be "yes" and I tend to err on the side of safety first. I encourage you younger guys to do that, too. It's a cliche, but you only get issued with one set of eyes and they are priceless. There can be nothing worse than regretting for the remaining decades of your life that you were a tad lazy when doing a dumb, simple little job and it cost you dearly.
  10. I had trouble having them fitted to VR6. There are about 3 different types (end fittings) for that one. One of the helpful agents in England amused me by saying one of his contacts has been known to use the phrase "not another f###ing Corrado!"
  11. Certainly sounds like the classic "poor earthing" problem. Dont know enough to say where earth wires are. Look in engine compartment for copper wires/braids fastened to thick metal by bolts. (Engine off, please!) Any green copper corrosion is good pointer, too. Sorry cant be more specific. Good luck, Someone else will probably be able to give you more advice.
  12. Greetings from Ecosse, benworld. I have cousins in Bordeaux, Barsac and B-B-B-Bayonne. (Their Scottish father, my Uncle Alex, born Dundee.) In three 2-week holidays near Arcachon I never saw a Corrado! Good luck with your projects. 8) Vive la France :salute:

    Cleaning alloys

steve_16v wrote Nah - the engine cleaner stuff is available to all. I have used it for years, but not yet on alloys.

  17. Stan24v, I hate your friend, already.
  18. It's only water - but you try squashing it!
  19. Reasonable edition last night. "Emptying your own turds out" bit whilst enjoying your caravan holiday was really funny. However, Clarkson's sad, smartass humour at the expense of the "Jesus lookalike" shows how he has lost all perspective of what is acceptably funny to the majority. I am not religious and we all know that on pain of punishment by the laws of the land we have to be careful not to upset other denominations so why take the pi$$ out of Christians?
  20. Roundabouts - I've had two of my five shunts on them (others pranging me) and lots of near misses. They must be one of the riskiest places for getting your car bent. Hope you get your C fixed OK, dinkus. You must be a real charmer as far as poleesmen are concerned!

    Fallout

This is is a post that should follow JIM's wtf paintwork problem. Summer rain in this country can contain many substances as fallout. e.g, Saharan dust, pollen, insects, frogs, fish and even walnuts. Aggressive or toxic chemicals in solution are commonly found, too, though not as much as before the Clean Air Act of 1956 when many of us living in British industrial cities were breathing in droplets of sulphuric acid during foggy weather! Thousands of extra deaths occurred in the great London smogs of the early 50s, forcing the government to take action. In the spring of 1986 we had radioactive iodine and other harmful fallout from Chernobyl washed out with the rainfall, several days after the disaster. The experts had told us just after the explosion that the upper winds were such that the fallout would not reach the UK, by the way. The plume of dust came round in a circle and was washed out over Norway (I think) and the UK! Experts still get high measurements of radioactivity in the hillside vegetation of southwest Scotland, even now. Shockingly, in 2006, any lambs raised in one or two districts there, are still not allowed to be put on the market for consumption. We hear about this last topic from time to time in the Scottish news, but I suspect the powers that be would not like the bulk of the UK population to know exactly what is in our water and air. Using plenty of wax at least twice a year should help to protect your paintwork. VW (Mars?) Red was a doomed formula, though, I suspect. Pic shows deposit of rape seed pollen after thundery shower here a month ago.
  22. BTJ wrote Yep - that was always drummed into one forty years ago. Maybe it is not such a problem now with the fancy fuel filters cars have? Perhaps someone knows of this actually happening? Anyway, I certainly will not be risking it. Cleaning muck out of the fuel system is always going to be a hassle and expense most of us will not want to risk.
  23. Nowt wrong with your precautions, ardandy - maybe I'll be caught out when you won't. Cheers
