  1. I had mine done at a place recommended to me by my local garage owner who is a fussy rather meticulous person. I was not as impressed with absolutely everything, as it turns out, but ended up with a good job done for "repair and recoat alloys" to four Solitudes for £197, incl VAT. They are "Wheel Services" at 40 Main Street, Plains near Airdrie (pronounced Errdrie, as you may know!) Tel 01236 842554. Three warnings 1 - leave all four wheels to be done at once to keep down cost. Have someone with you in another car give you a lift home, or take your C's wheels to them in another vehicle. I went on my own, had to drive home on spacesaver and three wheels loaned by them (£eighteen). The loaned wheels were slightly too big and on bumpy stretches of road, scraped on wheel arch etc on way home and on return to Plains to pick up my own wheels. A bit of a sweat, both trips - never again. 2 - they only accept payment by cash or cheque. I had to drive into Airdrie and back to get cash. 3 - Oh, and don't make jokes about Plains and Airdrie being "injun country" and like the Wild West, etc. - I mentioned it once and did not get away with it! I had to back off and say, "never mind I originally come from Dundee" wherupon the atmosphere became more relaxed as they joked about teuchters and so on.
  2. Andi wrote I love the World Cup and have watched nearly every game I could since 1966 (shut up, ffs Motty!) even taking annual leave so I would not miss anything. I also am quite interested in cars. Why then, did I loathe the above nonsense? Never mind. Fifth Gear is on soon. Maybe it will be worth watching, guys.
  3. I think the style of programs like Top Gear today is all to do with the low esteem with which science is held today by the majority of viewers. The derogatory terms "geek" and "anorak" were even created in recent decades to classify anyone with a keen interest in technical matters. Decades ago, programs like Top Gear and Tomorrow's World were mostly done in a very serious style with presenters like Raymond Baxter an ex-squadron leader and Battle of Britain Spitfire pilot - an altogether exemplary British gentleman - but who fitted in entirely with Auntie Beeb's stuffy image. There were no laughs whatsoever as I recall. Spreading the then new Compact Disc with peanut butter before playing it stands out as the zaniest "wheeze" they risked. As we know, many viewers of today have an attention span of 15 seconds and are bored rigid by scientific/technical matters. Clarkson even puts over himself as an ignoramus (he's trying to con us, I'm sure) when it comes to technical matters lest we thing he is a geek. So, having a few laughs at outrageous comments and stunts has to be the way to get people not to switch channels, IMO. Not suggesting that is the case with forum members, many of whom are really clued up, serious minded technical people it would appear! As a person who grew up in an era when science was held in awe, I still, however, like the content of Top Gear most of the time, though last night's did not hold my attention as much as the previous edition. Playing football with new cars? what a boring and unashamed misuse of the material wealth we enjoy today. I know I'll now be told to "lighten up", of course, but it's all to do with when you were born and raised, really.
  4. Hello, again. Nice to see you have returned.
  5. Am into durable, quality upgrades like silicon coolant hoses and stainless steel braided brake hoses. Would buy such a filter with independent positive testimony. Would not buy based on info provided by company alone. You would have to be gullible to replace a vital component like an oil filter without good scientific reason, IMO.
  6. Look up website on google, it's easy, Neil. You fill in make of car and follow your nose.
  7. Better than having to clean a Lada, I expect.
  8. Blimey! Dr Forinor is smoking a half-chewed ceegar - not a great example to set to his patients. :nono:
  9. I do not think these judders are usually a serious safety problem - but they are flippin' annoying. Personally, I could not put up with it. If it were me, Neil, I would invest in a new pair of front discs and pads. I had to do it with the Polo, even though the ones in place were new Zimmermans from GSF. Another pair from GSF for a Golf GTi gave no problem.
  10. Now you know why "Trainspotting" was filmed in Edinburgh. (Only kidding Reekie VR - my eldest lad won't live anywhere else!)
  11. Possibly a build up of rust on the discs when the car was sat unused in wild and wooly Sheffield has triggered something. Sometimes the brake pads can almost seize onto the discs when cars are left unused in damp conditions for a few days.
  12. Warped discs seem relatively common. Also, if the hub face they are mated too when being replaced is not cleaned properly of rust, etc, they will not run true - so I was told when I had this trouble with a newish Polo years ago.
  13. Neil G60 wrote Sure, I appreciate that. Some guys will be patient and do a good job, but with others I believe you can still have probs. As my Storm had 10-year old original Solitudes I decided to go the whole hog. Might not have opted for that otherwise.
  14. mbaker8v wrote Good post mark. I did what you said - having owned cars for 37 years, I had no doubts this was the cause. (Disappointed that tyre seal was not infallible, though. You live and learn by experience.) "Soapy bubbles" proved that the tyre/wheel rim area seals were not sound. Guy at wheel refurb place said that too - it is extremely common. I even had to replace steel wheels on Pugit 205 after 12 years for same thing. Look no further, superscot.
  15. I can almost see where you live from near my house - will look out for you. (Shame about that team you must support, though!)
  16. I saw this and bought the mag. Was just about to mention it when I saw timg60 beat me to it.
  17. bigpants baby wrote I spent £50 on tyre sealant, put it in all the tyres and still had some leakage.
  18. I did my first VR6 oil and filter change about a fortnight ago. No probs and I am no gorilla of a mechanic. (Have experience of oil changes on other cars over period of 34 years, though.) Fill oil filter container two thirds with new oil before screwing it on. Any problems, email or pm me. I will be in most of day.
  19. I had this nuisance for a couple of years until I bit the bullet and paid for refurb for all four wheels - about £250 at a place recommended to me near Airdrie (Plains). No loss of pressure since. Even after weeks. The wheels were the original Solitudes on a June 1995 Storm. Best of luck - and welcome to the forum.
  20. "Blimey, young haywire reckons these are really squishy. I'd always thought it was kinda hard. Must be a generation thing."
  21. vr6storm wrote Dr Mat isn't old is he? :D
  22. vr6storm wrote ??? "Steady on." as Churchill said. Love 'em? I'm going off them after ten of their cars in our family. They are ranked 20th in latest "Auto Express" dealer poll (and that is up 5 places from last time.) My local VW dealer has switched to Honda (ranked 3rd) - think I might do the same for next car. Then we can all argue about whether the Rising Sun is a distasteful emblem or not. :D PS - Love the Corrado, but today's VW ain't interested in it or, say, the Mk 2 Golf GTi. They only want folks to come in, put £20k down on a new car, and keep bringimng it into them for servicing, filling the washer bottle, etc until they need a new one. Or am I being cynical?
  23. Dec wrote Well, so and so started it! :)
  24. mike-g60 wrote Surely you can say that you suspect the ?? mount could have been the cause of the problem but you will correct that if you find otherwise?
