My car has done 101k and is 11 years old. Belt looks OK. Anyone with a VR6 know of failures? If so what was mileage/age? Would appreciate any relevant info/experience, guys.

101k registered June 1995 no engine issues uses no oil original exhaust coil pack, door handle and headlight switch failure inevitable on all - about £300-400 in all.

Polo (we have had 5 in family) or Peugeot 205 diesel.

Big Thanks to Jenks who personally delivered coil pack to me this afternoon. Fitted this evening. Will keep original as spare. Though its plastic was cracked a couple of years ago, no arcing/misfiring was taking place unless water was sprayed onto it. I did then, however, paint it with epoxy resin (Araldite) as described on some forum a few years ago and found this 11-year old component was still serviceable. Poor design, though and extortionate price. 2 out of 10 for VAG.

One of best ways to test coil pack. Open bonnet with engine idling and spray a mist of water from house plant waterer or similar onto coil pack. If there are significant cracks in it you will get arcing - the engine will falter and you may be able to hear (or even see if it is not too bright) the sparks outside the coil pack on its case. Caution - remember safety rules when sticking your head under bonnet with engine idling!

Possibly a good idea to replace fuel filter if it has been on for an unknown length of time?

Star Performance are in Kirkcaldy, I believe. About an hour and a bit from Dundee. I would go to somebody like them, though, with this problem. They are very highly regarded.

Coilpacks get cracked with heat and age. If you spray a mist of water onto coilpack with engine idling you may get engine faltering which will confirm this is likely to be problem. Out of bright light you may see arcing to coincide with the engine stuttering.

storm-nut Love most things Yorkshire - I grew up in Leeds in the 1950s. Re Barnsley, pity about that pretentious fop Parkinson.

I got one from Screwfix - not too expensive either. On balance I think it has been worth getting. (Your arms don't half get sore without power tools when you are knocking on a bit.)

Off topic, I know, but misconceptions about rainfall by some of you guys in eastern half of England is interesting. Average rainfall for a year in the UK ranges from about just under 500mm (around Grays/Southend) to over 4000mm on some of our western hills. Average for whole of England is about 830mm. Many of the villages and small towns in the West Highlands of Scotland, Snowdonia and the Lake district get about 2000mm per year.
