Having a bit of a problem, I’ve done all the head work and put everything back together got the timing sorted and replaced all the bits on my 1.8 16V. I now have water leaking out the overflow bottle after 5-10 mins of idle running now I may have overfilled it at first to compensate for air locks etc but started it 3 times now on different occasions and each time it leaks? I checked the temp and it seems to happen as the water reaches 70-80 degrees its not boiling over just leaking out the overflow. A couple of things I think it could be - Cars been sitting for 6 months solid & oil was in the rad from previous leak may have caused obstruction, I did flush it 3-4 times however with rad flush before leaving it up. - Water pump may have same problem or may be shot - Some electric problem with pump or rad? - I replaced all water pipes with samcos so a blocked pipe is unlikely, although the solid metal water pipe may be clogged? - May still be air lock in the system? Any idea on other probable causes for this would be appreciated.

Had the same problem on an old set of H&Rs I got from Germany, Have to get the front pistons rebuilt going to set me back over £150 :( on the bright side didn't pay that much for them & the rebuild Im told will get them like new again. If you think about it £100 quid isn't bad when compared to buying a set of new H&Rs.

Anyone know the agv mileage in replacing these? I've know of a few that have snapped on corrado's (VST being the latest casualty) It tends to be on cars over 12-15yrs or +200k. Im half thinking of replacing my one now to be sure to be sure, since I've put a bit of work/money into the rebuild. Is it a case where these can at any stage or is age/mileage a big factor? once fitted do they need tightening down the line?

Yeah I've just done some head work recently and I had her turning over idle for a half hour at the weekend and it was sitting around 94-98. I was getting a little worried seeing 80-85 in some of the Hanes type manuals but I got suspicious as I dont recall any corrado running under 90. Water temp is fine now running a cool 60-70 with the new coolant.

Just wondering what the avg oil temp is on the 16Vs, I heard 90 was avg on the 2.0 16Vs anyone know what it should be on the 1.8 16V? I saw somewhere that it should be 80 degrees, I haven't seen my MFA show 80 in a long time??

Im liking that polo are there many of those around? was there a 1.6 8V GTi engine in those at any stage?

Good description of the FSI Nelson best I could do so far was a 1 pg speal bout stratified and homogeneos charge. U summed it up well ;) Was thinking of getting my FSi engine chipped but as its still under 10k will prob hold off and upgrade cars while pura petrol is still being sold in Ireland ! As for the turbo lag on the evo didn’t see the point in that exercise I mean CHANGE DOWN GEARS ! even in 3rd gear the lag wouldn’t be that bad going at 30mph. As for the lambo it did look messy around the track although im sure on a big circuit it would show the evo up. SLK ovr a boxa yeah right I think the fact that the merc has a heated scarf built into the seats tells its story! Would be interesting to see the new boxster S up against the 340 EVo 8 now that would be a good match up.

Cheers lads, Useful indeed. Ruler would the 2.0 wrench settings be the same as the 1.8? Couldn’t find the 1.8 pdf on that site.

Can anyone tell me the correct tension 16V head bolts go in at? Torque wrench figs if anyone has them.

Looking at some cheap boxster callipers on ebay.de anyone know where I could get some mounting brackets to fit them to the Corrado? I presume Id have to get them made up? Anyone done this before?

Its a 1989 1.8 16V - Sorry lads must have posted this in body mods by mistake I intended this thread to be in the problems section. Ill check my MFA this evening, this is working for sure but I didn’t check the avg miles just MPG. Its a mechanical mileage counter so ill have to check the cable..... where would I find it? As long as Im asking where would I find the rad fan switch?

Have been getting oily water in my 16V for some time now, at first I was being optimistic and replaced the oil cooler. After a complete rad flush the water is still a bit messy (not as bad) I have since bought the head gasket set from GSF as Im sure it’s the problem as the oil and water temp goes up quickly and oily water leaks from the flange at the front when its gets hot. Could I just ask how can I tell if I need to get the head skimmed + polished? I know its prob the best thing to do but is it always necessary? Ive also been considering other polishing/flushing on the head that can be done, has anyone had good results from this? I wouldn’t be too keen on a big bore just a tidy up. Can I also ask will I need the timing done when replacing the head gasket?

My speedo stopped working last week at first I thought it was a fuse but Ive checked them all and none of them appear to be out. Im concerned that the radiator cooling fan might be on the same circuit or using the same fuse because I haven’t noticed it coming on lately either. At what temp does this usually kick in? The water temp was over 100 at the weekend and I didn’t hear the fan coming on after I stopped the car. As I said Ive checked the fuses and none appear to be out.

Just been looking at the various conversions on Badger 5, what’s the best one suited for the 16V 1.8? Has anyone got his conversion? What kind of power increase is there? how does it sound? Any loss of low end torque? What kind of ££ and is it a big/tricky job fitting it?

Be very interested in this cheesy. 2 sets, please don’t give us false hopes on them though.
