-

-
Freaky!! I live in Roath - only other good car on my street is a silver r32. I have also seen a white C westbound on the m4 between j33 and 34

M reg - mystic blue (VR?) coming into Cardiff from the bay last night @ 6ish - i was in the J plate valver in front at the lights by the prison

. . . and then the car filled with steam . . .

Hey guys. As you know, mine blew a few months back (search for almost and ex-corrado owner by me - there are pics). The most important thing i learnt is that they don't blow with that ferocity on their own. If you are still driving the car with it bypassed then you might be lucky but keep a very close eye on the temp and how much pressure is building in the system (how hard are the coolant pipes?). Mine turned out to be the thermostat stuck closed which then caused the matrix to blow as the weak link of the chain (its a really flimsy component, lucky it wasn't the head gasket). so then whe i replaced the matrix, the engine was still over heating and putting immense pressure on the system. A quick test is to get the car up to running temp so the coolant pipes are hot and (carefully) put your hand on the pipe that connects to the bottom of the rad, if it's cold and/or the other pipes are rock solid, replace the thermostat or check for a blocked rad BEFORE you fart around replacing heater matrix, or you might be doing it again next week -
after my valver has driven a few miles at motorway speed - once i slow down to traffic lights etc, it starts making a wierd (and loud) hooting noise (from the front) and the steering judders a bit - i thought it was the brakes as it goes away if you press very lightly on the pedal, but there is also a squeek that is definately the brakes, leading me to believe that it might not be, any ideas?? Also, It pretty much ionly does it at a certain degree of turn of the steering wheel say between 1 and to 2 o'clock ish

Very kind of you mate. I'm in Cardiff though so if anyone else has around here, that would be great!

What about the 2.0 16v - does the addition of the cat and 0.2L even out or are there performance differences?
-
Thanks guys, the light started by coming on intermittantly when i got the car in July but then became more often and now is always on. I assumed it was the thin wire fusing back together now and then that was allowing the componant to work sometimes but now not so sure. How much is a look on VAG-COM at the dealers? The other problem is that i don't reckon it will go to within 0.6mm of the disc i physically couldn't push it any further toward the disc. Will give the Halfords code thingy a miss then I think
-
Hi guys, I was convinced that my driver side ABS sensor was the reason for the light being on as i'd checked the resistance over the connectors etc and it was sky high. Has anyone had problems with replacing this? I really struggled to get it all the way into position. The small magnet part is about 3mm short of touching the inside of the disc, Have i installed it correctly or should it be touching? The reason i ask is that the light is STILL on even though the resistance is down to the same as the passenger sensor  I saw some error code readers in halfords, are they any good?

Hi guys, I'm sure some of you can help me with this. I promise i have searched for ages. I'm looking for the thread that detailed all the stuff to do on a corrado when you first got it - i think it was Henny who wrote it and it was a really comprehensive list of all the componants to check and/or replace. It would really help, i need to start pre-empting faults on the C coz work thinks i'm a right hypocondriac, i've already had 3 "doctors appointments", 2 "dentist", 3 "eye checks" etc etc etc lol!

Almost an ex-Corrado owner!! [Whats that? All fixed? :o)]]

Hi Mate, Just to reiterate though, an earlier message said that the recall was in order to prevent boiling water/coolant from spraying in the cabin, did this happen? If not, the recall may have been carried out already and your matrix may have just failed due to another fault, mine turned out to be the thermostat  Just a thought :) -
Heater cable issues, modified: please read new end part

Hi mate, i know your pain, see "Almost an ex-Corrado owner" for some juicy pics of my dashless C. Is the dash back in now? are you getting the problem with all the knobs back on etc? sounds a bit silly, but you may have pushed the knob on too far. This can obstruct the sliders range of movement. If it's all still out, I found that it was a real effort to move the sliders, the little gears even skipped when the matrix housing was out but it was fine once everything was back in. -

Hurrah! It was the thermostat, car is running at a steady 80 odd degrees, sorted it all last night, it's a hell of a relief as it was :onfire: scorching last week, getting up to 120C in like 15mins. So I am well pleased with myself. New parts count is rising much faster than i thought it would though! Since July: 4 x Tyres (£360) 1 x heater matrix (8 hrs + £50 parts - VW wanted £507) 1 x radiator (£42 not too sure on the build quality though so might get a vw one) 1 x fan switch (£9) 1 x thermostat (£4) 5L Coolant (£cant remember) 4 x skinless knuckles 10000 x swearing fits Would i take it all back and buy a newer, more reliable motor with my graduate loan? Would i bug£erry!! I can't think of another car that looks so ageless and agressive - demonstrated by my new habit of looking back at it when i walk away :luvlove: . Planned for the new year: Bumber pack of jubilee clips - (i broke my pliers in the middle of replacing the rad - those clips are not fun when plierless  ) Proper clean and Engine bay detailing - (everything off and cleaned) Uprated (shiny) disks/hoses Any other tips on where to start the transformation? -
First off, that is awesome man, a guy on my road has just got a golf R32 so i've been demoted to second coolest car on the road. A Corrado R32 is untouchable in Kudos though, best VW engine in best VW car - woohoo I was thinking though, what do you reckon the handling will be like? Is the engine lighter/heavier - i assume it sort of sits between a four pot and the VR6 in weight terms. Congrats again mate

Wahey! I work in Llantrisant, what colour is your motor? 8) -
Henny, You are clearly the man on these things. I have the old hot pipes + cold bottom pipe but I also have excessive pressure in the system. Are the two linked in that bu££ered thermo causes excess pressure?? Or could the whole thing be caused by an airlock as when i replaced the heater matrix i filled the system from the top. water is hitting 120C and oil can go up to 130C on a 20 min run. please help! :)

sweet! 8)

Overheating 16v - not head gasket (UPDATE: All fixed!)
saysomestuff replied to golddust's topic in Engine Bay
There is some info on this on "Almost an ex-Corrado owner" by me - my thermo has packed up, blew the seal on the expansion tank so it just pi$$es steam, but any breakthroughs you make - i would love to hear them, I hate not being able to drive it like its meant to be driven! -
Hmm feel a bit of a muppet but i have finally found the source of my anguish. Whilst all pipes are extremely hot after 20 mins running - the pipe joining the bottom of the rad is stone cold - can anyone say thermostat  ? Am i right in thinking that it is stuck closed and not allowing water to complete its circuit? Biggest annoyance? GSF is shut! Well any advice on accessing/replacing this will be well received as i need to drive 100 miles or so to wiltshire on xmas eve and will not be best pleased if i'm stopping for half an hour every 20 - or worse - on the train!
-
Being wistful earlier i remembered the max power project from about 97. i think it was called project thunder - Reiger kit, orange flip paint, yellow form front, red from back, some "tasty" airbrushing :pukeleft: ( or should that be tasteless?) Anyone got any ideas what happened to it, I would love to see some pics of it.

The Hub, if you need some instructions - just email me, I got it done in about 6 hours total with a willing mate to make the tea and hold things and tools required are pretty minimal. There are a few strangely placed bolts you need to get out but the guide on CCA is pretty much spot on EXCEPT the size of the nut on the steering wheel - it's 27mm not 25mm  - but a quick trip to Halfords fixed that! -
If my memory serves me correctly, the mk2 Golf has the same expansion chamber - Anyone agree? BTW the fan on constantly made f@$k all difference  so the main problem seems to be the expansion chamber and/or blockage somewhere, will it never end i ask?
-
hmm, i nicked an o ring from maintenance and the car made it home last night - when i stopped it was at 120c, i had a look under the bonnet to see where the leak was and there was steam coming out of the expansion tank at the bottom. and the goddamn fan wasn't spinning - the mystery unfolds..... I guess the fan switch or thermostat has packed in, causing the system to get too hot, blow the heater matrix and several other bits and bobs. I'm going to bridge the connection so the fans on constantly and see what effect that has. There's no point replacing things if they'll just blow again! Then it looks like a new thermo and re flush the system on the weekend  Such is life :?
