ah so thats a "no steam should never escape from the cap" - nice one i will nip into GSF on the way home
-
This has actually got me thinking - it overheated after the AA man patched it which i attributed to the fact that the system had no heat exchanger so was smaller/under more pressure etc. When i pulled over steam was coming out of the expansion cap. i thought it was like a failsafe to save the gaskets but is this not the case? Should steam categorically NEVER escape fromthe expansion cap?

thanks 2CC - I'll get it up to temp and see if i can spot any steam. Lol just realised you're from Trowbridge, i'm from Westbury! (living in Cardiff at the mo) Any good 'rado mechanics round that way? BTW if i wasnt clear, the AA just bypassed the matrix to get me home last week, I replaced the matrix with a new one on the weekend (nice job :) )

I've just replaced the heater matrix and my '92 16v is still overheating! Its losing loads of water but i can't see a leak at all, apart from a tiny air leak in the gasket that connects the matrix pipes to the engine - there is no way this is enough to empty the header tank in 15 miles! extra info - When the matrix went last week, the AA man bypassed it and said the system was building up excessive pressure and overheating. Head gasket is fine as there are no combustion gases in the coolant system and vice versa. This is driving me mad  - Any suggestions?

Here are some pics from my weekend replacing the heater matrix. not much skin left on my knuckles but managed to get it done with no parts left over except a buggered exchanger! -

Who's was the L reg vr6 in Citygate VW - Colindale on Thursday afternoon? Looked very nice, i think 15" wheels but otherwise pretty standard OH and did anyone see me on the edgware road in a cloud of steam!? lol  -
Just thought I'd share this exciting tale :) On the way down to London yesterday i had a bit of a scare. After a smooth run on the motorway (3 passengers, 1 pregnant!) dropped into McDonalds for a little light refreshment. Pootling down the Edgware road I noticed the car was i little clammy, thought I'd whack the heater on as it wasn't clearing with the window open, i flicked the heat control all the way across to hot and turned it on full  Steam came billowing out of the vents like something in a movie! I couldn't see the steering wheel let alone where the hell i was going so i had to just abandon it in the middle of the road with my 3 (now deleriously screaming) passengers to the chorus of "Switch the engine off!!" "Get out get out get out!!!" etc. etc. provided a bit of entertainment in the least shall we say  Like a good boy I refrained from beating the old girl with the nearest branch (or scaff pole) and took a few deeps breaths, called the AA and started ringing around for prices on a heat exchanger. AA man said theres no way it'll get me back to Wales and bypassed it so i could get to Citygate VW further down the road - now i know why they are called stealers!. For starters they didn't offer me a cuppa (by now the wet feet were v.cold!) and proceeded to quote me £507!!!! for fitting! And they couldn't even look at it til Monday!! And the absolute icing on the cake? A pristine L plate VR6 just sitting there in the service dept car park making mine look a very sorry sight indeed  And finally I get to the point of the post. What if this happened twenty minutes before on the M4? We would have been toast (hence almost ex-C owner!), it was literally like someone threw a smoke grenade in the cabin. Has anyone got any mileage out of the recall/ design flaw issue mentioned here?. I'm gonna have to fix it this weekend anyways but i genuinely think its a very dangerous flaw in the car (aside form the lights and wipers!) and want to take it further if there is chance they can sort it for free - any thoughts?

Cardiff here, mystic blue 16v -
Hi, Just wondering what the final diagnosis was for this problem, I think i've got exactly the same but not the wierd slowing down bit. my '93 16 valver makes a bit of a grinding noise as i pull away but i would say that it was from the centre of the engine bay. Couple this with the good ol' intermittant ABS light and i think it is failing some kind of self-diagnostic check now and then. Any ideas what i need doing? Also, can i do it myself or can anyone recommend a good corrado mechanic in Cardiff area? Cheers

I'll give you £2 for it! :)

Hey guys - just bought my Corrado :D :D and although it came with FVWSH and all the other gubbins I seem to be short of 1 x Owners handbook. Net result? I have no idea what the MFA is telling me!! Can anyone point me in the direction of a full PDF handbook or at least explain the functions on the MFA? Your help would be very much appreciated Cheers
