Calling all sunroof experts...
-
hehe if only....
-
I've just replaced my sunroof mechanism for another (2nd hand one) and whilst the roof works perfectly without the panel (outer) on, when I bolt the panel on it will only tilt and slide back, not forwards, the motor just cuts out. I'm pretty familiar with these roofs, the roof is alligned perfectly, there are no broken parts but the whole mechaism seems stiff to me, especially the passenger side. Its got half a ton of white lithium grease in it but is simply too stiff for the motor to operate. I can wind it manually but don't really want to leave it like that. I've read all the guides/threads on here but can't really detrmine which parts I would need to replace to help free it all up a bit. Any ideas?

Harsh... :-( Scrots

aha Portsdown Hill! Looking good mate.

Local, small motor factor type places sell sets of 5 spline bits for about a fiver normally.

Yep, I'll 2nd that, springs definately, shocks almost certainly.

11 out of 10 for effort!

There's a huge amount to be said for standard VR6s, mines standard apart from a BMC CDA, someone took me out in a VR6 with RamAIR filter and 17s and it was soooo lame. Mine was older and generally a bit rougher but it would have dicked the other car on any road at any speed. Can't recommend the BMC highly enough, it looks, sounds and performs brilliantly.

1 rpm is 1 rpm regardless of how many cylinders you have, thats crankshaft speed. :-) No idea if they fit though!
-
Indeedy you didn't say 44mpg, that was my rough workings out! I'm genuinely curious about the differences you're seeing though. It would be useful if you do what Kev suggested measure it the old fashioned way. My Corrado is off the road for rear bush replacement and I've got a little 1.2 Clio runaround thats doing 48mpg comfortably, it was when I saw your figs I thought hang on thats not much worse than the Clio... I thought maybe there was a way to run a VR6 more economically!
-
Exactly what I was thinking Kev, what with the change to OBD2 the MFA could well be out. 44mpg is never realistic!
-
Jeez where on earth you getting petrol for £50 for a full tank Trig? That mpg sounds too good to be true tbh. Thats 44mpg...ish. I'd expect a 1.4l car to do that, not a 2.9l. :)

It won't do your idle any favours, as the break is after the MAF you are allowing unmetered air in.

Is VW the only place I can get one of these from?
-
Has she considered... ;-)

Each to their own and all that but I really do think they are THE ugliest car on the road. I can't think of any car that gets its looks so wrong. Every proportion verges on the hideous. I think its a car for people who appreciate nothing whatsoever about cars and are confusing it with a sportscar of yesteryear.

Yes, I've got some. I can't separate the backing from the mirror. The instructions just say peel off the backing and stick on. I have found this impossible and they have sat on the shelf since I got them. They look like they would work very well, but for me so far they were a total waste of money. :-(
-
I think the original ones are perfect shape but would be willing to try any other mirror in the chance that it might have better mirror lenses than the original ones. They are simply awful, I've never seen (or not seen) such huge blindspots.

Smoke could mean worn piston rings, it doesn't sound like it in your case. It could also mean worn valve stem seals, does the car smoke all the time or worse after standing, worse on the overrun etc? What colour is the smoke too....blue or white?

I wouldn't worry in the slightest personally. 13 bar may well be a typical average value for compression on a standard engine. That doesn't mean some engines aren't made to tighter tolerances and that higher values can't be encountered. I expect they all started at 14 and the rest have dropped a bit with time as is normal. You could argue that 3 out of four of yours are too high going on what Haynes say, no chance!

However you do it make sure you use a fuse, otherwise it might happen again.
