No it didn't smoke, never smokes as a rule. You're right it could have collected down there, the side of the head is as dry as a bone all the way round though so I'm not sure its that. It would be nice if it was though :-)

I don't think it's that, I so wish it was! There's no sign of leakage externally, unfortunately, plus the threads are in the head and it came out oily, its like oil has been forced under pressure up and arround the threads. After a compression test I found pots 5 and 6 were at half pressure too, I know the head is going to have to come off to fix that I'm just hoping I haven't got bottom end trouble. It still goes like a scalded cat!

Decided to change my plugs today, whilst in the hunt for the infamous eratic idle, upon removing the plugs, No.2 (Front left) had loads of oil on the threads, not on the electrode at all, in fact that looked pretty healthy. The others were ok, what is this likely to be?? I'm guessing its either come up from below, ie dodgy ring (oh er) or from above, more hopefully valve stem seals. What do you think chaps?

I fitted new discs, VW ones with mine, I was just thinking that your pads will take even longer to bed in if they are mating with a used disc.
-
Yep, cheers mate. Mine aren't there, think they must be older than those.

What's the best looking/most ugly car ever made?
andy replied to StormVR6's topic in General Car Chat
The new shape Beetle, hideous in my opinion, worse than ugly. The original was bad enough but the revamped one makes the old one look stunning. Love the more recent TVRs, breathtaking. -
The broken VR6 I bought as a project (broken tensioners etc) came with a set of 17inch Kosei? wheels on it, anyone know what model they are (5 spokes) and what they might be worth, I've got a set of 4, three are in ok condition with Yoko A539s with loads of meat, the other one has seen service and has a naff tyre on it! I want to sell them but could do with a ball-park figure for their worth. Cheers

Standard discs, 280s, for 80% of driving they're really good, I have to admit the really high speed stuff is not 100% what I'd hoped. I haven't got new discs or pads on the back yet and hoping that changing them combined with a fluid change/bleed will finish the job right off. Mine did take a fair while to bed in, have you fitted new discs?

I've got Pagid fast road pads on my vr and am very happy with them, they have a lot of bite.

Spot on dr_mat, its not the oil companies causing the problem its the government as I understand it.

So do you legally have to have one on a post 1992/3 car?
-
Sorry if this over complicates things but are you saying some of the INA ones have no markings...or that INA are ok from either source but other makes of tappets may have no markings and are best avoided?
-
I hear what your saying, but..... I've fitted a fair few before and not had this problem. Even when I've left my car a week without starting it would only make a slight clatter for a second or two at most, then settle. I would expect the oil pressure to be sufficient after a minute. A minute of tappety noise is an eternity when you've spent a few weeks putting it all back together! Still all's well now, runs like a peach! Now for that MOT....
-
All is ok it would seem, had only run the engine for less than 5 mins, just a few 1 or 2 min bursts at idle, didn't like to press on until I thought a bit more about it. Ran it up this morning and it was instantly quieter, brought her up to temperature then ran her at 2500 rpm for a couple of mins and its really settled down. I think it just needed thoroughly warming up and a bit of settling etc, just didn't expect any rattling tbh, thought the new tappets would take care of that. Oh well, a happy chappy now. Thanks for advice :-)
-
I'm sure Kevhaywire said that GSF tappets are the same as the VW ones. It really shouldn't be noisy with brand new ones, its not a load of clattering it just sounds like one or two....aagh.
-
Mines cost me £1100 quid in parts alone, I've done all the work myself (apart from the slight head skim). Have you been using yours since the work? Did you replace your tappets?
-
Hi, can anyone help? I've just got my spare VR6 project car back together, its had new clutch, all chain parts, new valves and tappets. I've started it tonight and it leapt into life beautifully but.... I have a tappety noise. I replaced the tappets to try and eliminate any future noise so am a bit annoyed. Anyone got any experience of this? I know it could be a dodgy new tappet, but I find that unlikely. Also wondering if there is any "procedure" for running in new tappets.....

What's the legal position with de-cats, could you get a b*llocking if pulled over and they find you haven't got a cat?
-
The difference you've noticed Kev, is that with your S/C on, or are you still N/A?
-
I could well be interested if the price is right.
-
Don't bother getting a Ramair if you think it might be quieter than a K & N, Ramairs are evil loud!

Does the Passat one fit straight in?
-
No don't buy mine!..... :-) Is the whole mechanism the same on the passat/toledo?
