  1. Can safely say I've never seen that one about in east devon since I moved here a few years back, I'll keep an eye out though

    Insurance farce

Ahh, since I don't look out for VR parts I'd assumed they made them aswell. Strange that they don't though, always thought there were more VR's out there than valvers so they must be missing out on a fair chunk of the market

    Insurance farce

dr_mat, are you on about genuine VW exhausts? Because pretty much any tyre or exhaust fitters can get hold of pattern (Bosal) corrado exhausts that aren't classed as modified parts to insurers. The quality is supposedly not that great so they're probably a false economy but they're certainly not difficult to get hold of and are a lot cheaper than genuine parts. If you were at fault they wouldn't give you anything for your car (assuming it's fully comp), but would still pay out to the third party.
  4. One of the mags did a rolling road test with quite a few different brands and octane rated fuels, can't remember the exact details but the likes of Optimax and Ultimate were consistently giving a few extra bhp over 95RON. Obviously that test was performed under full load so didn't show if there were any benefits in normal conditions, but I can tell the difference when overtaking so will keep using v-power in mine. The branded fuels also have higher quality detergents in them than supermarket stuff so are better for your engine. You also get quite a few extra mpg when using higher octane fuels, the last time I went up to Lancashire I was getting over 40mpg on the MFA, on lower octane it averages about 35. That makes quite a difference on a 600 mile round trip.
  5. Not saying never but certainly don't have any intentions of ever selling it, there's nothing else I want for even remotely similar money, and even if I do get something else later on I'll still keep the rado as a toy.
  6. Cheers davidwort, I'll pick some up tomorrow then. The only thing I was worried about with the VR6 kit is whether or not the connections at the front were different.
  7. So should I get the "Mk3 Golf/Cor.VR6 (pre95) Goodridge Braided Hoses" kit then? (If it makes any difference my chassis number ends 50ZPK009155)
  8. Does anyone know if there's any reason the brake hose kit listed as "Corrado 90-92 Goodridge Braided Hoses" wouldn't fit a 1993 16v? I went into Goodridge HQ today and asked, but they didn't know  and recommended finding out myself. The bloke at Awesome wasn't sure, so I asked the VW parts guy who said the part numbers were the same (although the 1991 has a different part no.) which means in theory the above kit should fit? Seems funny that it's specifically listed as 1990-1992 so I thought it best to check on here before buying them. Oh and it actually works out slightly more expensive to buy from Goodridge direct than it would to get them sent down from Awesome-GTI !!!
  9. Today I spent quite a few hundred £'s on new ferodo brake pads, new front/rear engine and gearbox mounts, Neuspeed rear ARB, VAG rear beam bushes, and will be popping into Goodridge tomorrow to see about getting some braided hoses. Once that's all arrived should be having it all fitted later in the week. Since the mounts and rear bushes are on their last legs I reckon I should notice a bit of difference!!! 8) inky, good work fitting that on your own! I wouldn't even trust myself to change the oil
  10. Yes a properly ripped does sound exactly the same as a cd to my non-audiophile ears, also, I've not got top of the line audio equipment to listen out for the minor differences. I know from reading audio forums that OGG has more potential, but when I can't tell the difference between mp3 and wav format then there's no point changing. Not true, CBR is effectively still VBR with an upper bitrate cap and padding whenever the bitrate falls below the requested bitrate. Only worthwile if your hardware can't play VBRs. There are noticable differences in quality of mp3s depending on the version of LAME used and the settings, 3.90.3 (--alt-preset standard) and 3.97b2 (-V 2 --vbr-new) are the recommended versions and settings. If you can tell the difference between these and a cd whilst driving along you must have exceptional hearing or a poor mp3 player. Interesting quote from Ubernet. Not saying you're both imagining the differences, but that for just about everyone else on here mp3s are fine.
  11. To be fair I think anyone not into cars see them as old VWs, the same applies with any classic, when I was a kid there was a guy near me with a lotus cortina, to my mates not into cars it was just an old ford
  12. A properly encoded mp3 is indistinguishable from a wav file for 99.9% of all people. All my ripped mp3s are encoded to the UberStandard specification and sound exactly like the cds they were ripped from (pc is hooked up to a good stereo). For me ogg vorbis whilst extremely good, doesn't have enough benefits over proper mp3s to justify replacing thousands of tunes, and then not having as much compatability with hardware playback. If anyone wants to know how to create the absolute best quality mp3s possible look at this site http://www.chrismyden.com/bestmp3guide.php
  13. ...still get's my vote as the best bit of F1 driving i have ever witnessed!! I was at that race, probably would have been better staying at home tbh, got very wet, could only see a few corners at any one time and it was pretty tricky to keep up with the positions, didn't even catch the highlights it took so long to get home :( That and Silverstone 92 put me off going to see F1 live, World Superbikes were much more interesting days out :)
  14. Totally disagree with that and these what if things are pointless! Senna - amazing driver but was nearing the end of his career before Imola 94 when he died with Michael already ahead in the championship. I believe Michael surpassed Ayrton's ability and was more of a complete driver. People glorify Senna as he's dead. When he was alive he was more villified than Schuey. It was the third race of the season when he died, Senna had to retire from the first two races with technical problems so a lot of drivers were in front in the championship. No way has Schumacher surpassed Senna's ability, many people agree that wet weather is the great leveller and no-one could ever match Senna in the wet. Have a look at this website which has a clip of and describes donnington 1993, regarded by many as the best opening lap of any f1 race. In that race he also lapped virtually everyone else that day in a car that was inferior to the williams and bennetton. Also, for most of his career Schumacher has never really had any other great drivers to compete against, throughout his career Senna was up against true greats like Mansell and Prost, often in inferior cars. Don't get me wrong I think Schumacher is one of the true greats, but people like Ecclestone and Stirling Moss regard Ayrton as the best driver ever for a reason.
  15. Personally I wouldn't buy a sorn'd car unless it was something I was really, really interested in. Like Dec says you can't drive it away, nor can you (legally) take it for a test drive. Same goes with tax, except the buyer would have to wait even longer to legally drive it because they'll have to get the insurance docs through and mot before taxing it. There are plenty of mk3 GTIs out there with t&t so you don't want to be limiting your market.
  16. Terrible news mate :( Know exactly how you feel, Shimba, our 8 year old german shepherd had to be put down on tuesday after spending all but two weeks of the last three months in the vets. Gutted.

  18. Agreed, although personally I'd say avoid standard sized drilled discs entirely, Porsche brakes are cast with holes in so unlike aftermarket applications aren't weakened by them. Unless they've been cast like that they are far more trouble than they're worth and the only reason good companies do them is people like them for aesthetics, a better pad compound and replacing the brake fluid regularly is far more effective than drilling holes.
  19. Chances are black diamond discs are just VAG discs that have been treated to turn them black then drilled/grooved. The vast majority of aftermarket brake discs are actually sourced from the OEM manufacturer, drilled and/or grooved then rebranded. The cheaper ones are normally based on pattern parts. It's only the discs used in the big-brake conversions that are actually manufactured by the aftermarket companies. Some companies (e.g. tar-ox) put more effort in and have them heat treated for extra strength and hand finished, this is generally reflected in the price but as with most things in life you get what you pay for.
  20. Looking good in all of them 8) but the first one is my favourite aswell accelerator pedal rubber?
  21. Read either of the links mate, it's definately an urban myth http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/cruise.asp http://www.breakthechain.org/exclusives/lawsuits.html
  22. Good skills taking out a paxo! One oap down here managed to 'ramraid' the threshers on the high street whilst attemting a simple manouvre, and another has one of those mobility scooters and has knocked other pensioners over with it then driven off completely oblivious! They're a menace I tell you!
  23. In all honesty I've seen a lot more bad male drivers than female drivers in the 9 years I've been driving. Not in terms of parking and manouvering but in general arrogance, ignorance and being downright dangerous to other road users. Saying that though, the most spectacular crash I've seen was a women though, approaching a blind left hander I was greeted by a zafira fishtailing across the road, she lost control, swerved onto the bank making the car leap into the air and do a barrel roll over the hedge and into the adjoining field, which was about four foot lower than the road level. Spectacular to see, like a stunt out of the dukes of hazzard! Luckily she crawled out (ended up on its roof) unharmed if somewhat shaken. I was a bit shaken as well to be honest, I was doing about 50 and if I'd been a few seconds further on it would have hit me head on, which would have hurt! Anyway, the worst ones though are the pensioners well into their 70s and 80s that still drive, unfortunately there are a lot of them where I live so you've gotta be careful on the roads.
  24. Seems to me that most young people think any car that's number plate isn't the new style (two letters, two numbers, three letters) is really old and therefore crap. That is until they try and race you, then a quick blast on the throttle soon shows them who drives the crap car.
