all 4 of the KR 16V engined cars I've had have had this idler setup, and every KR 16V 'rado/golf/passat I've ever worked on has had the same... :?
-
It's so VW could run the P/S at a different drive speed from the alternator/waterpump without the belt fouling the waterpump. :? AFAIK all KR 16Vs had this set up if they had P/S... 8)
-
Stickied as requested... 8)
-
Nope, the bit that's free to turn is on the belt that goes to the P/S... :? The alternator belt does a crank -> waterpump -> alternator route which spins the waterpump at all times. 8) The PAS belt does a crank -> idler -> PAS pump route...
-
I reckon that you could be on about the idler pulley for the power-steering... :? This is the double pulley on the waterpump shaft. The inner pulley drives the waterpump, the outer one is a free running pulley with a brass/fibre bush inside it to act as a bearing... These bushes break down pretty easily and create an almighty screeching noise when they go... :? VAG has recently lowered  the price of this pulley to around the £40 mark (was over £80 about 4 years ago!) There's another thread about it HERE but no part number... sorry... 8)

they've got 2 too many cylinders for my car... ;) I've got about 3 engines kicking aroung in various numbers of parts, so I could probably do the 33years thing too! 8)
-
Woah... The guys laugh makes that video... 8) Bet that embarasses some cars on the road! ;)
-
If the fluid is all over the top of the box, check the pipe that feeds the slave cylinder.. these sometimes fracture on the coiled bit or the rubber perishes and bursts or wears through... If this pipe looks OK, then it's time to change the slave cylinder... :| Good luck! 8)

I'll be able to confirm or deny that soon as I've bought a set of clocks from Crazymarcel (which should be landing on my matt sometime very soon) to test exactly that! ;) 8) The white needles fitted to earlier cars DON'T glow as standard (as you can see in the first pic above) but there's plenty of paints out there that do glow which are nice and cheap... 8)
-
Seriously? It looks like a regular cambelt and they last a fair old while! 's what I was warned when I bought the kit... :)
-
only if you over tension the belt... :) Drawbacks are belt life is nowhere near what the original non-toothed belt's life is... but belts are cheap, so what the hell! ;) I suppose that the extra noise could also be taken as a drawback.... but I kinda like it, so again, what the hell! ;) :D
-
the guy I got my Autometer dials from has just built a 400BHP N/A 1970s beetle... it looks a shed from the outside, but the engine is a work of art... 8) 1/4 in 10.5! he's running in on a mix of petrol, meths and paint-thinners! It's also road legal! :? Utter madness... :D
-
yeah, on K-jet the air plate can be forced down as well when on over-run which just allows a trickle of fuel into the cylinders so that it doesn't just stall... Mega efficient for a mechanical system... 8)
-
I got... 8) well, very very similar anyway.... just a different manufacturer...
-
which bit? a corrado doing 20K/year, the fuel bill, or the repair costs! ;) The whole fuel tax thing annoys the hell outta me too... I can't afford to live in Manchester so I commute in... for that I get taxed to high heaven on petrol, road tax, VAT on parts and insurance and now they're on about putting in Toll roads and traffic charges... How the hell are people supposed to work in cities any more?!? It's getting to the point where I can take a 10K pay cut to work just around the corner, and actually come home with more cash at the end of the month! :?
-
yup, but it's then pretty easy to blag the guys down to a better price by phoning a couple of times, noting down the names of the people you talk to and the prices they quote and then "quoting" a slightly better price at them and seeing if they'll honour it... ;) Of course, I'd never condone this kind of thing... I just use my mate's trade account! :-P
-
I do around 20K per year.... If I did that all in my 'rado at an average of around 27mpg, I'll spend just over £3K on petrol per year... :|
-
If I had to put new wheels on my 'rado, I'd get another set of the 7.5x16 Borbet C's that she currently wears 'cos I've always liked 'em... 8) If I couldn't get hold of them, I'd probably go with OZ Chronos, Speedline Comp2 or a nice set of BBS split rims... 8) again, all in 7.5x16 as I think that that's the size that suits a 'rado best for looks and handling... 8) Oh, and have a look at http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk for alloys, they're not the cheapest, but they do some good deals with tyres sometimes... 8) Or try your luck on Ebay.de ;)
-
mine's on it's first block rebuild... 8) I reckon that I can get another 11 years out of this engine @20K per year before I gotta buy another! ;)
-
nope, not standard... :? dunno what its for then... possibly to turn on a flashing LED somewhere? *edit* - Oops, where are my manners??? Welcome to the forum! 8)
-
Kev? Kev? Kev? Time to wake up... You've overslept!!!   :-P
-
If it's just a pondering thought then, Cool... 8) I reckon that PhatVR6's will be well up there when he gets around to dumping the 2 litre and putting the bits he's got lying around to use! ;) 8) I'm not sure what top speed the VR6twinTurbo got 'cos it went off the end of the speedo!
-
twin turbo VR6 is the fastest straight line speed 'rado I've seen on video... 8) On here it's gotta be one of the Supercharged+VR6+NOS boys, or possibly one of the mega tuned 20Vturbos that holds the fastest in a straight line record... Fastest in what way though? 0-60, top speed, around a track, 30-100, 60-0??? IMHO, speed's irrelevant without the chassis to control it, and the brakes to stop it! 8)
